Enslaved/Caravans To The Outer Worlds/Nuclear Blast Records/2021 EP Review

 

  Norway's  Enslaved  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  progressive  style  of  viking  black  metal  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of their  2021  ep  "Caravans  To  The  Outer  Worlds"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Nuclear  Blast  Records.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  powerful  sounding  bass  guitars  a  few  seconds  later.  Keyboards  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  clean  playing  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  progressive  feeling  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast beats  can  be  heard  along  with  some  clean  singing  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  elements  of  prog  rock  being  added  into  some  of  the  songs  and  when  acoustic  guitars  are  utilized  they  also  add  in  touches  of  folk  music.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Norse  Spirituality  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Enslaved  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Caravans  to  The  Outer  Worlds".  8  out  of  10.

Enslaved/Utgard/Nuclear Blast Records/2020 CD Review

  Norway's Enslaved  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  progressive  style  of  viking  black  metal  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Utgard"  which  will  be  released  in  October by  Nuclear  Blast  Records.

  Melodic  viking  chants  and  vocals  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  acoustic  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  adds  in  touches  of  folk  music  when  they  are  utilized.  The  heavier riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  synths  also  giving  the  songs  more  of  a  progressive  feeling.

 When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  the  lo  picking  also  showing  a  little  bit  of  the  aggression  that  was  more  present  on  their  earlier  releases.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  A  couple  of  tracks  also  introduce  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  album  which  also gives  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling,  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  electronic  music  elements  can  also  be heard,  some  of  the  riffing  also  shows  an  influence  of  traditional  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  Norwegian  and  English  and  cover  Norse  Mythology  and  Paganism  from  a  Jungian  Perspective.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Enslaved  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Fires  In  the  Dark"  "Homebound"  and  "Distant  Seasons".  8  out  of  10.

Enslaved/Roadburn Live/Roadburn Records/By Norse Music/2017 CD Review

  Norway's  Enslaved  have  returned  with  their  first  official  live  recording  that  focuses  mostly  on  their  newer  material  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Roadburn  Live"  which  will  be  released  in  May  as  a  joint  effort  between  Roadburn  Music  and  By  Norse  Music.

  Audience  feedback  along  with  some  heavy  guitar  riffing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  vocals  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  awhile  grim  black  metal  screams  start  to  make  their  presence  known  and  keyboards  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of   melody.

  At  times  the  music  can  get  very  progressive  and  clean  playing  along  with  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  a  more  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast parts  and  they  close  the  album  with  a cover  of  Led  Zeppelin's  "Immigrant  Song".

  Enslaved  plays  mostly  their  newer  material  on  this  recording  which  is  mostly  done  in a  more  progressive  style  of  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Norse  Mythology,  Vikings,  Nature  and  Spirituality  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Enslaved  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  live  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Death  In  The  Eyes  Of  Dawn"  "Convoys  To  Nothingness"  and  "Immigrant  Song".  8  out  of  10.

Enslaved/The Sleeping Gods-Thorn/Norse Music 2016 Compilation Re-Issue Review

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Enslaved  that  shows  them  going  into  more  of  a  progressive  black  metal  direction  with the  both  ep's  "The  Sleeping  Gods"  and  Thorn"  which  where    originally  being  released  in  2011  and  will  be  re-issued  in  November  by  Norse  Music.

  Melodic  guitar  leads  and  heavy  riffs  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  singing  vocals  a  few  seconds  later  and  atmospheric  synths  can  also  be  heard  in  the  music  at  times  and  after  awhile  grim  black  metal  screams  make  their  presence  known  on  the  recording  and  the  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  some  of  the  old  school  Norwegian  black  metal  style  returns  while  the  main  focus  is  more  on a   modern  and  progressive  sound  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  as  the  compilation  progresses  the  music  starts getting  more  experimental.

 Spoken  word  parts  can  also  being  used  briefly  on  a  couple  of  the  tracks  and  one  of  the  songs  is  all  instrumental and  clean  guitars  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  when  acoustic  guitars  are  utilized  it  adds  in  a  touch  of  folk  music  and  all  of  the  songs  sound  different  from  each  other  while  one  song  also  shows  the  black  metal  screams  getting  more  high  pitched.

  With  both  of  these  ep's  Enslaved  went  for  more  of  a  progressive  direction  while  still  mixing  in  their  black  metal  roots  to  give  the  songs  more  of  a  heavy  edge,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  Norwegian  and  English  and  cover  Norse  Mythology  and  the  esoteric  side  of  runes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  compilation  from  Enslaved  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  progressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Synthesis"  and  "Disintegrater".  8  out  of  10.

Enslaved/Vikingligr Veldi/Norse Music 2016 Vinyl Re-Issue Review

 Enslaved  are  a  band  from  Norway  that  has  been  around  for  more  than  20  years  that  played  a  more  viking  style  of  black  metal  on  this  recording  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1994  album  "Vikingligr Veldi"  which  will  be  re-issued  on  September  23rd  by  Norse  Music.

  Atmospheric  keyboards  start  off  the  album  along  with  melodic  riffing  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  awhile  black  metal  screams  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.

  At  times  the  riffs  can  be  very  melodic  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  and  the  songs  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts and  as  the  album  progresses  acoustic  guitars  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  synths  also  bring  in  progressive  elements  on  one  of  the  tracks  and  the  last  song  is  all  instrumental.

  Enslaved  played  a  style  of  pagan/black  metal  on  this  recording  that  was  more  rawer  than  their  current  material  while  also  mixing  in  atmospheric  and  epic  sounding  synths  and  they  influenced  a  lot  of  bands  back  in  the  day,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in Icelandic  and  cover  Norse  Paganism,  Mythology  and  History.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  a  very  great  sou8nding  recording from  Enslaved  and  while  most  of  their  fans  probably  already  own  this,  i  would  recommend  younger  fans  that  want  to  learn  the  earlier  history  of  Norwegian  black  metal  to  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Vetranott"  and  "Heimdallr".  8/5  out of  10.

Enslaved/Frost/Osmose Productions/1994 CD Review

  Enslaved are a band from Norway that played a very raw and primitive form of atmospheric viking/black metal with this release and this is a review of their classic 1994 album "Frost" which was released by Osmose Productions.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with a good amount of blast beats being thrown in at times as well as some percussion work, while the keyboards bring a very dark and atmospheric sound to the music mixed in with some electronics and pagan sounding mouth harps, as for the bass playing it has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars and at times they have a very powerful sound to them.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast black metal riffs that are very raw and primitive sounding at times while still utilizing a  lot of skill and melody as well as some influences from other forms of metal while the lead guitars which are only utilized rarely have a very raw and primitive sound to the guitar solos and leads, as for the acoustic guitars when they are utilized they use finger picking and full chords to enhance the darkness and atmosphere of the music.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams mixed in with a small amount of spoken word parts, clean singing and viking chants, while the lyrics are written in Norwegian and cover Asataru and Norse Paganism themes, as for the production it has a very dark, raw and primitive sound to it.

In my opinion this was the greatest album that Enslaved has put out and if you are a fan of this band, you probably already own this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Loke" "Yggdrasil" "Jotunblod" and "Wotan". RECOMMENDED BUY.
