Skuggor/The Expanse/Nordvis Produktion/2026 Full Length Review

  Sweden's  solo  project  Skuggor  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  form  of  ambient  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2026  album  "The  Expanse"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  The  recording  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  blast  beats   can  also  be  heard  briefly  when  the  album  speeds  up  on  a  couple  of  tracks.  A  lot  of  the  music  also  adds  a  minimalist  approach  to  the  genre,  when  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  fast  riffs  they  also  give  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  songs  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction.

  On  this  recording  Skuggor  continues  to  expand  on  the  atmospheric  style  of  ambient  black  metal  that  he  has  introduced  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Skuggor  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  'The  Expanse"  and  "The  Nothing".  8  out  of  10.

Skuggor/Where Sun Resigns/Naturmacht Productions/2025 Full Length Review

 

  Skuggor  are  a  solo  project  from  Finland  that has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  ambient  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2025  album  "Where  Sun  Resigns"  which  will  be  released  in  may  by  Naturmacht  Productions.

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can b e  heard  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  The  album  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  a  one  of  the  tracks  is  also  long  and  epic  in  length,  the  tracks  also  mix  in  influences  from  both  the  modern  and  old  school  era's  of  the  genre..

  On  this  recording  Skuggor  goes  for  more  of  an  aggressive  and  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  and  darkness  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Skuggor  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  ambient  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Writhe"  and  "Time  Folds  Spirals".  8  out  of  10.

Skuggor/Whispers of Ancient Spells/Naturmacht Productions/2024 Full Length Review

 

  Skuggor  are  a  solo  project  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2024  album  "Whispers  of  Ancient  Spells"  which  will b e  released  on  February  23rd  by  Naturmacht  Productions.

  Dark  soundscapes  and  ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Synths  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  good  mixture  of  old  school  and  modern  influences.  When  the  album  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  song  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  most  of  the  tracks  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction.

  Skuggor  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  slow,  dark  and  atmospheric  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  shadows  of  the  past,  ancient  forest,  darkness,  mist  and  myths.

  In  my  opinion  Skuggor  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Whispers  of  Ancient  Spells"  and  "A  Forgotten  past".  8 out  of  10.
