Néfastes Interview

.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Julien (voclas): Néfastes is born during the pandemic in November 2020. Ex-Benighted guitarist Liem called me because he just finished writing some very brutal and deranging Black Metal tracks and wanted me to write lyrics and sing on it just as a fun project between friends… Lime, being an amazing music writer, it happened that the combination of our work on these 2 or 3 tracks sounded so good that we thought about making it a bit more seriously and involve our brother Olivier as bass player and keep on writing new stuff. When we posted our first track “Progéniture Décadente” on the internet, the reactions were amazing and we immediately received offers for being signed on a label and record an album.

2.You have an album coming out in June, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

We play some kind of brutal Black Metal mixing up melodies and very creepy passages to create a disturbing and creepy atmosphere towards a very fast and intense music. For this project, I paid attention to make the most insane and disgusting black metal vocals I ever made and it was such a great challenge!

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

We are talking about everything that we find disgusting in what human became these last years… narcissist, self-righteous, paranoid and rejecting as soon as someone has a different opinion, and also the way modern parents give up on educating their kids because they are too “busy” with social media…

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Nefastes'?

It’s Liem’s idea, he wanted to underline that our music is made to hurt and denounce and also that human race has become “Néfastes”

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

It’s about 2 songs “Fuck With the Bull, You Get The Horn” and what follows it in the song “Supplice”. It’s actually about a guy thinking that he knows the truth in everything and has some “cyber-war” with everyone who has a different opinion, rejects everyone around him if they disagree on a topic or another… until he decides to go live in wild nature and finds himself in total loneliness, ending with hanging himself… And no one will find him, just because no one is searching for him.

6.Are there any plans for any live shows once the pandemic ends?

No, it’s a studio project so far

7.The new album is coming out on 'Source Atone Records', how did you get in contact with this label?

They got in contact with us immediately after we posted our first single. We received several offers so fast but SAR showed such a motivation signing us and wanting to spread the Néfastes music in such a wide way that we decided to sign with them!

8.on a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

Only with our first single, we got more than 1500 followers in a week! We received so many heartwarming reactions, from Europe and USA mostly and we can’t wait for the album to be released so they can enjoy the whole thing! Of course the name of Benighted is no stranger to that, many people were curious about how would a Black metal band would sound with my vocals, I guess.

9.What is going on with 'Benighted' these days, a band that also shares some of the same band members?

We are still working on the promotion of our new album “Obscene Repressed” and waiting for touring to show the new songs on stage! It’s so frustrating to wait that long to play live again! The cool thing with Néfastes is that is the occasion to start with Liem and Olivier a project together like we started Benighted 23 years ago! We know each other by heart and things went so easily on Néfastes!

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I think we will just try to push the limit in terms of insanity and darkness in our music! Also we pay attention to have catchy choruses that people easily reminds and stick to the head!

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I would say MArduk, Shining, Dark Funeral or Dissection. My big Black Metal music crush of the moment is Der Weg Einer Freiheit that I love so much!! Incredible music !

12.before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you so much for this interview and support! We thank all the people who are now involved in this new project, we invite everyone to discover our “Scumanity” album and help us spread the sickness!

Néfastes/Scumanity/Source Atone Records/2021 Full Length Review

Néfastes  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  a  misanthropic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Scumanity"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Source  Atone  Records.

A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  brutal  sounding  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  a  small  amount  of  melody  is  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  music  also  adds  in  both  old  school  and  modern  influences.  One  of  the  tracks  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  apocalyptic  soundscapes  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction  along  with  a  couple  of  tracks  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing,  a  later  song  is  also  an  instrumental  and  a  brief  use  of  guitar  leads  is  also  added  on  the  closing  song.

Néfastes  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  fast,  raw,  brutal  and  misanthropic  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  an  aversion  to  humanity  and  misanthropic  themes.

In  my  opinion  Néfastes  are  a  very  great  sounding  brutal  and  misanthropic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Fuck  With  the  Bull,  You  Get  The  Horn"  "Scumanity"  and  "Carved  Into  The  Flesh".  8  out  of  10.
