Obscura Amentia/The Art Of The Human Decadence/Sliptrick Records/2017 CD Review

Italy's  Obscura  Amentia  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  sees  the  music  going  into  more  of  an  atmospheric  black  and  doom  metal  mixture  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "The  Art  Of  The Human  Decadence"  which  was  released  by  Sliptrick  Records.

Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  atmospheric  direction  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

Most  of  the  slower  riffing  is  very  heavily  influenced  by  the  more  melodic  side  of  doom  metal  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  there is  also  a  brief  instrumental  track  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction  and  the  songs  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  paced  style.

On  this  recording  Obscura  Amentia  take  the  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  mixes  it  with  doom  to  take  their  music  into  a  different  direction,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Obscura  Amentia  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric black  metal  mixed  with  doom,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ocean"  "Agony"  and  "King".  8  out  of  10

Obscura Amentia/Ritual/2012 CD Review

Obscura  Amentia  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical  style  that  I  would  describe  as  being  atmospheric  occult  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2012  album "Ritual".

Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the  music  at  times,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars,  as  for  the  keyboards  they  are  only  utilized  on  the  last  song  which  is  an  instrumental  and  they  bring  a  very  dark  and  depressive  sound to  the  music.

Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  atmospheric  black  metal  riffs  that  capture  the  atmosphere  perfectly  without  relying  on  keyboards  and  synths  with  a  great  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  being  thrown  into  the  riffing  as  well  as  retaining  some  raw  and  primitive  elements,  while  the  lead  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  are  very  melodic  and  primitive  sounding  black  metal  guitar  leads  and  solos  that  have  a  traditional  metal  feeling  to  them  at  times.

Vocals  are  all  high  pitched  and  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  occult  themes,  as  for  the  production it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  heavy  sound  without  sounding  over  or  under  produced  in  addition  there  is  a  good  mixture  of  short  and  long  songs  presented  on  this  recording.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  recording  from  Obscura  Amentia  which  utilizes  more  melody  and  guitar  work  than  the  previous  one  that  came  out  a  couple  of  years  back  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Citedal  Of  Beleth"  "Ritual"  and  "Descend  Into  Chaos".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Obscura Amentia Interview

1) Can you tell us a little bit about the band, since you are a new bands, and introduce yourself?

First we would like to thanks you for the space granted us, the band was formed in november of 2009 with the meeting between hel a female screamer that loves the extreme black metal in every his form and black charm a multi-instrumentalist that play guitar, keyboards and bass. In a february 2010 the band starts to create the 1st song auto-produced "Eurosia" and in July 2010 the album "The Darkest Dream" is complete.

2)What is the music sound that you try to achieve with your music?

The intent is to create a raw, venomous and claustrophobic sound,a malevolent atmosphere that enters in the mind of listener until the moment he will be a slave to it.

3) What are some the lyrical subjects and topics that you portray in your music?

Our lyrical usually are inspired by all that is obscure in the history of humanity, old books, occultism, death, moved into a hypothetical era but also our italian legends.

4) What is the meaning and inspiration behind the band's name?

Obscura Amentia that is “dark madness” born after a reflection: everyone on earth have a dark seed inside, an instinct that is called by various names, Sigmund Freud called it Thanatos, this is the drive to destroy and kill, the foundation of what many call madness, but in reality is not that one of the basic human instincts.

Obscura Amentia is this seed.

5) Have you had any oppurtinities to do any live shows yet, if so what are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

Until we don’t feel the need to do concerts, now we are exclusively focused on writing the album, maybe a day we’ll change this idea, but we promise you that we’ll compensate this lack with a high production in terms of quality and quantity.

6) Are there any side projects besides this band, or is Obscura Amentia a full time band?

Obscura Amentia is a full time project where we put into passion and all our dark devotion.

7) Currently you are unsigned, what kind of label do you feel would be the right label for this band?

Actually we’re still searching a label to spread our work, we have had some offers, but because of some problems we had reject these ones. The right label for our band must be focused to spread our music, make it known to the world, without thinking at live shows because equally if we did the concerts would be rare in relation to musical productions.

8) How has your music been received so far by black metal fans worldwide?

So far, whereas we are not well known, we suppose that we have had a good appreciation, we hope that this continues also for the future works.

9) What direction do you see the music heading into on future releases?

We think that we'll continue on this way, naturally trying to improve us.

We are already composing the new songs, in November 2010 begin the recording of the next album.

10) What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music, do you have any influences outside of black metal, and also what are you listening to nowadays?

We are somehow inspired by the swedish black metal bands, and also by the dark athmospheres of bands as Limbonic Art, and Satanic Warmaster, ultimately we are listening the last album of Watain (that has a very good sounds!), Ekpyrosis of Setherial and albums old styles as Blood Fire Death of Bathory.

11) Does Satanism or Occultism play any role in your music or lifestyle?

In the Italy, legends, story and traditions are full of occultism, then certainly they affect our music and life, in fact as mentioned above, these are some of the basic themes of our songs, sometimes the reference is direct, sometimes presented in the form of metaphor.

12) Outside of music, what are some of your interests?

Sure, these include Medieval history, Medieval re-enactment, books, softair, cinematography.

13) Any final words or thoughts before we close this interview?

Thanks again for the space granted us, thanks to all the people that support us and that sustain us. Keep the black flame alive.

Obscura Amentia/The Darkest Dream/2010 CD Review

Obscura Amentia are a band from Italy that plays a very dark and atmospheric form of raw black metal and this is a review of their self released 2010 album "The Darkest Dream".

Drum programming is mostly slow, mid paced to fast with a lot of blast beats, while the keyboards sound very atmospheric, as for the bass playing it is mixed down low in the mix and has a raw and primal edge to it.

Rhythm guitars are mostly slow, mid paced to fast raw black metal riffs with a good amount of sorrowful melodies, while the lead guitars are very distorted primal black metal guitar solos that use a small amount of wicked melodies.

Vocals are all high pitched black metal screams, while the lyrics cover darkness in more of a supernatural way, as for the production it is very dark and raw sounding.

In my opinion Obscura Amentia are a very good dark sounding atmospheric black metal bands that fans of this genre will enjoy. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Afterlife Recall" "The Darkest Dream" and "Groans Of Ghosts". RECOMMENDED BUY.
