Skaphe/Skáphe³/Mystiskaos/Iron Bonehead Productions/Vanagandr/2020 Full Length Review

 

  Skaphe  are  an  international  band  with  members  from  Iceland  and  the  United  States  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  depressive,  dissonant  and  psychedelic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Skáphe³"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Mystiskaos,  Iron  Bonehead  Productions  and  Vanagandr.

  A  very  dark  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  done  in  mostly  a  grim  yet  deep  black  metal  style  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  dissonant  sounding  melodies.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dissonant  style  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  psychedelic  moments.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  depressive  sounding  along  with  some  brief  interludes  also  being  utilized  before  a  few  songs  which  also  introduces  clean  singing  onto  the  recording  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  synths.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the lyrics  cover  desolation  and  abandonment  themes.     

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Skaphe  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dissonant,  psychedelic  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Lowest  Abyss"  "The  Shrill  Cracks  And  Mona"  and  "Rebirth  Synthesis"  8  out  of  10.

Skaphe/Self Titled/Fallen Empire Records/2014 EP Review

  Skaphe  are  a  band  from  the  United  States  that  plays  an  asphyxiating  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2014  ep  which  was  released  by  Fallen  Empire  Records.

  A  very  slow,  dark  and  raw  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  mixture  of  growls  and  screams  as  well  as  having  a  darkened  atmosphere  in  the  background  which  also  has  an  ambient  feeling  to  it  and  then  the  music  adds  in  fast  parts  and  blast  beats  with  the  more  atmospheric  side  of  their  sound.

  A  great  amount  of  dark  and  distorted  melodies  can  be  heard  in  a  lot  of  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  powerful  bass  lines  and  a  mixture  of  both  clean  and  heavy  parts  as  well  as  the  music  alternating  between  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  sections  and  on  some  of  the  later  songs  the  ambient  elements  having  a  more  powerful  presence  on  the  recording  while  the  music  sticks  to  mostly  a  heavier  direction.

  3/4  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  some  drones  being utilized  at  times  and  some  of  the  slower  sections  have  a  funeral  doom  metal  feeling  to  it  as  well  as  some  of  the  later  tracks  have  vocals  that  utilize  more  depressive  and  suicidal  elements  in  the  vocals  and  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  amount  of  variety  in  the  riffing  throughout  the  recording  and  the  last  track  is  an  ambient  drone  instrumental  piece.

  Skaphe  creates  their  own  form  of  black  metal  on  this  ep  with  the  music  showing  a  more  asphyxiating  approach  to  this  genre  as  well  as  retaining  a  grim,  dark  and  depressive  edge  in  their  musical  style,  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  depressive  and  melancholic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Skaphe  are  a  very  great  sounding  asphyxiating  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  looking  for  something  that is  true  to  this  genre  but  a  little bit  different,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Every  Soul  Entombed"  and  "The  Obelisk  Gleam".  8  out  of  10.
