Imperial Triumphant/Vile Luxury/Gilead Media/2018 CD Review

  New  York's  Imperial  Triumphant  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  experimental  and  progressive  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Vile  Luxury"  which  was  released  by  Gilead  Media.

  Avant  garde  jazz  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  faster  and  technical  direction  which  also  introduces  blast  beats  onto  the  recording  while  the  vocals  bring  in  a  mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams  along  with  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  music  getting  very  experimental  and  progressive  at  times  as  well  as  some  dissonant  structures  and  one  track  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  choir  vocals.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  songs  also  mix  the  avant  garde  elements  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  some  tracks  also  bringing  clean  guitars  onto  the  recording  and  as  the  album  progresses  elements  of  noise  are  added  into  the  music  and  they  also  bring  in  an  instrumental  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  operatic  female  vocals.

  On  this  recording  Imperial  Triumphant  expand  on  their  avant  garde  and  experimental  style  of  black  metal  by  taking  it  into  new  directions  and  also  bringing  in  elements  of  death  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover futurism,  philosophy  and  decay  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Imperial  Triumphant  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  avant  garde  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Swarming  Opulance"  "Chernobyl  Blues"  and  "The  Filth".  8  out  of  10.

Imperial Triumphant/Inceste/Redefining Darkness Records/2016 EP Review

  New  York's  Imperial  Triumphant  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  continues  the  experimental  black  metal  sound  of  previous  recordings  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  ep  "Inceste"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Redefining  Darkness  Records.

  Atmospheric  sounds  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  avant  garde  and  experimental  elements  which  are  done  with  some  old  fashioned  instruments  and  after  awhile  spoken  word  samples  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  sound  while  also  remaining  experimental.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful sound  to them  and  the  vocals  use  both  black  metal;  screams  and  death  metal  growls  while  the  songs  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  progressive  structures  as  well  as  adding  clean  playing  into  some  parts  of  the  tracks  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  songs  also  bring  in a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Imperial  Triumphant  creates  another  recording  that  takes  their  black  metal  roots  of  earlier  recordings  while  also  expanding  on  the  death  metal  elements  as  well  as  getting  more  experimental  and  progressive  with  this  newer  release  as  well  as  picking  up  where  they  left  off  on  their  last  full  length,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  works  of  Marquis  De  Sade.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Imperial  Triumphant  and  if  you  are  a fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kaleidoscope  Orgies"  and  "Breath  Of  Innocence".  8  out  of  10.

Imperial Triumphant/Abyssal Gods/Aural Music/2015 CD Review

  Imperial  Triumphant  are  a  band  from  New  York  that h as  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays an  experimental  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Abyssal  Gods"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Aural  Music.

  A  very  fast,  raw  and  avant  garde  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  before  adding  in  grim  and  high  pitched  screams  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  distorted  yet  experimental  melodies  along  with  a  touch  of  modern  classical  music  being added  into  the  songs  at  times.

  At  time s the  vocals  can  be  very  guttural  giving  the  music  some  bestial  black  metal  traces  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  some  of  the  tracks  also  have  a  very  ritualistic  feeling  to  them  and  as  the  album  progresses  some  of  the  tracks  also  bring  in  some  elements  of  death  metal.

  As the  album  progresses  a  brief  song  with  choirs  is  added  onto  the  recording  while  a  couple  of  tracks  are  instrumental  avant  garde  classical  pieces   and  some  of  the  later  songs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars  along  with  the  heavier  sections  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  there  are  also  a  few  songs  that  are  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Imperial  Triumphant  creates  a  black  metal  album  that  is  very  avant  garde  and  experimental  sounding  as  well  as  being  very  original  and  this  album  would  take  an  average  person  awhile  to  get use  to  and  this  is  the  type  of  album  that  needs  repeated  listens  to  be  fully  understood,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  occult  and  anti  catholic/christian  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Imperial  Triumphant  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  avant  garde  and  experimental  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Abyssal  Gods"  "Opposing  Holiness"  "Twins"  and  "Black  Psychedelia".  8  out  of  10.

Imperial Triumphant/Goliath/Vatican Records/2013 EP Review

  Imperial  Triumphant  are  a  band  from  New  York  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical  style  i  would  describe  on  this  recording  as  being  modern  and  avant  garde  form  black  metal   and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  ep  "Goliath"  which  was  released  by  Vatican  Records.

  "Sodom'  begins  with  some sound  effects  and  orchestra  sounds  which  leads  to some  deep  growls  and  then  some  guitar  leads,  bass  guitars  and  drums  start  kicking  in  along  with  some  black  metal  screams  which  then  starts  adding  in  heavier  guitar riffs  which  also  get  fast  in  certain  sections  of  the  song  and  after  awhile  more  guitar  leads  are  being  utilized  as  well  as  some  avant  garde  elements.

  "Gomorrah"  begins  with  some  avant  garde  black  metal  guitar  riffs,  powerful  bass  guitars  and  drums  and  then  goes  into  a  more  fast  direction  and  adds  in  some  blast  beats  and  blackened  metal  vocals  and  then  going  for  a  more  mid  paced  approach  but  returning  to  fast  and  brutal  in  certain parts  of  the  song  as  well  as  adding  in  more  avant  garde  elements  and  the  song  closes  with  some  orchestra  elements.

