Ctulu/Cultis In Tenebris/Static Tension Recordings/2017 EP Review

Germany's  Ctulu  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  H.P  Lovecraft  inspired  fast,  raw  and  melodic  black  metal  style  of  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  ep  "Cultis  In  Tenebris"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Static  Tension  Recordings.

Militant  style  drum  beats  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  heavy  riffing  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  melody  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  when  vocals  are  brought  onto t he  recording  they  bring  in  a  mixture  of  growls  and  black  metal  screams.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  faster  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking,  elements  of  thrash  and  death  metal  are  also  utilized  at  times and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  clean  vocals  and  a  couple  of  tracks  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  guitars.

Ctulu creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  raw  and  melodic  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  while  also  progressing  with  their  style,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  based  upon  the  writings  of  H.P  Lovecraft.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ctulu  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  melodic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ctulu  Fhtagn"  and  "Mare  Belli".  8  out  of  10.

Ctulu/Self Titled/MDD Records/2016 CD Review

Ctulu  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this zine  and  plays  a  very  fast,  raw  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2016  album  which  will  be  released  by  MDD  Records.

A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  riffing and  the  solos  and  leads  also  use  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  black  metal screams  and  clean  singing  is  also  used  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent amount of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  and  it  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  whispers  can  be  heard  at  times  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments having  a  very  powerful  sound  to them  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  music  also  adds  elements  of  death  and  thrash  metal  into  some  parts  of  the  songs  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  guitars  can  be  heard.

Ctulu  creates  another  album  that  remains  true  to  the  fast,  raw  and  melodic  style  of  black  metal  that  was  established  on  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  Nightmares  and  Lovecraftian  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ctulu  and  if  you  are  a fan  of  fast,  raw  and  melodic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Treibjagd"  "Dammerung"  and  "Die  Arkaden  von  R'yleh".  8  out  of  10.

Ctulu Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band these days?
Good evening, Lars!
We’re busy working on our fourth album that we aim to record by the end of 2015. After ten years of the band’s history, we finally rehearse on a regular basis and I think this will have a huge impact on the new album.

2.A year back you had released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
„Seelenpiegelsplitter“  is a very diverse album with a big focus on the atmosphere. We had a lot of guest appearances and obscure instruments on this album (nyckelharpa, violin, harp…) and there are a lot of intermezzi and intros. We literally put everything into this album, something that critics may find exaggerated. The previous albums were a lot straighter and we aim for a straighter sound again these days.

3.With the newer music the main focus lyric wise deals with The Esoteric Order Of Dagon, can you tell us a little bit more about this concept?
On “Sarkomand”, the lyrical focus were the Dreamlands and nightmares and following the lyrics of “Arckanum der Tiefen”, we focused on the EOD on “Seelenspiegelsplitter”. The Esoteric Order Of Dagon praises the Deep Ones and their highest deity Dagon. The devotees slowly become underwater beings as they slip into the maelstrom of the Order.

4. I know that the band’s name and a good amount of the lyrics are based on the writings of H.P Lovecraft, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this author?
H.P. Lovecraft invented visual horror before horror movies were invented. I think this alone justifies this interest. Lovecraft delivers lyrical background on a vast variety of different levels.

5.The band originally started out as a studio project, what was the decision behind forming a full line up?
The band wanted to play live shows, that’s what initiated the full lineup back in 2006.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
We held a live ritual in an abandoned vault in June. This was a very special evening for us and some pictures can be seen on our website. Besides that, Cyprus 2013 with Rotting Christ was a great evening in a sold out venue with a great headliner. People like Sakis Tolis always remind me of what is really important as they just focus on their music and don’t give a fuck about allures. I really respect this band.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
We rather concentrate on our upcoming album, as we really want to take our time for this full length.

8.Recently your 2011 album was issued on vinyl to celebrate the bands 10th anniversary, can you tell us a little bit more about this release?
The record will come with a ritual poster from the “Lost Secrets” show that I described above. The posters are hand signed and the LP will be limited to 300 copies.

9.The band is currently signed to Black Blood Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
It’s a small label from Eastern Germany, with great bands like Waldgeflüster and ad-hoc.

10.Are any of the band members involved with any other musical projects these days?
At the moment, the main focus is on Ctulu, though there are some yet nameless projects.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
We want to create the hardest, fastest and most brutal album of our career and I think we got extremely strong material.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
For me, it can’t be brutal or hard enough at the moment. Bands like Inquisition, Deströyer666 or Totenmond have an influence on me, though I wouldn’t say the music directly inspires the sound. It’s more the idea and the concept behind these bands that influence me.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Thanks for your time,

Ctulu/Sarkomand/Black Blood Records/Human To Dust/2014 Vinyl Re-Issue Review

Ctulu  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  a  very  fast,  raw  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of   their  2011  album  "Sarkomand"  which  will  be  re-issued  in  December  on  vinyl  as  a  joint  effort  between  Black  Blood  Records  and  Human  TO  Dust.

A  very  fast,  raw  and  melodic  old  school  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  and  when  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  they  are  grim  sounding  screams  and  after  awhile  the  music  starts  bringing  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

At  times  you  can  hear  some  ritualistic  and  nature  sounds being  added into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  some  old  school  melodies  that  bring  a  NWOBHM  to  the  album  and  after  awhile you  can  hear  a  small  amount  of  chants  in  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  a  few  tracks  that  are  long  and  epic  in  length.

When  acoustic  guitars  and  melodic  vocals  are  utilized  they  give  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  and  you  can  also  hear  death  metal  growls  being  utilized  at  times  along  with  some  of  the  riffing  also  bringing  in  element s of  that  genre  and  a  good  portion  of  the  bands  musical  style  seems  to  be  very  heavily  influenced  by  the  90's  Swedish  black  metal  bands  while  some  of  the  tracks  also  bring  in  a  thrash  feeling  to  the  riffs  and  on  the  last  track  keyboards  are  added  into t he  music  while  the  song  also  still  brings  in  heavy  parts.

Ctulu  plays  a  Swedish  style  of  black  metal  that is  very  old  school,   raw  and  melodic  and  also  incorporates  some  death metal  influences  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  an  update  blackened  death metal  feeling,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  Lovecraft  and  Nightmare  themes.

In  my  opinion  Ctulu  are  a  very  great  sounding  fast,  raw  and  melodic  black  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Arckanum  Der  Tiefen"  "Traumturm"  and  "Mondsucht".  8  out  of  10.
