Mortal Thrall are a duo from the United States that plays a Baroque influenced and progressive form of post black metal and this is a review of their 2022 album "A Path To Fire" which will be released on May 20th by Trepanation Recordings.
Classical guitars start off the album while also adding in some Baroque touches to music which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard.
When tremolo picking is utilized they also give the songs more of a raw feeling while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams. Elements of post metal can also be heard quite a bit throughout the recording along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style. When synths are utilized they also give the songs more of an atmospheric feeling as well as some of the tracks also being long and epic in length and the music also has its progressive moments. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are a concept album based upon the last days of the Spanish Inquisition and the story of one of its final victims Maria de los Dolores Lopez.
In my opinion Mortal Thrall are a very great sounding Baroque influenced and progressive post black metal duo and if you are a f an of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "A Path To Fire" "Passion Made A Weapon" and "Flames Filled The Sky". 8 out of 10.
