Horn/Apokalyps 1618/Northern Silence Productions/2026 Full Length Review

  Germany's    Horn  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  folk  influenced  form  of  pagan  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  album  "Apocalyps  1618"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Northern  Silence  Productions.

  Atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  playing  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  one  song  also  introducing  stringed  instruments  and  folk  music  elements  onto  the  recording.

 Pagan  style  shouts  are  utilized  at  times  along  with  some clear  singing  also  being  added  on  a  couple  of  tracks  and  some  of  the  songs  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  as  well  as  some  of  the  riffing  also  adding  in  dissonant  touches,  spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  German,  Swedish,  Norwegian  and  English  and  cover  folklore  discovered  by  the  Grim  Brothers  and  historical  events  from  the  middle  ages.   

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  form  Horn  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  folk  influenced  pagan  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDD  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Die  Ahren  gleich  als  mit  dem  Huf"  "Barhout"  and  "At  Our  Bleakest".  8  out  of  10.

Horn/Daudswiärk/Northern Silence Productions/2024 Full Length Review

 

  Germany's  solo  project  Horn  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  nature  orientated  and  folk  influenced  form  of  pagan  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  a  2024  album  "Daudswiärk"  which  will  be  released  in  may  by  Northern  Silence  Productions.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.  When  synths  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  an  atmospheric  and  dystopian  feeling  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal   screams  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.

 Elements  of  folk  music  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album  along  with  one  song  also  introducing  clear  pagan  vocals  into  the  music  as  well  as  one  of  the  tracks  also  being  long  and  epic  in  length,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  rural  life  in  Westphalia  around  the  turn  of  the  19th  to  20th  centuries.     

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Horn  and  if  you  are  a f an  of  folk  influenced  pagan  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Braud"  "Broth"  and  "Landrake".  8  out  of  10.

Horn/20 Jahre/Northern Silence Productions/2023 Compilation Review

 

  Germany's  solo  project  Horn  has  returned  with  a  new  collection  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  melodic  style  of  pagan  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  compilation  album  "20  Jahre"  which  will  be  released  in  may  by  Northern  Silence  Productions.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  compilation  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  musical  direction.  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  solos  and  leads  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  some  synths  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  synths.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  compilation  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  one  song  also  introduces  clear  pagan  vocals  into  the  music.

  Throughout  the  compilation  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  clean  playing  also  making  a  return  on  one  of  the  later  tracks  as  well  as  some  acoustic  guitars  and  cello's  also  being  utilized  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of   German  and  English  and  cover  nature,  history,  folklore,  illness  and  mankind  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Horn  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  melodic  pagan  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Fading  Landscape's  Glory"  and  "The  Grandest  of  All  Blades".  8  out  of  10.

Horn/Verzet/2022 CD Review

 

  Germany's  solo  project  Horn  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  folk  influenced  and  nature  orientated  form  of  pagan  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2022  album  "Verzet"  which  will  be  released  in  May.

   A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  sounding  black  metal  screams.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  songs  also  mixing  in  a  lot  of  folk  instruments  and  clean  pagan  vocals  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  album.

  

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats.  Throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  tremolo  picking  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  when  they  are  utilized.

  

  A  Couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  music  also  capturing  a  very  medieval  atmosphere  at  times.  Cello's  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style,  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  one  song  is  also  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  rebellion,  the  state  of  an  inebriated  mind  and  the  importance  of  perseverance  and  principles.

  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Horn  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  folk  influenced  pagan  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Alpenrekorder"  "A  Hill  To  Die  On"  and  "Verzet".  8  out  of  10.

Horn/Mohngang/Iron Bonehead Productions/2020 CD Review

  Horn  are  a  solo  project  from  Sweden  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  medieval  and  atmospheric  form  of  pagan  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Mohngang"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Iron  Bonehead  Productions.

  Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  stringed  instruments  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  clean  pagan  vocals.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  a  couple  of  tracks  being  long  and  epic  in  length.  Elements  of  medieval  folk  music  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  On  some  of  the  tracks  the  vocals  also  adapt  to  a  more  deep  yet  aggressive  style  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  adding  in  some  cello,  dulcimer  and  trumpets  which  also  add  more  to  the  diversity  the  album  produces

     Some  songs  also  showing  an  influence  of  classical  music,  as  the  album  progresses  an  a  couple  of  instrumentals are  added  onto  the  recording  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  Nature,  World  War  1,  the  concept  of  autonomy/heteronomy,  individualism,  culinary  aspects  and  maritime  matters.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Horn  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  epic,  atmospheric,  medieval  and  pagan  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Satt  Scheint  der  Sud  der Tat"  "Handkreis  und  Chor"  and  "Ødegård  und  Pendelschlag".  8/5  out  of  10.

  Horn  are  a  solo  project  from  Germany  that  plays a  very  nature  orientated  from  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2018  ep  "Retrograd"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Iron  Bonehead  Productions.

  Shamanistic  style  drumming  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  brief  use  of  folk  instruments  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  medieval  feeling  as  well  as  mixing  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Horn  plays  a  style  of  pagan  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  nature  orientated  while  also  mixing  in  elements  of  folk  music  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  Paganism,  Nature<  Natural  Disasters,  Illness  and Mankind  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Horn  are  a  very  great  sounding  nature  orientated  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Retrograd"  and  "De  Einder".  8  out  of  10.
