Ofermod/Acherontas/Black Altar/Drakonian Elitism/Odium Records/2023 3 Way Split Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Sweden's  Ofermod,  Greece's  Acherontas  and  Poland's  Black  Altar  called  "Drakonian  Elitism"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  Odium  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Ofermod  who  return  with  their  orthodox  style  of  occult  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  ritualistic  soundscapes,  synths, choirs  and  spoken  word  parts  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  and  all  of  the  instruments  on  their  side  of  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.\

  Vocals  are mostly  grim  yet  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  melody.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  some  of  the  riffing  also  showing  an  influence  of  death  metal,  shouts  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  The  Drakonian  Current,  Demonology  and  the  Left  Hand  Path.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from Ofermod  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  orthodox  and  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Agios  Ischyros  Belial".

  Next  up  is  Black  Altar  who  return  with  an  orthodox  and  occult  style  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  ritualistic  sounding  synths  and  bells  along  with  some  choirs  and  clear  vocals  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  direction.  Grim  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  their  side  of  the  recording  and  blast  beats  are  also  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  song.

  Throughout  their  side  of  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  faster  riffing  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  adding  in  more  of  a  melodic  style   The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  Draskonian  Current  and  Sitra  Achra  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Black  Altar  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "The  oracle  of  Divine  madness".

  Closing  the  split  is  Acherontas  who  return  with  their  occult style  of  black  metal,

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy ,  dark  and  melodic  sound  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Throughout  their  side  of  the  split  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  as  well  as  the  second  track  also  going  into  more  of  a  ritualistic  and  experimental  direction  which  also  adds  in  spoken  word  poarts  and  chant.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  Drakonian  Current  and  Magick  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Acherontas  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Intra  Psyche".  

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  occult  black  metal.  8/5  out  of  10.

Black Altar/Arcana of The Higher Principles/Zazen Sounds/2022 Compilation Album Review

 

  Black  Altar  are  a  band  originally  from  Poland  but  now  resides  in  the  United  Kingdom  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  satanic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  compilation  album  "Arcana  of  The  Higher  Principles"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  Zazen  Sounds  and  consists  of  songs  that  where  included  on  their splits  with  Kirkebrann,  Beastcraft,  Varathron  and  Thornspawn.

  Dark  sounding  synths  and  ritualistic  sounds  start  off  the  compilation  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  deep  yet  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams.

  All   of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars  and  demonic  voices  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  one  song  also  introducing  clear  vocals  onto  the  compilation.  as  well  as  the  synths  also  making  a  return  on  some  of  the  intros  and  outros.  Gregorian  chants,  clean  playing  and  ritualistic  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style,  they  also  bring  in  a  Beastcraft  cover  and  one  song  is  also  an  industrial  orientated  re-mix  from  PreEmptive  Strike  0.1.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Occultism,  Darkness,  Evil   and  Misanthropy  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Black  Altar  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ancient Warlust"  "Tophet"  "Winds  ov  Decay"  and  "I'm  Demon".  8  out  of  10.

Black Altar/Vulture Lord/Deathiah Manifesto/Odium Records/2022 Split Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Poland's  Black  Altar  and  Norway's  Vulture  Lord  called  "Deathiah  Manifesto"  which  will  be  released  on  January  15th  by  Odium  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Black  Altar  who  returns  with  their  satanic  style  of  black  metal.

 Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  apocalyptic  sounding  intro  which  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  synths  and  spoken  word  parts  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a r aw  feeling.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Misanthropy,  Darkness  and  Evil  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Black  Altar  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK "Sacrilegious  Congregation".

  Next  up  is  Vulture  Lord  who  return  with  their  old  school  mixture  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  fast  and  aggressive  thrash  metal  sound  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast b eats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  tremolo  picking  and  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  music  is  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  to  90's  era.

  Throughout  their  side  of  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  old  school  style  as  well  as  some  death  metal  growls  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  songs  and  synth  can  also  be  heard  on  their  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Anti  Christianity,  Blasphemy,  Death  and  hatred  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Vulture  Lord  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  black  metal  with  elements  of  death  and  thrash  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RFECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Dominoes  Of  Death".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  i  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  old  school  and  satanic  black  metal.  8  oout of  10.

