Grylle are a band from France that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a medieval form of black metal and this is a review of t heir 2024 album "Egrotants, Souffreteux, Cacochymes, Covidards" which will be released in November by Antiq.
The sounds of medieval battles and folk instruments start off the album along with some grim black metal screams a few seconds later. When percussion is utilized they also give the music more of a tribal feeling while all of the songs avoid the use of any heavy, distorted or traditional metal instruments.
Sarrazin guitars are also utilized at times while some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length. A lot of the album also finds different ways of going into a heavier direction despite all of the instruments being acoustical along with some songs also adding in a small amount of choir style vocals.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard along with some of the songs also adding in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. Melodies are also utilized quite a bit throughout the recording, spoken word parts can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in French and cover plague, diseases and strange afflictions.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Grylle and if you are a fan of medieval black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Grand Marche des Covidards' "Reservement de Confortale Presence" and "Le Triomphe de la Mort". 8 out of 10.
