Hissing/Hypervirulence Architecture/Profound Lore Records/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Seattle,  Washington's  Hissing  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  dissonant  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Hypervirulence  Architecture"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  Profound  Lore  Records.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  a  few  seconds  later.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  brutal  sounding  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  while  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording   and  dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  dissonant  sounding  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  touches  of  avant  garde  noise  also  being  utilized  briefly.

  When tremolo  picking  is  added  into  some  of  the  faster  riffing  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  technical  moments  as  well  as  one  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  atmospheric  sounding  drones  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  abstract  themes,  suffering  and  existentialism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Hissing  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dissonant  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Cells  Of  Nonbeing"  "Operant  Extinction"  and  "Meltdown".  8  out  of  10.

Hissing/Burning Door/Utech Records/2019 EP Review

  Seattle,  Washington's  Hissing  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  into  more  of  a  mixture  of  noise,  experimental,  black,  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  ep  "Burning  Door"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Utech  Records.

  A  drone  orientated  intro  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  ambient  style  soundscapes  as  well  as  introducing  elements  of  experimental  and  noise  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music.  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  some  death  metal  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  while  the  music  also  adds  in  some  underground  industrial  elements  at  times.  When  clean  playing  is  utilized  it  is  also  done  in  more  of  an  avant  garde  style  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  at  times.

  all  of  the  songs  sound  each  other  and  you  can  also  hear  an  influences  of  doom  metal  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  music  and  as  the  ep  closes  a  brief  use  of  fast  playing  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard..  The  production  sounds  very  dark, r aw  and  lo-fi  while  the  lyrics  cover  abstract  themes,  suffering  and  existentialism.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Hissing  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental,  noise,  black,  doom  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out t his  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Burning  Door"  and  "Cataphasia".  8  out  of  10.

Hissing/Permanent Destitution/Profound Lore Records/2018 CD Review

  Seattle,  Washington's  Hissing  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  their  mixture  of  black,  death  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Permanent  Destitution"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Profound  Lore  Records.

  Avant  garde  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast,  brutal  and  dissonant  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  the  tremolo  picking  also  giving  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  vocals  also  bringing  in  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls.

  Half  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  bringing  in  elements  of  doom  metal  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  harsh  noises  can  also  be  heard  and  one  track  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts.

  On  this  recording  Hissing  takes  their  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  death  metal  into  more  of  a  dissonant  direction  while  also  mixing  in  elements  of  harsh  noise,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  abstract,  suffering  and  existentialism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Hissing  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dissonant  black/death  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Backwards  Descent"  and  "Perdurance".  8  out  of  10.

Hissing/Self Titled/Southern Lord/2016 EP Review

  Hissing  are  a  band  from  Seattle,  Washington  that  recently  had  an  ep  reviewed  in  this  zine  and  plays  a mixture  of  black,  death  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  another  self  titled  ep  from  them  which  was  released  by  Southern  Lord.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  bestial  death  metal  growls  while  the  slower  sections  are  very  heavily  influenced  by  doom metal  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in a  great  amount  of  morbid  sounding  melodies  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  elements  of  sludge  and  the  music  is  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats can  be  heard  and  the  songs  also  bring  in a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  songs  also b ring  in  elements  of  war  metal  and  both  of  the  songs  stick  to  a  very  heavy  sound  without  ever  having  a  soft  or  weak  moment.

  Hissing  creates  another  recording  that  mixes  black,  doom  and  death  together  while  also  adding  in  more  bestial  moments  this  time  around,  the  production  sounds  very  dark,  heavy  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  agoraphobia,  urban  decay  and  incarceration.

 In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Hissing  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black, death  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  yuo  should c heck  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Husk".  8  out  of  10.

Hissing/Self Titled/Disorder Records/2016 EP Review

  Hissing  are  a  band from  Seattle,  Washington  that  plays  black  metal  with  elements  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2016  ep  which  was  released  by  Disorder  Records.

  Distorted  amp  noises  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  drum  beats  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  doom  metal  direction  while  also  adding  in  old school  death  metal  melodies  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  it  goes  into  more  of  a  raw  style  of  the  genre.

  Blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  in  the  faster  sections  of  the  music  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  they  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  death  metal  growls  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  while  some  modern  elements  are  also  added  into  the  songs.

  Hissing  plays  a  musical  style  that  mixes  the  darkest  styles  of  90's  black,  doom  and  death  metal  together  with  some  more  modern  influences  to  create  a  style  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Hissing  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  doom and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Callow  Congress"  and  "Granero's  Eye".  8  out  of  10.
