Grave Desecrator/Immundissime Spiritus/Caverna de Sangue Productions/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Grave  Desecrator  are  a  band  from  Brazil  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  war,  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Immundissime  Spiritus"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Caverna  de  Sangue  Productions.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  evil  sounding  melodies.  When  the  music  speeds  up a   lot  of  tremolo  picking,  blast  beats  and  war  metal  elements  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Vocals are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  songs  also adding  in  a  great  amount  of  old  school  influences.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style.

   All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  album  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  spoken  word  parts  also  giving  the  recording  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  when  they  are utilized,  synths  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  they  also  bring  in  a  G.G  Allin  cover.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Necromancy,  Blasphemy,  Death  and  Darkness  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Grave  Desecrator  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  war,  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Necromanitical  Hex"  "Finis  Hominis"  "Occult  Bewitchment"  and  "Rapists  From  The  Cross".  8 out  of  10.

Grave Desecrator Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Necrogoat – Hi! We’ve been busy with our particular lifes and problems since we’ve returned from
the last European tour, during March/April this year. Due a lot of these problems, we’ll have to cancel
some stuffs and projects for some time. But we have a split 7ep alongside Augrimmer from Germany
scheduled since a long ago, and then we’ll work on this for still this year. Some other agreements
concerning releases will go to next year probably. We also need to start to work on our next full-
length, since we plan to release it for early 2013 by Pulverised rec. So, that’s another thing we need
to take care of our agenda.

2. I have noticed that when I listened to the compilation the beginning songs had a more straight
forward black metal sound and the later tracks are more in the black/death vein, what was the
decision behind progressing more into the musical style that you have nowadays?

“Deathspells Rising” is a kind of compilation to celebrate the 10 years since we’ve released our first

and unique demo tape “Demo 01” from 2001. We faced too many problems and chaotic situations
during all this time, so I think it’s a worth release for the band. The first tracks are probably from this
same demo, and yes, it´s a bit different from what we’re doing nowadays. It sounds most like grim
and straight Black Metal from 90´s, but you can for sure listen to some thrashy and mid-paced riffs
which are more common to old Thrash and even Heavy Metal soundings. The former vocalist tried
to fucking sound like a reminiscent of the Scandinavian screaming voices, and particularly I used to
hate it. Nothing against the old BM from Norway or Sweden (they were great!!), but that wasn’t what
we (Me and the other founder member Butcherazor) were trying to sounds like. So, after the first 7ep,
we had a discussion and this first vocalist F. Mordor was fired off! I think since the “Culf of Warfare
and Darkness” 7ep, even if it was recorded with this same old vocalist, we’re really sounding the way
GD really needed to. So that’s why the difference, but we’re not ashamed of what we did in the past.
But we learnt with our mistakes in order to create something more relevant in our eyes.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band brings out in the music?

We used to deal to warlike and destructive topics, since “war” was really interesting for us in the
beginning. A kind of imaginary satanic war, I mean. Lately, we started to express a kind of relation
to our personal views toward darkness, lust and the decadence of life. Some of our lyrics were
straighter in your face, and some were more deeply in the shadowed side of humans. A touch from
the old lyrics from the first Black and Death Metal bands were respected in our work, since we
worship this natural and simple ways to write.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

A nodding to some great bands that we fucking like a lot till now, like Mutilator(old), Blasphemy,
Beherit, Sarcófago, Sepultura(old) and so on…Nothing special but hellish and evil!

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe
your stage performance?

We did some great gigs. We liked some gigs like in Oslo (Norway), Cuiabá (Mato-Grosso state,
Brasil), London 2010 (Live Evil festival), Slovenia 2012 and some others I can’t remind now. We like
to be frenetic and aggressive alive! We are unfriendly and sweaty faces, mockering and Metal to the
bone. But we had some bad experiences and not so inspiring nights as well. But luckily these were
exceptions to the rule. Most of the times, we don’t have the stage situation as we’d like to, including
smoke, lights, skulls etc..But as soon as we get more money, we’ll increase our rituals with more and
more specific and personal shits! We already have some news about it for our next gigs. Get ready!

6. Do you have any touring plans for the future?

Maybe next year again in Europe, but with fewer dates. We’ll try to reach USA, some countries in
South America and some states in the northern part of Brazil.

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

I think it has been very good, but we’d not be satisfied if we were not doing it in the way that we want
to, even if could disappoint some. But that’s the way we drive our juggernaut! We fucking love being
hailed by the others, but we first like to do what we think it’s good for us!

8. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases and when can we expect
new material?

We’re trying to develop a kind of Hydra in our music. Reflecting some of our few experience, but
regarding the primal aspects we were formed in. The sound will keep savage, evil and defiant, but a
presence of a new drummer and some new circumstances will probably affect us anyway. For sure in
a positive way. The structures need some organic pillars to keep working in the right direction, and
that’s what we’re looking for. It’s not easy but worth to expand ourselves. Pulverised rec. is our new
label and probably the next album will be released early 2013 as I said before.

9. What are some of the more obscure bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and
also what are you listening to nowadays?

The most obscure albums for me were the first ones that drove me to a shivered path, to hit the
darkness itself. I could tell you that Slayer´s Show no Mercy, Possessed´s Seven Churces and
Sepultura´s Morbid Visions were the three-cornered that made me to overcome the rules of a catholic
society that I live in. Nowadays I listen to Metal at all ( come on, not faggot Metalcore, and shit
similar to Trivium or the likes), also old Rock and Roll from the 70´s, some cool Hardcore, Grind,
old Punk and so on. Also ritualistic music like Jacula is amazing! I love music that makes demons
rise, rebellion and outraged feelings. If you’re referring into Metal I like from nowadays lots like
Diocletian, Witchrist, Vulturine, Whipstriker, Necros Christos, Augrimmer, Destruktor, Nocturnal
Graves, Communion, Ejecutor and a lot more. Butcherazor (voices/guitars) prefer to listen to old
stuffs mostly (Sarcofago, Mercyful Fate, Sodom etc..) but he liked a lot of Ghost, Slaughtbath and
few other newer bands. Our drummer Slaughterer loves fucking grindcore, hardcore and aggressive
Thrash/Death/Black Metal. He even plays at some Crust and Punk/Hardcore bands in our city! Black
Sin and Damnation (Guitars) loves fucking Slayer, Judas Priest, Iron and for new bands, he liked of
some of the bands I quoted before.

10. How would you describe your views on Satanism and Occultism?

A choice of communion to my own rules, devotion and experiences! I see Hell not like the Christians
do! I see it in a powerful way and a tool to express rebellion and mighty. It’s not a kind of egocentric
individualism, and it’s not the final answer for it. It’s formless and hard to describe. Sometimes
you need to choose to follow the reason or that isn’t touchable or comprehensible. I most feel
the evilness around, the smell of unclean souls and decadence. Occultism connects you to the
conviction of the unnatural fields. It’s a matter of experiences and it’s not that easy.

11. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Naked women, drinks and night. Ok some cool books, mags/zines and movies. But I´m much more
interested in music. I like a lot of art at all. Drawings, paintings etc.. I’m speaking only by myself.

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

Grave Desecrator/Deathspells Reign/Metalhit.com/2012 CD Compilation Review

  Grave  Desecrator   are  a  band  from  Brazil  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  primitive  form  of  satanic  black  metal  on  the  studio  tracks  that  utilizes  some  influences  from  death, war  and  thrash  metal  which  are  utilized  more  on  the  live  tracks   and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  compilation  album  "Deathspells  Reign"  which  was  released  by  Metalhit.com.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the  music,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  tone  with  primitive  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sounding  with  a  good  amount  of  dark  melodies,  thrash,  war  and  death  metal  influences  being  thrown  into  the  riffing  which  are  used  more  on  the  live  tracks,  while  the  lead  guitars  which  are  utilized  on  the  live  tracks  are  very  chaotic  and  raw  sounding  black/death  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads  with  some  melody.

  Vocals are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  on  the  studio  tracks  with  some  deep  demonic  black/death  metal  growls  which  are  utilized  even  more  on  the  live  tracks  being  thrown  into  the  music  at  times,  while the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Occultism,  Darkness  and  Anti  Christian  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  while  not  taking  away  from  the  raw  and  primitive  nature  of  the  music  while  you  can  still  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording,  in  addition  there  are  a  great  amount  of  live  tracks  towards  the  end  of  the  album  which  have  a  more  raw  and  primitive  sound.

  In  my  opinion  Grave  Desecrator  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  raw  and  primitive  war,  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  style  of  music,  you should  check  this  band  out.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Faces  Of  Apocalyptic  Fire"  "Holocaust"  "Christ's  Blood"  and  "Stared  To  Hell".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
