Nemus/Stein-Mensch/Naturmacht Productions/2020 Full Length Review

Nemus  is  a  solo  project  from  Germany  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  post  black  metal  with  touches  of  death  metal   and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Stein-Mensch"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Naturmacht  Productions.

A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  synths  a  few  seconds  later.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  vocals  bring  in  a  mixture  of  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  which  also  have  a  more  dominant  presence  than  the  previous  recording.

A  couple  of  the  tracks  also  introduces  clean  playing  and  grim  spoken  words  onto  the  album  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  brutal  sounding  blast  beats.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts

Clean  vocals  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  songs  along  with  some  elements  of  post  black  metal,  a  couple  of  tracks  are  also  long  and  epic  in  length.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  a  man  who  once  climbed  to  the  top  of  the  mountain  and  his  experiences  and  journey.

In  my  opinion  this is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Nemus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  post  black  and  blackened  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Der  Stieg"  "Der  Golem"  and  "Der  Flutch".  8  out  of  10.

Nemus/See-Mensch/Naturmacht Productions/2018 CD Review

Nemus  are  a  solo  project  from  Germany  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2018  album  "See-Mensch"  which  will  be  released  on  November  26th  by  Naturmacht  Productions.

Water  and  nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  adding  in  more  of  a  heavier  style  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount of  melody  along  with  the  music  also  utilizing  a  great  amount  of  atmospheric  sounding  synths  and  the  vocals  bring  in  a  depressive  style  of  black  metal  screams.

Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  using  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  post  metal  elements  and  some  tracks  also  add  folk  instruments  and  acoustic  guitars  onto  the  recording  as  well  as  some  death  metal  growls  also  being  used  briefly.

Nemus  plays  a  style  of  post  black  metal  that  is  very  atmospheric  and different  sounding  while  also  having  its  aggressive  moments,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  a  water  human  being  that  evolved  into  a  chimera  and  his story  of  self  hatred,  agony  and  at  some  point  acceptance.

In  my  opinion  Nemus  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  post  black  metal  solos  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "In  Die  Tiefe"  and  "Nachts  Im  Teich".  8  out  of  10.

Nemus Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?
Nemus is an Atmospheric/Post-Black-Metal project.
So it is a really melancholic kind of metal with midtempo sections, some fast blast beats and acoustic parts which try to give the whole music some relaxing moments and atmosphere. The lyrics are shouted in german language and I have some folk influences in my music I guess.

2.Recently you have released your fist album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
On my first album I used many nature sounds like rain, wind, birds tweeting and small gurgling streams to make the listener feel like sitting right in the woods.
And that’s probably the meaning of my whole music project. I want to give the listener some melancholic moments and maybe some of natures magic.
I think there isn’t any better genre then black metal to convey emotions to the listener. So I took these forest samples and inserted them into some melodic and melancholic guitar riffs. In conclusion to describe the musical sound of „Wald-Mensch“ I would say naturespheric.

3.According to the fb and metal archives page you started this project this year and already have an album out this early, do you put a great amount of time and effort into writing music?
Yes I just started in the beginning of January as I had a week of vacation. It is probably a small amount of time to write a whole album within 6 days, but the riffs and lyrics just poured out of me. The mixing process needed 3 more weeks. I could have spent way more time in the writing process of curse, but I wanted to record the first impulses, that came to my mind for my first album to see in which direction it will lead me.
I probably use every second of the free time I’m given beside being a trainee to make music. It’s my biggest passion since something like 10 years, I think. And the first one-man-project I started is 7 years ago in the age of 15.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with your music?
The main topic of my first release is a kind of fable I wrote. It’s about a man, who goes deep inside the woods and then bogs down into the forest floor.
He starts to get one with the forest. At first he is scared as hell, but after some time he get’s used to it and starts to grow roots to becomes a huge tree-man.
Each song describes a phase of this growing tree-man and all the feelings and necessities he has. And in the end of curse his death.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Nemus'?
The meaning of the word Nemus is forest or grove and it’s latin. For me, Nemus is a way to get rid of anger and stress I experience in every day life.
My inspiration for this band is the beauty of nature and my respect for it’s force.

6.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to remain solo?
I’ve played in many local bands before. And I am still playing in a band, in which I share songwriting with another guitarist. So I’m open to work with other musicians of curse! I love to learn from other musicians and music engineers and share experiences. Currently im thinking about to set up a live-band for Nemus with some friends of mine, but for songwriting I would prefer to stay solo.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
Yes, I am unsigned and I hope, this will change! I would really like to cooperate with some guys who know how to merchandise music and maybe get some support for my next recordings. It’s really hard to manage a band with that small amount of time I’m given.
There is/was some interest, yes, but I would like to cooperate with a label, that provides the kind of music, that Nemus stands for. Or, at least, hard metal.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of atmospheric black metal?
The feedback was good so far! As Nemus is a really new project, I don’t have a huge audience. But there were some guys from North/South America, Russia and different countries of EU reviewing Wald-Mensch and the reactions always were positive and I’m glad about this!

9.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?

In the future I hope, I will have the ability to spread my music and to get heard by a bigger audience. Maybe a contract with a label and more following Nemus albums! The songwriting for my Next LP has already started and this time I will take myself more time to make the songs as good as possible.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
My influences are exactly the bands which I’m am listening to day and night at the moment. Just to call some names Alcest, Lantlos, Harakiri For The Sky, Agalloch, Mgla, Deafheaven, Agrypnie, Heretoir, Der Weg Einer Freiheit, Austere, Galar… The list goes on.
I also like electro like minimal techno and house as well as indie and alternative.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
I’m really into fitness and spend a few hours a week in the gym.
I often go out at weekends because I live in Bamberg, the city with most breweries in the whole world! So how could I not?
The time that’s left I sit in my home studio making music or listening to vinyls.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
I would like to thank you for the chance to be interviewed!

Nemus  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2017  album  "Wald-Mensch".

Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  classical  guitars  and  keyboards  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  heavy  and  melodic  musical  direction  along  with  all  of  the  instruments  sounding  very  powerful  and  after  awhile  spoken yet  grim  black  metal  style  vocals  are  added  onto  the  recording.

Most  of  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  the  tremolo  picking  giving  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  edge  and  nature  sounds  are  also  mixed  in  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  briefly.

A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  few  depressive  screams  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean  playing  also  makes  a  return  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording and  one  track  is  an  acoustic  instrumental  and  folk  instruments  are  added  onto  the  closing  song.
