NightForest Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?
NightForest is an Austrian band, which doesn’t play Black Metal in a classical way, but you can still find different Black Metal-Influences  in our music. In the beginning we decided to create acoustic songs in the vein of the old Ulver “Kveldssanger”. At last we were writing Black Metal songs mixed with the  acoustic sounds and songs mentioned before.. NightForests lyrics and music (both are very complex) are about nature,  the human spirit and  the experiences of a hell, created by oneself.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the newer material and how it differs from the older releases?

In my opinion, the sound got better substantially, apart from that we remain true to our concept.
This means varied music and the ambition to redefine us constantly, if necessary. Of course some old stuff sounds raw compared to the new songs. Generally, NightForest’s sound evolved gradually, last but not least because of experiments with all kinds of technical stuff.
As the saying goes: „Rome wasn’t built in one day!“

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

That’s quite varied. It’s about our own experiences or imaginations, of course nature, the Celts and the medieval times and traditions.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

The name has different meanings to us. Sure our relation to the night, its  darkness and the forest. NightForest is also a place, where some people (lost and mourning souls) find themselves again “post mortem” of course. It’s a dark and sad place, depressive and cold, but every night has a  moon, which enlightens the darkness. Maybe hope?

5. Has the band been able to play live or is this a studio project?

When we started out we weren´t planning on playing live. But over the years the demand for NightForest and live performances grew and we decided to play a couple of gigs this year. Maybe we stop after these concerts if we don’t feel like doing more. We will perform live, as long as we like it. It´s not about becoming rich or famous obviously. Originally though we started out as a studio project.

6. Recently you have put out a split, what are you opinions about the other bands that have participated/

I know VARULV personally, they are our neighbors (laughs), together with this band we had the idea for a split release long ago and finally it worked. The formation TATTERED SOUL we haven´t known so far, but we liked the idea of a 3 way split ;)

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

Actually very well so far, considering that our ways and means to share our music are limited.
I think, we are on the right way to attract new fans and listeners.

8. What is going on with the other musical projects these days?

I don’t really know about our members other projects, but sure they are constructive. I personally just focus on my own stuff. For example KETELENS`S BRUKKE, which I am involved in, is working on a new CD, which is going to be released maybe this year.

9. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Every music, that I have listened to so far, inspired me. Essentially Norwegian Black Metal from the 90ies. I also listen to modern (rockin) Metal music and acoustic music. Nowadays I prefer bands like Sargeist, Behexen, Blut aus Nord.

10. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

I don’t now so far, but I promise, it won’t be boring!

11. Does Satanism or Occultism play any role in the music?

Satanism and Occultism is also a little part of our music, because these themes fit into the whole Black Metal mould! Our kind of music is occult and mystic anyway.

12. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

FUCK OFF AND DIE!

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

Nature stands above all and everybody.

Tattered Soul/Varulv/Nightforest/When Life Brings Sorrow Beyond Death/Naturmacht Productions/2012 3 Way Split Review

This  is  a  review  of  a  3  way  split  between  Germany's  Tattered  Soul,  and  Austria's  Varulv  and  Nightforest  called  When  Life  Brings  Sorrow  Beyond  Death"  which  was  released  by  Naturmacht  Productions  and  we  will  start  of  the  review  with  Tattered  Soul  which  plays  a  very  raw  and  primitive form  of  black  metal.

Drums range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the  music,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sounding  with  a  small  amount  of  blackened  death  metal  as  well  as  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  in  the  riffing,  while  the  lead  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  are  very  primitive  sounding  black  metal  guitar  leads  with  some  melody  that  dont  really  turn  into  solos.

Vocals  are  all  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams,  while  the  lyrics  cover  Necromancy  and  Dark  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it.

In  my  opinion  Tattered  Soul  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  primitive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  very  fan  of  this  style,  you  should  check out  their  music.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Necromancer".  RECOMMENDED.

Next  up is  Varulv  a  band  that  plays  a  melodic  raw  and  primitive  form  of  black  metal.

Drums  range  from mid paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the  music,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  on  the  last  song  they  sound  very  powerful.

Rhythm  guitars  range  from  mid  paced  to  fast  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  dark,  melodic,  raw  and  primitive  sounding   and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  which  are  only  used  briefly  on  the  last  song  they  use  finger  picking  to  enhance  the  darkness  that  is  coming  out  of  the  music.

Vocals  are  all  high  pitched  and  grim sounding  black  metal  screams,  while  the  lyrics   are  written  in  a  mixture  of  German  and  English  and  cover  dark  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it.

In  my  opinion  Varulv  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic,  raw  and  primitive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  style  of  music,  you  should  check  this  band  out.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Eternal  Darkness".  RECOMMENDED.

Closing  the  compilation  is  Nightforest  a  band  that  plays  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  form  of  black  metal.

Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  tone  with  riffs  that  dominate  throughout  the  recording.

Rhythm  guitars  range  slow,  from  mid  paced  to  fast  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  raw  and  catchy  with alot  of  catchy  riffing  being  thrown  into  the  riffing  as  well  as  some  melody  and  there  are  little  to  no guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on their  side  of  recording  except  for  the  last  song  and  they  have  a  melodic  feeling  to  them.

Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  with  some  deep growls  being  thrown  into  the  music  at  times  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing  being  utilized  on  the  last  song,  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  nature,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and primitive  sound  while  you  can  still  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording.

In  my  opinion  Nightforest  are  a  very  great  sounding  catchy,  raw  and  primitive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  style  of  music,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Into  The  Ancient  Forest".  RECOMMENDED.

In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  great  split  and  I  would  recommended  this  to  all  fans  of  melodic,  raw  and  primitive  black  metal.  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
