Nechochwen/Spelewithiipi/Nordvis Produktion/2025 Full Length Review

 

  West  Virginia's  Nechochwen  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  them  moving  away  from  the  black  metal  style  of  previous  releases  and  goes  into  more  of  a  dark  folk  direction  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Spelewithiipi"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

  Acoustic  guitars  which  also  add  in a   mixture  of  finger  picking  and  full  chords  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  wind  sounds  a  few  seconds  later.  Native  American  style  folk  instruments  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  amount  of  percussion  and  a  lot  of  the  tracks  are  instrumentals.

  At  times  the  music  also  captures  a  very  shamanistic  and  tribal  atmosphere  while  each  song  also  sounds  very  different  from  each  other  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  slide  guitars  onto  the  album,  wind  instruments  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  On  this  recording  Nechochwen  moves  away  from  the  black  metal  elements  and  harsh  vocals  of  previous  releases  and  goes  into  more  of  an  instrumental  dark  folk  direction  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Nechochwen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dark  folk,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "spelewithiipi"  "mthothwathiipi"  and  "Primordial  Passage".  8  out  of  10.

Nechochwen/Kanawha Black/Bindrune Recordings/2022 CD Review

 

  West  Virginia's  duo  Nechochwen  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  progressive  and  folk  influenced  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Kanawha  Black"  which  will  be  released  in  may  by  Bindrune  Recordings.

  A  very  heavy  and  aggressive  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  Clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recordings  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  some  of  the  riffing  also  showing  influences  of  other  metal  styles  as  well  as  the  songs  also  adding  in  some  classical  instrumentation.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  sounding  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  are  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  traditional  metal  style.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  adding  in  elements  of  folk  music  and  acoustic  guitars,  growls,  whispers  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  album.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Native  American  Traditions,  Rituals,  History  and  Nature  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Nechochwen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  progressive  and  folk  influenced  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kanawha  Black"  "Visions,  Dreams  And  Signs"  and  "Across  The  Divide".  8  out  of  10.

Bhleg/Nechochwen/Sorlande Sky/Majestic Translucence/Nordvis Produktion/2019 Split EP Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Sweden's  Bhleg  and  West  Virginia's  Nechochwen  called  "Sorlande  Sky/Majestic  Translucence"  which  will  be  released  on  May  31  by  Nordvis  Produktion  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Bhleg  a  duo  that  plays  a  folk  influenced  form  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  folk  music  elements  and  chants  before  going  into  more  of  a  melodic  and  heavier  direction,  Their  track  is  7  minutes  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  folk  instruments  and  acoustic  guitars  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  music.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  while  all  of  the  instruments  sound  very  powerful.  When  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  are  utilized  they  give  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  song  also  brings  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  along  with  a  small  amount  of  melodic  guitar  leads  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  nature,  existence  and  cosmos  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Bhleg  are  a  very  great  sounding  folk  influenced  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side of  the  split.

  Next  up  is  Nechochwen  who  return  with  their  folk  inspired  form  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  acoustic  guitars  while  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  also  mix  in  elements  of  folk  music.  Clean  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody and  grim  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  music.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to   them  and  the  music  also  always  sticks  to  a  slower  direction  as  well  as  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.   The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  and  Native  American  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Nechochwen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  folk  inspired  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  atmospheric  and  folk  influenced  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Nechochwen/The Ancient Pulse/Nordvis/2018 Compilation CD Review

  Nechochwen  are  a  duo  from  West  Virginia  that  has  had  an  album  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal  and  Appalachian  folk  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  compilation  album  "The  Ancient  Pulse"  which  will  be  released  on  October  26th  by  Nordvis.

  Acoustic  guitars  start  off  the  compilation  and  also  bring  in  elements  of  Appalachian  folk  music  as well  as  using  a  mixture  of  full  chords  and  finger  picking  along  with  some  clean  vocals  a  few  seconds  later  while  some  songs  also  bring  in  steel  guitars  and  percussion  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Some of  the  tracks  are  instrumentals  while  grim  black  metal  vocals  are  into  the  music  as  the  compilation  progresses  which  also  leads  to  a  heavier  direction  along with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  as  well  as  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  mixing  in  elements  of  doom  metal.

  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  using  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  the  music  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.    later  song s also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  psychedelic  elements,  nature  sounds   and  Native  American  style  chanting  and  they  also  bring  in  Rotting  Christ  and  Ozzy  Osbourne  covers.

  On  this  compilation  Nechochwen  plays  some  songs  in  an  Appalachian  folk  music  direction,  some  in  more  of  an  atmospheric  black  metal  style  and  they  also  mix  the  2  different  genres  at  times  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Native  American  Traditions,  Tribal  Rituals,  Nature  and  History  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Nechochwen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal  and  Appalachian  folk  music,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Lodge"  "Allumhammochwen  -  The  Crossing"  "Heya  Hona"  and  "Song  Of  The  White  Tailed  Deer".  8  out  of  10.

Nechochwen/OtO/Bindrune Recordings/2012 CD Review

  Nechochwen  are  a  1  man  band  from  West  Virginia  that  plays  a  mixture  of  pagan  folk  music  and  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "OtO"  which  was  released  by  Bindrune  Recordings.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  without  utilizing  blast  beats ,  while  the  synths  bring  a  very  dark,  atmospheric,  progressive  and  shamanistic  sound  to  the  music,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  have  a very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Acoustic  guitars  use  finger  picking  and  full  chords  to  bring  a  pagan  folk  music  sound  to  the  recording,  while  the  rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  pagan/black  metal  riffs  that  utilize  a  great  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies,  as  for  the  lead  guitars  they  are  very  melodic  sounding  guitar  solos  and  leads.    

  Vocals  range  from  clean  folk  music  singing,  shamanistic  chanting,  to  high  pitched  black  metal screams,  deep  growls,  as  well  as  some  spoken  word  parts  that  bring  the  neo-folk  element  into  the  music,  while  the  lyrics  cover  Paganism,  Occultism  and  Nature,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it.

  in  my  opinion  Nechochwen  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  dark  pagan  folk  music  and  black metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  style,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "On  The  Wind"  and  "Hey  Ya  Ho  Na".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
