Kolotun Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

The band was formed 17 years ago. At first we played punk rock, but in the end it all grew into black metal and that's where our journey began. Which continues to this day.

2.In March you had released a new ep, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Everything became radically different because we treated the new record more professionally. Previously, we didn't have the opportunity to use good instruments, we played on homemade distortion pedals and half-drilled cymbals. In between while the band was split-up for these years band members has gone through various other musical styles from death metal to modern metalcore so this also helped to gain more skills and get focused critical view on material we produce nowadays. In comparison with 2002 release Feast At The Time Of Plague new material is more professional, diverse  and conceptual

3.The band was broken up for 18 years, what was the cause of the split and also the decision to reform?

We dispersed due to the fact that our band  leader, the Thrasher, became heavily addicted to psychotropic substances and could not continue to create, the drugs completely absorbed him. After 18 years, we just decided to continue our journey but without him.  A lot of material has appeared during this time and it is necessary to implement it into new songs

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer release and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Within our lyrics  the main concept is  trying to touch upon the psychological essence of a person, his fears, madness, attitude to the given world, the process of survival and relationship between man and the nature. In composing music, we try to pay attention to every note, every moment, make it as simple as possible from the heart so that the listener can understand it

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Kolotun'?

We took this word from the Russian language. Kolotun translated to English  means severe freeze, very cold weather . So it stands as a sign of human helpless state in front of force of nature and universe.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

The artwork is created by ourselves and it shows roots wrapping up of each other , meaning no one's deeds can be kept in secret and in result of that no one would reign forever , everything an everyone  is going through eternal circle of events.

7.On both album covers you also had some runes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this alphabet?

We really like using runes in our art because they look cool. But you have to be very careful with the runes, because each rune has its own meaning and when they are combined they give more strength or weakness. Though, for  further release we have switched to handmade logo because almost every black metal band uses runic fonts .

8.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?

At the beginning of history we gave a lot of local gigs . At the moment there will be the first concert with the new line-up, which we are looking forward to.When it will be available again , though

9.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

Kolotun is currently unsigned and promotes as DIY band. But we slowly look into label to have some physical releases to be pressed.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

We have several profiles on social networks and the most interesting statistic is that many people listen to us in Usa Uk and even in Japan. This is wildly cool. We are working to capture a larger audience. Every fan of our music is important to us

11.When can we expect another full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We are currently working on set of conceptual singles to be released. Then some  full-length album on the go

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

If said on black metal the biggest impression was made on us, of course, by Burzum, Darkthrone and all those old school black metal acts. Though, we are not into political aspects of some of those bands and not supporting hate propaganda or anything similar promoted by some of them . Just listening to music and atmosphere and get the vibe. We have different musical tastes in the band, from pop music to black metal.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

These are difficult times for all of us in this world. Appreciate your life and the lives of your loved ones help each other only in this way we will all overcome this difficult stage together

Kolotun/No One Will Reign Forever/2020 EP Review

Kolotun  are  a  band  from  Latvia  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2020  ep  "No  One  Wil  Reign Forever".

Dark  yet  heavy riffing  starts  off  the  ep  while  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  when  the  music  speeds  up.  Vocals  start  out  in  an  angry  shouting  style  while  keyboards  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  briefly  and  also  gives  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Black  metal  screams  are  also  utilized  at  times  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Spoken  word  samples  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  the  guitar  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody and  when  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  briefly  it  also  gives the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

Kolotun  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  atmospheric  sounding  as  well  as  having  a  vocal  approach  that  is  very  different  to  the  genre.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  and  life  themes.

In  my  opinion  Kolotun  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Cognition".  8  out  of  10.
