Horna/Nyx - Hymnejä Yölle/W.T.C Productions/2024 Full Length Review

 

  Finland's  Horna  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  expanding  on  their  satanic  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "Nyx  -  Hymnejä  Yölle"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  W.T.C  Productions.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  classic  Finnish  tradition.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  clear  vocals  are  also  added  on  a  couple  of  tracks  and  acoustic  guitars  and  synths  are  added  on  the  closing  song  and  the  music  goes  into  more  of  neo-folk  direction

  On  this  recording  Horna  remains  true  to  the  fast,  raw  and  satanic  style  of  black  metal  that  they  have  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish   and  cover  Satanism,  Occultism,  Evil  and  Darkness  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Horna  and  if  you  are a   fan  of t his  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACSK  INCLUDE  "Hymni  I"  and  "Hymni  V".  8/5  out  of  10.

Horna/Kuoleman Kirjo/W.T.C Productions/2020 CD Review

 

  Finland's  Horna  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  raw  and  old  school  style  of  satanic  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Kuoleman  Kirjo"  which  will be  released  in  December  by  W.T.C  Productions.

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  90's  influences  but  keeping  it  modern  at  the  same  time.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  long  and  epic  in  length.  On  some  of  the  tracks  the  vocals  also  start  getting  more  deeper  and  angry  sounding  as  well  as  adding  in  a  clean  style  on  a  few  of  the  songs,  when  guitar  leads  and  solos  are  finally  added  onto  the  recording  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  all  of  the  music  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.

  On  this  recording  Horna  takes  their  satanic  style  of  black  metal  into  more  of  a  modern  and  melodic  style  but  keeping  the  raw aggression  and  heaviness  of  their  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  Satanism,  Evil,  Darkness  and  Death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Horna  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Saatanan  Viha"  "Elavana,  Kuolleena"  "Unohtumaton"  and  "Ota  Minut  Vastaan".  8  out  of  10.

Horna/Askel Lahempana Saatanaa/W.T.C Productions/2013 CD Review

  Horna  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  the  musical  style  on  this  recording  being  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sounding  satanic  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Askel  Lahempana  Saatanaa"  which  was  released  by  W.T.C  Productions.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  sound  effects  which  are  only  used  on  the  intro  bring  a  very  dark  and  occult  sound  to  the  music,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  old  school  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sounding  with  some  melody  being  thrown  into  the  riffing  at  times  as  well  as  some  thrash  influences,  while  the  lead  guitars are  very  melodic,  raw  and  primitive  sounding  black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads.

  Vocals  are  mostly  hateful,  grim  sounding  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  that  have  a  very  depressive  tone  to  them  at  times,  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  Satanism  and  Occultism  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Horna  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Askel  Lahempana  Saatanaa"  "Yhdeksas  Portti"  "Karsimyksin  Vuolitu  Hanen  Valittuna  Aanenaan"  and  'Ota  Ornaksesi,  Luoksessi".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Horna/Musta Surma/Vihan Vuodet/Moribund Records/2006 Split CD Re-Issue Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Finland's  Horna  and  Musta  Surma  called  "Vihan  Voudet"  which  was  originally  released  by  Grieventee  Productions  in  2004  and  re-issued  by  Moribund  Records  and  we  will  start  of  the  review  with  Horna  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical  style  that  I  would  describe  as  being  raw  and  primitive  sounding  satanic  black  metal.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sounding  in  the  true  black  metal  tradition  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  melody   and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording.

  Vocals  are mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal screams  that  have  a  depressive  sound  to  them  at  times  along  with  some  deep  demonic  growls  being  utilized  at  times  in  addition there  is  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing  being  utilized  on  one  song,  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  Satanism  and  Occultism  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Horna  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hel"  and  "Surun  Ikuistmi  Henki".  RECOMMENDED.

  Next  up  is  Musta  Surma  a  band  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  primitive  form  of  satanic  black  metal.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  primitive  black  metal  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  their  side  of  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  Finnish  style  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sounding  in  the  old  school  tradition  with  some  dark  sounding  melodies  being  thrown  into  the  riffing  at  times  which  utilizes  some  atmospheric  parts  as  well  as  some  thrash  influences  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording.

  In  my  opinion  Musta  Surma  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  primitive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kuolonmrysky"  and  "Usvan  Lapset".  RECOMMENDED.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  Finnish  black  metal.  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Horna/Mustu Kaipuu-Saatanan Tionen Evankeliumi/Moribund Records/December Morti/2009 CD Review

 Horna are a black metal band from Finland that is a very well known name in the scene and this is a review of their unreleased songs from the "Envaatnags Elfos Sold Esgantaavne" album and did not see the light of day until 2009 and this is a review of their unreleased track album "Musta Kaipuu-Saatanan Toinen Evankeluimi" which was released as a joint effort between Moribund Records and Debemur Morti.

Drums are mostly fast playing with some blast beats and slow to mid paced parts, while the bass playing has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the guitars which are very primal and at times they have a very powerful sound.

Rhythm guitars are mostly mid paced to fast black metal riffs that occasionally use some melodies but stick to being primitive and raw with a lot of early 90's influences and only a small amount of slow riffing, and there are little to no guitar leads or solos present on this recording.

Vocals are all high pitched black metal screams with some harsh style viking vocals being used on one song, while the lyrics are written in Finnish and cover Satanic and Occultic themes, as for the production it is very raw and dark sounding in the classic black metal tradition.

In my opinion this is another good release from Horna and fans of their other works would enjoy this recording as well. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Piina" "Hnohedettu Uaqni" "Oi Kallis Kotiman" and "Sieluhaaska". RECOMMENDED BUY.
