Tulus/Fandens Kall/Soulseller Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Norway's  Tulus  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  old  school  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Fandens  Kall"  which  will  be  released  in  February  by  Soulseller  Records.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Most  of  the  music  is  very  rooted  in  the  classic  Norwegian  style  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  album  also  bringing  in  elements  of  black'n'roll  as  well  as  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing.

 The  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  old  school  style  when  they   are utilized  along  with  a  couple  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars,  synths,  piano's  and  female  vocals  and  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments,  spoken  word  parts  are  also  added  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Norwegian  and  cover  Dark  Folklore  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Tulus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  Norwegian  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Fandens  Kall"  "Slagmark"  "Sjelesmerte"  and  "Snomyrke".  8 out  of  10.

Tulus/Pure Black Energy/Spulseller Records/2021 CD Re-Issue Review

 

  Tulus  are  a  band  from  Norway  that h as  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  played  a  rock  influenced  form  of  Norwegian  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1996  album  "Pure  Black  Energy"  which  was  re-issued  in 2021  by  Soulseller  Records  and  also  consists  of  1991  rehearsal  tracks  and  their  1994  demo  "Samlerans  kammer"  as  bonus  tracks.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Element s of  black'n'roll  can  also  be  heard  in  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  female  vocals.

 Keyboards  and  stringed  instruments  can  also  be  heard on  a  couple  of  songs  along  with  the  rehearsal  tracks  also  bringing  in  even  more  of  a  raw  style  than  the  album  as  well  as  the  1994  demo  songs  also  bringing  in  more  of  an  atmospheric  yet  raw  Norwegian  black  metal  style.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Norwegian  and  cover  Dark  Folklore  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Tulus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  Norwegian  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUD E "Samlerans  Kammer"  "Kaldt"  "Grav"  and  "De  dødes  attest".  8 out  of  10.

  Tulus  are  a  band  from  Norway  that  has  had  an  album  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  dark  and  cold  form  of  black  metal and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Old  Old  Death"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Soulseller  Records.

 A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  music  also  mixing  in  influences  from  both  the  first  and  second  wave  era's  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Elements  of  black'n'roll  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  music  mostly  sticking  to  a  mid  tempo  direction.  A  small  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  at  times  as  well  as  the  tremolo  picking  also  giving  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  when  it  is  utilized.

  Synths  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  briefly  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  guitar  leads  onto  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Norwegian  and  cover dark  folklore  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Tulus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dark  and  cold  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hel"  "Folkefall"  "Grunn  Grav"  and  "In Memoriam".  8  out  of  10.

Tulus/Evil 1999/Hammerheart Records/1999 CD Review

  Tulus  a  re  a  band  from  Norway  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  primitive  form  of  atmospheric  Norwegian  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1999  album  "Evil  1999"  which  was  released  by  Hammerheart  Records.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the  music  at  times,  while  the  synths  when  they  are  utilized  bring  a  very  dark  and  atmospheric  sound  to the  music,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  heavy  tone  with  black  metal  riffs  that  dominate  throughout  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  Norwegian  black  metal  riffs  that  have  a  great amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  being  thrown  into  the  riffing,  while  the  lead  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  they  have  a  traditional  metal  feeling  to  the  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  classical  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  they  use  finger  picking  to  enhance  the  darkness  that  is  coming  out  of  the  music.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing,  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Norwegian  and  cover  dark  folklore,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  heavy  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

  In  my  opinion  Tulus  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  primitive  atmospheric  Norwegian  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  style  of  music,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Tarantulus"  "Draug"  "Salme"  and  "Darsknap  Lil  Visdom". RECOMMENDED  BUY.
