Obsequiae/The Palms Of Sorrowed Kings/20 Buck Spin/2019 Full Length Review

Minnesota's  Obsequiae  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  their  melodic  mixture  of  black  and  dark  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "The  Palms  Of  Sorrowed  Kings"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  20  Buck  Spin.

Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  harps  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  medieval  feeling.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  there  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  songs  also  mix  atmospheric  sounding  synths  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music.

Vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  spoken  word  parts  and  growls  are  also  utilized  at  times.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up a   decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  elements  of  dark  and  doom  metal  as  well  as  some  harp's also  making  a  return  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  the  album  progresses,  a  couple  of  the songs  are  also  instrumentals  and  later  tracks  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  vocals.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  mysticism,  nature,  occultism  and  mythology  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Obsequiae  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  melodic  dark  and  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ceres  In  Emerald  Streams"  "Morrigan"  and  "Emanations  Before  The  Pythia".  8  out  of  10.

Obsequiae/Aria Of Vernal Tombs/20 Buck Spin/2015 CD Review

Obsequiae  are  a  band  from  Minnesota  that  plays  a  melodic  mixture  of  black  and  dark  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Aria  Of  Vernal  Tombs"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  20  Buck  Spin.

Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  acoustic  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  the  intro  flutes  are  added  into t he  music  along  with  the  songs  adding  in  more  of  a  heavy  and  melodic  sound  which  also  introduces  solos  and  leads  onto  the  recording  as  well  as  some  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

Blast  beats  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  more  melodic  style  of  Greek  black  metal  influences  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  the  songs  can  also  be  very  atmospheric  at  times  and  you  can  also  hear  female  vocals  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

Blast  beats  can  be  heard  in  some  of  the  tracks  and  the  instrumentals  gives  the  album  a  medieval  folk  music  feeling  while  some  of  the  heavier  tracks  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  you  can  also  hear  some  melodic  death  metal  elements  in  the  bands  musical  style  at  times  along  with  a  touch  of  traditional  metal  and  some  of  the  faster  sections  also  bring  in  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling.

Obsequiae  takes  a  very  melodic  European  style  of  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  death,  traditional  metal  and  medieval  folk  music  to  create  their  own  style  of  dark  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  mysticism,  occult  and  nature.

In  my  opinion  this  is  a  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Obsequiae  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Autumnal  Pyre"  "Pools  Of  A  Vernal  Paradise"  "In  The  Absence  Of  Light"  and  "Orphic  Rites  Of  the  mystic".  8  out  of  10.

Obsequiae/Suspended In The Brume Of Eos/Bindrune Recordings/2001 CD Review

Obsequiae are a band from Minnesota that plays a a medieval form of dark/black metal and this is a review of their 2011 album "Suspended In The Brume Of Eos" which was released by Bindrune Recordings.

Drums range from slow to mid  paced drumming with some fast playing and blast beats, while the bass playing has a very strong and powerful tone with some heavy riffing.

Rhythm guitars range from slow to mid  paced riffs that combine black metal with dark metal as well as adding a lot of melody and some doom metal influences that gives the music a dark and haunting medieval feel, while the lead guitars are very dark and melodic sounding guitar solos, as for the acoustic guitars they bring a classical music and pagan feel to the music.

Vocals are all high pitched black metal screams, while the lyrics cover Paganism and nature styled themes, as for the production it has a very powerful and heavy feel to it.

In my opinion Obsequiae are a very good melodic dark metal band, and if you are a fan of this style, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Altars Of Moss" "Suspended In The Brume Of Eos" "The Wounded Fox" and "Cabin Lights". RECOMMENDED BUY.
