Sleep Paralysis are a solo project from Arizona that plays a very dissonant, avant garde and experimental form of black metal and this is a review of his self released and self titled 2025 album which will be released in February by I, Voidhanger Records.
Classical music style piano's start off the album before going into more of a heavier, technical and dissonant direction. When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be heard while the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams and the recording also gets very avant gatde sounding at times.
All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them while the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. Synths are also mixed in with the heavier sections of the music along with some elements of chiptune and vaporwave, spoken words and death metal growls can also be heard on a few tracks.
Influences of jazz music are also utilized quite a bit throughout the album along with all of the drum beats also being programmed. When tremolo picking is added into the faster riffing they also give the songs more of a raw feeling as well as the solos and leads also remain true to more of a technical and dissonant direction and a couple of the tracks are also very long and epic in length. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dreams, nightmares and the human psyche.
In my opinion Sleep Paralysis are a very great sounding dissonant, experimental and avant garde black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Fever Dream" "Helplessness" and "Nostalgia". 8 out of 10.
