Skogen/Skuggoma Kallar/Nordvis/2018 CD Review

  Sweden's  Skogen  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  into  more  of  a  folk  inspired  form  of  atmospheric  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  "Skuggoka  Kallar"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Nordvis.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  pagan  style  vocals  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  after  awhile  grim  black  metal  screams  start  to  make  their  presence  known.

  Atmospheric  synths  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  along  with  some  folk  instruments  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  songs  as  well  as  all  of  the  music  sticking  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  paced  direction  and  they  close  the  album  with  two  tracks  that  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  On  this  recording  Skogen  adds  more  folk  music  influences  into  their  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  Swedish  and  English  and  cover  Nature  and  Nordic  Mythology  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Skogen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  folk  music  inspired  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Det  Nordiska  Morket"  "Frostland"  and  "Beneath  The  Trees".  8  out  of  10.

Skogen/Eld/Nordvis Produktion/2017 CD Re-Issue

 Skogen  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "Eld"  which  will  be  re-issued  in  February  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

  Nature  orientated  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavier  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  introduces  grim  black  metal  screams  onto  the  recording  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion.

  When  acoustic  guitars  are  used  on  the  recording  they  give  the  songs  more  of  a  progressive  and  folk  music  feeling  and  melodic  vocals  are  also  uses  at  times  and  keyboards  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  and  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  edge.

  There  is  also  a  brief  use  of  growls  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  also  brings  in  a more  raw  style  of  black  metal  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sound  very  powerful  and  they  also  bring  in  a  brief  instrumental  before  returning  back  to  vocal  tracks and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  On  this  recording  Skogen  remained  very  true  to  the  folk  orientated  style  of  atmospheric  black  metal  that  has  been  a  part  of  their  releases, the  production  sounds  very  dark  yet  powerful  at  the  same  time  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording from  Skogen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Apokalypsens  Vit  Dimma"  "Aska"  and  "Orcus  Labyrint".  8  out  of  10.

  Skogen  are  a  band  from Sweden  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  nature  orientated  form  of  atmospheric  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2011  album "Svitjod"  which  will  be  re-issued  in  October  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

  A  very  dark,  melodic  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  grim yet  high  pitched black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later  while  growls  can  also  be  heard at  times  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present on  the recording  and  synths  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

 At  times  the  music  can  be  very atmospheric  and  some  tracks  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  singing  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  remain  very  true  to  a  melodic  direction while  some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  classical  guitars  can also  be heard  in certain  sections  of  the recording  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  folk  felling  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats can  be  heard and  the tremolo  picking  gives  the  songs more  of a  raw  feeling  while  most  of  the  music  sticks  either  to  a  slow  or  mid  paced direction.

  Skogen  played  a style  of  black  metal  on  this  recording  that  was  very  epic,  melodic,  mid  paced  and  atmospheric  sounding  while  still  maintaining  a  grim  edge,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  yet  heavy  at  the  same  time  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Skogen and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE "Dighra  Dodh"  "Bergraven"  "Storm" and  "Svitjod".  8  out  of  10.

Skogen/I Doden/Eisenwald/2015 LP Review

  Skogen  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  an  epic  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "I  Doden"  which  is  getting  the  vinyl  version  from  Eisenwald  in  2015.

  Classical  guitars  which  also  return  on  and  off  in  other  songs  start  off  the  album  and  after  the  intro  the  music  gets  heavier and  darker  along  with  more  of  a  black  metal  style  along  with  some  grim  screams  a  few  seconds  later  and  clean  singing  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  songs  and  after  awhile  melodic  guitar  leads  start  becoming  an  important  part  of  the  recording.

  A  good  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  pagan  black  metal  feeling  at  times  and  the  songs  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  atmospheric  elements  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  it  brings  in  a  very  raw  and  90's  influenced  style  and  also  mixes  in  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  there  are  also  a  couple  of  instrumental  tracks  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Skogen  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  melodic,  atmospheric  and  epic  sounding  and  also  adds in  a  touch  of  folk  and  progressive  music at  times,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Skogen  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "I  Doden" "Solarvore"  "Midvintergraven"  and  "Sleep".  8  out  of  10.
