Horncrowned/Rex Exterminii(The Hand Of The Opposer/Ketzer Records/2020 CD Review

 

  Horncrowned  are  a  band  from  Columbia  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  fast,  raw  and  satanic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Rex  Exterminii(The  Hand  Of  The  Opposer)"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Ketzer  Records.

  A  very  dark,  evil  and  ritualistic  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  The  guitar  leads  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  while  the vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  blast  beats.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Growls  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  and  all  of  the  music  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.

  On  this  recording  Horncrowned  remains  true  to  the  fast  and  raw  style  of  black  metal  that  they  had  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Occultism  and  Anti  Christianity  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Horncrowned  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  fast,  raw  and  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Second  Death"  "Incedium"  "Confrontation"  and  "Crushing  the  Anointed  One".  8  out  of  10.

Horncrowned/Defanatus (Diabolus Adventus)/Ketzer Records/2014 CD Review

  Horncrowned  are  a  band  from  Columbia  that  plays  a  very  raw,  fast  and  brutal  form  of  satanic  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Defantas  (Diabolus  Adventus)"  which  was  released  by  Ketzer  Records.

  A  dark  synth  intro  starts  off  the  album  which  also  gives  the  music  a  very  ritualistic  feeling  along  with  some  militant  drum  beats  and  you  can  also  hear  voices  and  demonic  growls  in  the  background  and  after  the  intro  the  music  starts  to  get  more  fast,  raw  and  brutal  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  When  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  continue  the  chaotic  black  metal  tradition  the  band  creates  with  their  musical  style  and  after  awhile  they  band  also  brings  in  some  slow  and  mid  paced  parts  while  the  main  focus  remains  on  a  very  fast  and  brutal  sound and  when  melodies  are  utilized  they  bring  in  a  90's  Swedish  black  metal  feeling.

  At  times  you  can  hear  the  sounds  of  war  being  mixed  in  with  the  barbaric  heaviness  of  the  music  and  on  the  later  tracks  the  solos  and  leads  add  some  melody  into  their  fast  structures  and  at  time s you  can  hear  elements  of  death  metal  in  the  more  brutal  sections  of  the  bands  musical  style  along  with  some  vocals  bringing  in  small  amounts  of  growls  at  times  and  one  of  the  later  tracks  brings  in  a  few  seconds  of  melodic  chants  while  the  black  metal  vocals  still  have  more  of  a  dominating  presence  on  this  recording.

  Horncrowned  plays  a  style  of   satanic  black  metal  that  is  very  fast,  raw  and  brutal  as  well  as  bringing  back  a  lot  of  heaviness  and  aggression  that  is  very  rarely  utilized  these  days  and  the  band  stays  away  from  all  of  the  modern  trends  to  create  a  blasphemous  form  of  art,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism  and  Anti  Christian  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Hormcrowned  are  a  very  great  sounding  fast,  brutal  and  satanic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Extinction's  Apotheosis  (Finis  Orbis  Christiani)"  "Worship  of  the  Seven  Headed  beast  (Caper  Nigra  Cultum)"  "Charred  Shrines  (Baptismus  ignis)"  and  "Malign  &  Perverse  (Antichristus  Rex)".  8/5  out  of  10.
