Kyy/Beyond Flesh-Beyond Matter/Morbid Chapel Records/2020 Cassette Re-Issue Review

  Kyy  are  a  band  from  Finland  that h as  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very    satanic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Beyond  Flesh-Beyond  Matter"  which  was  re-issued  on  cassette  in  2020  by  Morbid  Chapel  Records.

  A very  dark  and  ritualistic  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  deeper  and  angrier  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style.

  Melodies  are  also  added  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  clean  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  most  of  the  music  also  add  in  more  of  a  modern  style  which  also  remains  true  to  the  old  school  tradition.  During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  one  track  also  bringing  in  a  brief  use  of  ritualistic  throat  singing.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Luciferian,  Left  Hand  Path  and  Anti  Caballa  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Kyy  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Legio  Serpenti"  "Bloodline  Of  Edom"  "Destroying  Tiphareth"  and  "The  Narrow  Gates  Of  Apoleia".  8  out  of  10.

Djevelkult/Kyy/Nihil Kaos/Kult Of Kaos Serpent/Saturnal/2018 3 Way Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  3  way  split  album  between  Norway's  Djevelkult,  Finland's  Kyy  and  Turkey's  Nihil  Kaos  called  "Kult  of  Kaos  Serpent"  which  will  be  released  on  December  8th  by  Saturnal  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Djevelkult  who  return  with  their  old  school  style  of  satanic  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  fast  and  raw  sound  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  guitar  leads  being  done  in  a  very  dark  and  melodic  style  and  the  music  is  heavily  rooted  in  the  Nordic  style.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  their  side  of  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  melody  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  riffing,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  Norwegian  and  English  and  cover  death,  darkness,  and  blasphemy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Djevelkult  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Life  Devoid".

  Next  up  is  Kyy  who  return  with  their  satanic  style  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy sound  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  melody.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  their  side  of  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  demonic  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  the  guitar  leads  being  done  in  a  very  raw  and  melodic  style  and  after  awhile t he  vocals  start  adding  in  angry  shouts,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism  and  Occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Kyy  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Ingress_Womb  of  Lilith".

  Closing  the  split  is  Nihil  Kaos  who  return  with  their  satanic  style  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  fast  and  raw  sound  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  deep  black  metal  screams  which  get  more  high  pitched  at  times  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  their  side  of  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  guitar  leads  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  chaotic  style  along  with  the  riffs  also  bringing  in a   decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  as  well  as  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  second  track  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  towards  the  end  a  small  amount  fo  acoustic  gutiars  can  also  be  heard,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Chaos-Gnostic  Satanism,  Death  and  End  Of  Life  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Nihil  Kaos  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Claws  Of  The  Tempter".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  satanic  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Kyy Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Kyy: We have known each other with some of the band members for a long time. We share same ideologies and also have similar musical taste. After having some conversations on what we really would like to do, we decided to found Kyy around the beginning 2013.  

2.In August you have an ep coming out, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

Kyy:  The musical sound is like a legless, armless& limbless hunter that strikes suddenly without warning to its prey and its venom goes straight to your soul.


3.The band has been around since 2013 but waited 2 years to release any music, can you tell us a little bit more about the first couple of years?

Kyy: We had the songs ready as demo versions back in 2013 which are going to be on debut EP. Before recording a decent release, we decided to gather a full line-up and rehearse the songs and become a real band. After finding a second guitarist and a bass guitarist, we decided to record the EP. 

4.Your lyrics cover Satanism and Left Hand Path themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these subjects?

Kyy: With all respect to to your question, Satanism and Left Hand Path are more than interest for us.

5.I know that the bands name means 'viper' in Finnish, how does this name fit in with the musical style you play?

Kyy: If you look at different civizilations all over the world, snakes have always been symbolically and literally important in their cultures and folklore. I would like people to use their imagination and have their own understanding of this when they listen to our releases and read our lyrics. 

6.Your have your first live show coming up in August, what should fans expect once you hit the stage?

Kyy: They will be able to witness and feel our intense energy. 

7.The ep is going to be released by Saturnal Records, how did you get in contact with this label?

Kyy: We have known people from the label for some years and when we were ready with the mastering of the EP, we decided to send it straight to Saturnal Records. The reaction was very satisfactory and they offered a good deal for the EP. But most important thing for us was to work with individuals who share same ideologies.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

Kyy: So far, so good. To be honest, we are very satisfied with our music. Of course what other people think also count but it is very crucial to underline that we are playing the music we love, that’s more important than anything else for us.

9.Are any of the band members also involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?

Kyy: There are band members who are involved in different black / death metal bands from Finland. But with all respect to your question, we do not see it relevant to talk about our other bands for the time being.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Kyy: We are strictly committed to the roots and doctrine of Black Metal. This will continue In the future.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Kyy:  Since our young ages everyone in the band has been fed with Black Metal scene’s great years of of 80s and 90s. They still have great influence on our music and we still listen to them. Additionally, we follow the bands that have a mission or purpose, ambition and meaning nowadays.

Kyy/Travesty Of Light/Saturnal Records/2015 EP Rebiew

  Kyy  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  very  raw,  old  school  and  satanic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  ep  "Travesty  Of  Light"  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Saturnal  Records.

  Drum beats  along  with  some  heavy,  and  melodic  guitar  riffs  start  off  the  ep  along  with  an  atmospheric  background  and  grim  black  metal  screams and  the  vocals  also get  very  deep  at  times along  with  a  few  angry  shouts  and  spoken  word  parts  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  in  a  melodic musical  direction.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  it  goes  for  more  of  an  early  90's  Nordic  black  metal  style  along  with a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  music  at  times  also  adds  in  a  touch  of rock'n'roll  and  punk  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow, mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  remaining  true  to  a  second  wave  style  of  the  genre  and  they  also  bring  in  a  brief  use  of  melodic  chants  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing.

  Kyy  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  old  school  sounding  in  the  second  wave  Nordic  and  Finnish  traditions  and  also  avoids  sounding  modern, the  production  sounds  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism  and  Left  Hand  Path  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Kyy  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw,  old  school  and  satanic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Death  -  The  great  Liberator"  and  "Travesty  Of  Light".  8  out  of  10.
