Satyricon/The Shadowthrone/Napalm Records/2021 CD Re-issue Review

This  is  a  review  of  an  album  from  Norway's  Satyricon  that  was  released  in 1994  called  "The  Shadowthone"  which  displays  an  earlier  style  of  black  metal  and  was  re-issued  in  2021  by  Napalm  Records.

Grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  riffing  a  few  seconds  later.  Keyboards  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  while  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

The  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  Clean  pagan  vocals  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  a  couple  of  tracks  also  introducing  acoustic  guitars  and  spoken  word  parts   onto  the  recording  as  well  as  some  nature  oriented  sounds  also  being  utilized  briefly  and  when  guitar  leads  are finally  added  into  the  music  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style,  as  the  album  progresses  a  small  amount  of  stringed  instruments  can  also  be  heard  and  they  also  add  in  touches  of  folk  music.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Mysticism,  Nature  and  Apocalyptic  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  was  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Satyricon  and  if  you  never  have  heard  the  earlier  material,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hvite  Krists  dod"  "Vikingland"  and  "The  king  of  The  Shadowthrone".  8/8  out  of  10.

Satyricon/Rebel Extravaganza/Napalm Records/2019 CD Re-Issue Review

This  is  a  review  of  an  older  album  from  Satyricon  which  showed  the  music  going  into  more  of  an  experimental  black  metal  direction  and  the  album  was  released  in  1999  and  called  "Rebel  Extravaganza"  with  the  re-issue  being  released  in  2019  by  Napalm  Records.

Air  raid  sirens  start  off  the  album  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can   be heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Touches  of  the  black'n'roll  style  the  band  got  known  for  where  also  introduced  on  this  recording  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  sounding  as  well  as  a  couple  of  the  tracks  being  brief  instrumentals  one  of  which  also  introduces  clean  playing  onto  the  recording  and  some  songs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  keyboards  and  the  clsong  track  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  female  vocals.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics cover  dark  and  violent  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  from  Satyricon  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Tied  In  Bronze  Chains" "Prime  Evil  Renaissance"  and  "The  Scorn  Torent".  8  out  of  10.

Satyricon/Deep Calleth Upon Deep/Napalm Records/2017 CD Review

Norway's  Satyricon  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  continues  the  black'n'roll  style  that  was  established  and  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Deep  Calleth  Upon  The  Deep"  which  was  released  by  Napalm  Records.

A  very  fast  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later  while  a  great  amount  of  melody  can  be  heard  in  the  riffing  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  music  has  a  very  Nordic  inspired  atmosphere.

Atmospheric synths  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  briefly  while  spoken  word  parts  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  distorted  and  melodic  fashion  and  the  music  also  incorporates  a  great  amount  of  black'n'roll  elements.

Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  a  couple  of  tracks  also  brings  in  a  small  amount  of  melodic  chants  and  as  the  problem  progresses  a  brief  use  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  as  well  as  a  small  amount  of  saxophones  which  are  added  onto  one  of  the later  songs  and  most  of  the  songs  focus  more  on  a  mid  tempo  style  as  well  as  having  its  fast  moments.

Satyricon  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  black'n'roll  style  that  has  been  established  on  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyric s cover  darkness  and  nature  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Satyricon  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  their  more  recent  style,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Midnight  Serpent"  "Deep  Calleth  Upon  The  Deep"  "Dissonant"  and  "Burial  Rite".  8  out  of  10.

Satyricon/Dark Medieval Times/Moonfog Records/1994 CD Review

Satyricon are a band from Norway that has a long history and is one of the most well known bands of that genre that played a very epic, atmospheric, forest style of black metal with this recording and this is a review of their classic 1994 album "Dark Medieval Times" which was released by Moonfog Records.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with a good amount of blast beats being thrown in at times, while the keyboards bring a very dark, atmospheric and epic feeling to the music mixed in with a brief use of pagan sounding flutes, as for the bass playing it has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast black metal riffs that are very dark, raw and primitive sounding with some dark sounding melodies being utilized at times and there are little to no guitar solos or leads present on this recording, as for the classical guitars they use finger picking and full chords to add another dimension of darkness to the music.

Vocals are a mixture of grim sounding and high pitched black metal screams with a brief use of whispered vocals and spoken word passages, while the lyrics cover dark, medieval and forest themes with the song writing being in a mixture of Norwegian and English, as for the production it has a very dark, raw and primitive sound to it.

In my opinion this was one of the greatest albums from Satyricon and if you are a fan of this band, you probably already own this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Walk The Path Of Sorrow" "Dark Medieval Times" and "The Dark Castle In The Deep Forest". RECOMMENDED BUY.