  Song  lyrics  cover  the  old  testament  story  of  Sodom  and  Gomorrah,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  dark  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  with  both  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Imperial  Triumphant  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  avant  garde  black  metal,  you should  check out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Sodom".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Imperial Triumphant Interview

> 1. Can you give us a brief history of the band?
>
Phlegethon: We came to conception in the year 2005 A.D. in the EmpireState, New York City. I am the founding member. After a year of writing music we became a performing outfit with the addition of bassist Naagryl and drummer Maelstrom. Our company was made whole with the final member joining, Amarok on cello. Then in the winter of 2008 they parted with Maelstrom and hired the mighty Aleksandr to man the skins. From 2007-recent we've been playing local clubs around the city and recorded songs for our debut album.>

2. How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you> before?
>
Naagryl: Imperial Triumphant plays viking war metal with a thrash edge, and we mix our dynamics from a brutal blasting assault to epic melody. We choose to create a very grim and medieval atmosphere.>

3. Were did you come up with the idea for the band name?
>
P: I was born in raised in New York City. The Empire State. The greatest city in the world. I was born into a family of nobility. So naturally I have the desire to conquer and see the world as my throne.Also we are from the USA which has a history rich in imperialism.Imperial Triumphant is the perfect name for us because it reflects our music exactly as it sounds. Two moods. Imperial aggressive speed and triumphant melodic glory.

4. Have you received any label interest yet?

>
N: I've been working to put together a comprehensive promotional kit,which is almost complete. We've received good criticisms from a few,and we're slowly getting the word out more and more. With all the virgin blood we spill for Odin, a contract doesn't seem far off.

5. What are some of the best shows that you have played so far?
>
N: My favorite show we've played was our last one, the first round of a battle of the bands at Sullivan Hall in NYC. It was our first with Aleksandr behind the kit and we absolutely murdered our set. Our armor was brutal as fuck and our corpse paint was utterly grotesque. I also vomited acid blood all over the audience and they fucking drank it all. The judge had no choice but to let us conquer.
P: My favorite gig was a local school show we did. Most of theaudience was made up of little kids. All the other bands were playing guns and roses acoustic covers  and then we came onstage in full armor and corpse paint. I torn up a bible and then we played our set whil eall these little kids were crying.

6. How would you describe the musical progress over the years?
>
P: It only gets stronger. We're progressively getting more darker and technical. We have been and always will be pushing for faster speeds.I really like the idea of black metal with guitar solos because there isn't much of that. Lately Naargryl writes a lot of melodic stuff while I take care of the darker more atonal riffs. I'm currently enrolled in a music academy where I am learning so much and when we get the money to record another album it will be the most epic work.

7. How would you describe the lyrical content of the music?
>
P: My lyrics reflect my favorite parts of ancient medieval history and mythology. We are skalds who spin tales of war and combat. A lot of songs have to do with either vikings, epic battles, raping nuns and/or raiding monasteries.

8. What are your main influences music wise or non music wise?
>
P: Empiricism, ancient and medieval history and mythology.
N: Frost covered landscapes and pagan tradition, heathenism and the brotherhood of northern blood.

9. What are you listening to nowadays and what are some good bands or
> releases that you would recommend?

>
P: Sturmkaiser, Frostmoon, Justice, Nile, Bathory and Immortal(forever), Hate Forest.
N: Ulver, Branikald, Kroda, Bloodrain, Bethlehem, and Windir

10. Are there any plans for a tour?
>
P: We plan to tour in the next summer provided the gods give us their blessings.

11. What rule does the Norse Gods play in the band's music and life?
>
N: The gods of the Northern Pantheon are very near to us and have helped us greatly as a band in exchange for our undying loyalty. We give praise and sacrifice unto them as it seems fit, and they and the Norns have granted us great fortune. We invoke them before every show or important moment, and they guide us with omens and grace us with victory

12. Are there any good books or films that you would recommend?
>
N: We read the traditional sagas and eddas for inspiration andstrength before battle. Our favorites are the Heimskringla and theVolsung Saga. My favorite films are Dead Alive, The Big Lebowski andThis is Spinal Tap.

13. How would you compare the metal scene in New York to other states?
>
N: Metal in New York is a diverse thing. There are a lot of scene wigger pussy slamcore bands like everywhere else, but there is also the New York Death Militia, which is very powerful in the underground here. Since we're in the city, we have a lot of opportunities to play shows at great venues, but there's a great lack of dedicated black metal warriors like ourselves.

Imperial Triumphant -Soundclick MP3's Review

 Imperial Triumphant are a band from New York and I would describe their music as Viking Black Metal with a thrash and death metal edge.

Drums incorporate many different elements from slow parts to some really fast blast beats mixed with some epic viking march type beats, while the bass playing is mostly rhythms with a dark tone that follow the riffs that come out of the guitars and drums without copying them.

Rhythm guitars utilize a lot of different influences from the different sub genres but are mostly in the vein of black metal and you can hear some palm muted riffs mixed with alot of fast parts, while the lead guitars contain a lot of melody and utilize a lot of distortion.

Vocals are mostly in the grim style with a lot of low pitched black metal screams mixed in with some occasional clean singing as well as some death metal growls, while the keyboards when they are utilized contain a very epic feel and there was a violin utilized on one song that brought back memories of an ancient dark past.

Production on these MP3's remind me of the sound you would hear off demo cassettes in the 90's and it gives the music a very raw edge. as for the song titles they are mostly about vikings and war with a sense of humor at times with some names such as Retarded Vikings.

In my opinion this is a good band and they seem to bring a lot of old school influences into modern day Black Metal and none of the songs sound the same. I would recommend downloading some MP3's as well as buying whatever demo or album this band puts out.  RECOMMENDED.
