Korgonthurus/Jumalhaaska/Woodcut Records/2023 Full Length Review

Finland's  Korgonthurus  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  satanic  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Jumalhaaska"  which  will b e  released  on  November  24th  by  Woodcut  Records.

Clean  playing  which  also  returns  on  later  songs  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  songs  also  mixing  in  influences  from  both  the  old  school  and  modern  era's  of  the  genre.

The  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  and  melancholic  moments  as  well  as  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  growls  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  closing  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  stringed  instruments.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  Satanism,  Melancholy  and  Darkness  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Korgonthurus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  Finnish  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Lankeemus"  and  "Autuas  karsimys".  8  out  of  10.

Korgonthurus/XX/Woodcut Records/2021 EP Review

Finland's  Korgonthurus  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  satanic  style  of  black  metal  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  ep  "XX"  which  was  released  by  Woodcut  Records.

A  very  evil  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  all  of  the  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  old  school  influences.

All  of  the  riffing  is  also  done  on  power  chords  while  also  avoiding  the  use  of  any  melody,  solos  or  leads.  When  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  all  of  the  music  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.

On  this  recording  Korgonthurus  remains  true  to  the  satanic  style  of  black  metal  that  they  have  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  Satanism  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Korgonthurus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Demonipaimen".  8  out  of  10.

A very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  At  times  the  music  also  has  its  melodic  and  atmospheric  moments  and  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  a  great  amount  of   blast  beats  can  also  be  heard.

When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  music  also  shows  influences  of  both  the  old  school  and  modern  styles.  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  deeper  vocals  onto  the  recording  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  clean  playing  and  classical  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  Satanism  and  Darkness  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Korgonthurus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Tuhontuoja"  and  "Nox".  8  out  of  10.

Korgonthurus Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Necron: After the recording, we have been mostly been updating and keeping up our live condition. Also composing new material.

2.In May you had released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Necron:What we wanted for "Vuohen Siunaus" was a clear but still raw sound. How it differs from the earlier works is that it was recorded by mr. Lius. All the other releases were recorded by our drummer Kryth. Because of lack of time we decided to outsource the recordings to mr. Lius.

3.Can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with your newer music?

Necron: Lyrics are made by Corvus. Topics vary from misanthropy to satanism. Always has, always will.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Korgonthurus'?

Necron: First of all, it is KORGONTHURUS ! To us Korgonthurus is a channel to express our satanic views.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Necron: We haven't done that much shows. One to remember is Under the Black Sun Festival in Germany. Surprisingly a lot of people came to see the show. Also our last show in Tampere, Finland was totally awesome experience.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

Necron: None whatsoever

7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your newer album by fans of black metal?

Necron: So far so good. Quite positive. What is the most important that we are satisfied with the end result, i personally couldn't care less what everyone else thinks about it.

8.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Necron: Three of the members also play in Totalselfhatred and we ( TSH ) have been recording the third album for a quite a long time now. Also we have done several shows all around Europe. Kryth has been busy with his own projects during these months ,if i remember correctly MUSTA KAPPELI should release or has already released their latest album. Kryth is also involved with ANAL BLASPHEMY, so keep your eyes and ears open, 'cus they'll be releasing a new album.

9.The band started in 2000, do you feel black metal has changed for the better or the worse since then?

Necron: All a matter of opinion. How i feel is that there is too much hype on NSBM. Black metal is SATAN ! It has nothing to do with political views or any related. But back into your question, i wouldn't say that it has gone worse, it is good that the flame is kept alive but still there is too many bands that should not exist.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Necron: Hard to say. We do what we want. We don't like to limit our music.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Necron: There isn't any specific musical styles where we get our influences. Influence can come from anything basically. I personally listen to all kinds of music, boring to limit yourself into something specific. But my roots are in Black Metal. I guess i'm getting old since almost everything what i listen is recorded in the nineties and i get the kicks from it. Not that many bands has made an impact on me.

12.How would you describe your views on Satanism?

Necron: For me this is a very personal thing. I don't want to share my views on that matter.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Necron: Thank you for the interview. Listen to the "Vuohen Siunaus", love it or hate it.

Korgunthurus/Vuohen Siunaus/Woodcut Records/2016 CD Review

Korgonthurus  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  satanic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Vuohen  Siunaus"  which  was  released  by  Woodcut  Records.

A  very  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  black  metal  direction t hat  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  along  with  some  high  pitched  screams  while  you  can  also  hear  a  great  amount  of  morbid  sounding  melodies  throughout t he  recording  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  chaotic  fashion.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  that  genre  also  being  an  influence  on  some  of  the  riffing  and  the  guitar  leads  also  bring  in a   decent  amount  of  melody  at  times  while  the  music  builds  mostly  on  a  Finnish  black  metal  style  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  very long  and  epic  in  length  and  a  couple  of  tracks  also  shows  a  small amount  of  acoustic  guitars  being  mixed  in  with  some  of  the  heavy  riffing  and  on  some  songs  the  screams  bring  in  more  of  a  depressive  tone.

Korgonthurus  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  true  to  the  raw  Finnish  tradition  of  the  genre  while  also  standing  out  a  little  bit  by  mixing  in  death  metal  influences  on  some  of  the  tracks,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  yet  heavy  at  the  same  time  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  Satanism  and  Occultism  themes.

In  my  opinion  Korgonthurus  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  satanic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kaaos"  "Inho"  and  "L.U.X".  8  out  of  10.