Black Altar/Kirkebrann/Deus Inversus/Odium Records/2020 Split CD Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Poland's  Black  Altar  and  Norway's  Kirkebrann  called  "Deus  Inversus"  which  will  be  released  on  June  30th  by  Odium  records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Black  Altar  who  returns  with  their  satanic  style  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  off  with  a  very  dark  and  ritualistic  sound  along  with  a  brief  use  of  evil  sounding  chants  before  going  into  a  very  fast,  raw  and  melodic  musical  direction which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts. Choir  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style.  At  times  the  vocals  also  bring  in  more  of  deep  yet  aggressive  approach  and  all  of  the  songs  also  sound  very  modern  sounding  and  synths  can  also  be  heard  on  the  outro.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Misanthropy,  Darkness  and  Evil  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Black  Altar  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  satanic  black  emtal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Ancient  Warlust".

 Next  up  is  Kirkebrenn  who  return  with  a  very  traditional  and  blasphemous  style  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  heavy  riffing  and  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  along  with  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  in  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  music  also  adds  in  a  good  balance  between  old  school  and  modern  influences,  melodies  are  also  added  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  classical  guitars  are  also  added  on  the  closing  track  which  is  also  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Norwegian  and  cover  blasphemy,  darkness  and  winter  themes.   

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Kirkebrann  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  melodic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Et  Nederlag".  8  out  of  10.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  raw,  melodic  and  satanic  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Black Altar/Suicidal Salvation/Darker Than Black Records/2013 EP Review

  Black  Altar  are  a  band  from  Poland  that  plays  a  satanic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  ep  "Suicidal  Salvation"  which  was  released  by  Darker  Than  Black  Records.

  "The Sentence"  which  is  also  the  first  song  on  the   ep  opens  up  with  dark  and  atmospheric  sounding  synths  and  a  few  seconds  later  heavy  and  melodic  guitar  riffs  kick  in  along  with  some  blast  beats  from  the  drums  and  a  few  seconds  later  grim  sounding  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  kick  in  and  a  minute  later  the  music  goes  into  a  slower  direction  for  a  few  seconds  and  then  returning  to  being  fast.

  "Suicidal  Salvation"  which  is  also  the  title  track  begins  with  fast  black/death  metal  guitar  riffs  and  blast  beats  from  the  drums  and  then  the  music  slows  down  and  adds  in  synths  and  melodic  guitar  leads  before  reverting  back  to  fast  and  adding  in  grim  black  metal  vocals  and  then  the  song  starts  alternating  between  slow  and  fast  parts  and  close  to  the  end  of  the  song  there  are  more  guitar  leads  that  start  coming  in  and  out.

  "Journey  To  The  Astral  Realm"  opens  up  with  dark  and  evil  sounding  atmospheric  synths  and  the  song  is  an  instrumental  piece  with  no  vocals,  drums  or  guitars  being  present.

 "Pulse  Of  The  Universe"  returns  the  heaviness  with  slow  and  dark  guitar  riffs  along  with  atmospheric  background  sounds  and  drums  which  also  lead  to  grim  black  metal  vocals  and  a  few  seconds  alter  the  music  speeds  up  along  with  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  then  alternating  between  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  adding  in  a  brie f use  of  guitar  leads.

  "666  MegaBeast"  which  is  also  the  last  song  on  the  ep  opens  up  with dark,  melodic  and  fast  guitar  riffs  along  with  drums  and  blast  beats  a  few  seconds  later  and  then  the  black  metal  screams  kick  in  as  well  as  adding  in  melody  in  certain  sections  of  the  song  and  then  the  music  slows  down  a  bit  and  you  can  hear  some  bass  guitars  along  with  a  small  amount  of  guitar  leads  before  speeding  up  again  and  then  alternating  between  slow  and  fast  parts  and  then  the song  closes  with  some  keyboards..

  Song  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Occultism  and  Suicide  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  dark  sound  to  it.

  In  my  opinion  Black  Altar  are  a  very  great sounding  heavy  and  melodic  satanic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The Sentence"  and  "666  MegaBeast".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
