1. For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
E: We are nothing more than a part of the never-ending cycle of corruption in this world. Life gave us corrupted minds and perverted desires and we choose to channel it in our music in hopes that some vulnerable people will absorb it and start living more destructive lives. The music is NOT intended for anyone's enjoyment.
Nihilisten: “E” told it good enough, i don’t have much more to say about that.
2. How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recordings?
Nihilisten: When i first started the project and released the Paranoia EP, it was all improvised and in one take. While recording Reach The Purity, i only did the drums and also vocals on my 2 tracks. But the recording-style was the same. Mostly improvisation, we don’t write music. It’s just channeling emotions, so it can become anything or nothing.
E: I don't know, some kind of very noisy and depressive experimental black metal. We haven't really put much thought into how we should sound and that's why every release sounds very different. When we start recording, whatever happens happens. And since musicality is not in the focus at all we can just focus on sounding the worst possible. It's hard to focus on writing something technical and innovative when you're bleeding from multiple flesh wounds or having severe panic attacks. We feel horrible when writing and recording so of course it's going to sound horrible. Otherwise what would be the point?
3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
E: Corruption, depression, melancholy, homicidal and suicidal thoughts, depravity, self harm, blood rituals and mental illness.
Nihilisten: Self-torture and madness, simply put.
4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Nihilistic Pain'?
Nihilisten: Actually, i was listening to Nihilistic Misanthropy way back before i started Nihilistic Pain and also before i even was a member of Nihilistic Misanthropy. I was thinking “Damn, i need a good fucking obscure DSBM band”. I played around a little with their name due to it being really great. So i ended up with Nihilistic Pain. I haven't put so much thought in the name itself after that.
5. Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you planning on expanding the line up in the future or do you chose to remain a duo?
E: Studio-wise we will always be a duo. But we are thinking about taking it to the next level by playing live. If we do, some live-members will probably be needed. But we have a lot of requirements and i believe it will be hard to find musicians willing to cope with what we're all about. The reason why we work so well together is that we always encourage sick behaviour from one another rather than try to prevent it. During the recording of "Nighttimes Torment" I was very close to attacking somebody (name left out) with an axe before recording the vocals. And it's not like Nihilisten tried to prevent it, at all.
Nihilisten: As “E” said, it will only be us two studiowise. We are the perfect storm when we work. Two fucking psychopaths who encourage everything. As he said, the “axe-attack” is a good example. I did not try to prevent it, and i don’t see any reason why i should have tried to prevent it.
6. Currently the band is signed to 'obscure insanity Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
E: It is Nihilistens label. The tape version of our EP (which will be containing something special) will be released there but the CD version will probably be released somewhere else.
Nihilisten: Haha, it’s my own label. First named “Xanax Records” and i just released my own bands (Alfheim’s first EP was the first release on the label). The aim there is to focus on obscure bands that i myself find interesting, and also my own projects. The Reach The Purity CD will be released on Winterwolf Records while the tapes will be on Obscure Insanity Records.
8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
E: Most tend to think it is very raw and extreme. Most probably think it's a little too much. A few fucking psychopaths seem to really enjoy it and even fewer seem to understand it and embrace the concept, which is our aim. Of course we always like to hear from people who enjoy it but it can't even compare to the feeling when people listen, understand and ACT. We have gotten a lot of personal self harm images from people letting us use it in different ways and we really like receiving this kind of support. It shows that we are getting somewhere with our visions.
Nihilisten: “E” told it good enough. Some understand it, others don’t. I showed one of my friends “The Life I Was Given”, she told me i was insane. That’s the kind of reactions i prefer recieving.
9. Are any of the band members also involved with any other bands or musical projects?
(I have to send it in 2 parts)
E: Yes. I play in Nattkaos, Pandora and Vargtimma. I have releases with each and every one planned this year.
Nihilisten: Haha, too many. We both have had some different projects. My main band beside Nihilistic Pain is Dysfori, a dark atmospheric rock band. One of the side-projects i have is Corpsefuck, a rather fucked up “gore metal” band where E does some vocals now and then.
I also recently became the new guitarist and drummer in Nihilistic Misanthropy.
10. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
E: Whatever feels wrong.
Nihilisten: To the purity (death).
11. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
E: My main influences are Stalaggh, Abruptum, Gnaw their tongues, Noothgrush and Merzbow. That's also pretty much what I'm listening to currently. However, we try not to have any guidelines. Musical influences are almost inevitable I think. But that should never mean following any strict directions other than your own if you want to create something of real value.
Nihilisten: Abruptum, Silencer and some of the few pure DSBM bands that really shows the disgusting pain. What i listen to varies from day to day. But these are the musical inspirations.
