Nastergal Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new ep?

We are halfway through recording a full length album that is definitely going to be way more progressive, brutal and faster than our EP.

2.So far you have released one ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

We wanted dark and somber melodies, basically creating interesting themes. We did not go for a specific style, only what sounded good to the ear. It may include a combination of a few different styles.

3.A lot of your lyrics are inspired by the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in his writings?

Nietzsche has always been a great inspiration when it comes to interpreting the world around us. It defines how we explore religion, individualism and collectivism. The Solitude EP is based of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. The upcoming album continues with this theme.

4.I know that the band name is Afrikaans for deadly nightshade, how does this name fit in with the musical style that you play?

It sounds aggressive and dark. The name has a good ring to it when pronounced in Afrikaans.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new ep cover?

A dark ominous castle standing in a storm of solitude. It fits in with the EP's main theme which is about the solitude of man as he looks within, in search of himself.

6.All of the band members are from different parts of the world, what impact does this have on the musical style that you play?

It's great in a sense that every member has their own influence and interpretation in how they express themselves within the songs.

7.Recently 'WormHoleDeath Records' re-issued your 2021 ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the newer version?

The EP is no different. We released it ourselves before we signed with Wormholedeath. The main difference now is that it is backed by a great company with worldwide exposure.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

The reaction has been great. We've only had positive feedback.

9.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Marco and Evgen are session musicians so they are always busy with one project or another. Jacques is busy with his performance assessment in classical guitar and working on an instrumental metal project. Riaan is working with a friend on a post black metal project. Nastergal of course is always our first priority.

10.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We are looking at completing the album before the end of this year. Definitely keep writing epic and dark songs with the same brutal riffs and crazy  harmonies. Keep producing songs with good quality technical work but also keeping the music interesting and memorable.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

Lute Suites of Bach, Judas Priest, Paul Wardingham, Dark Funeral, King Diamond, Dimmu Borgir. There are so many good bands out there.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We think as musicians we should be open minded when composing songs. Listen and study a broad spectrum of music that is challenging. Stick with what works and sounds good to you.
