Fen/Monuments To Abscence/Prophecy Productions/Lupus Lounge/2023 Full Length Review

 

  United  Kingdom's  Fen  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  style  of  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Monuments  To  Absence"  which  will b e  released  in  July  as  a  joint  effort  between  Prophecy  productions  and  Lupus  Lounge,

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  

  Clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Growls  are  also  utilized  at  times  along  with  the  synths  also  giving  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  when  they  are  introduced  on  the  recording.

  Clean  playing  is  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style  when  they  are  utilized  as  well  as  the  music  also  being  more  aggressive  than  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  anger,  hopelessness  and  despair  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Fen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Scourging  Ignorance"  "Truth  Is  Futility"  and  "All  Is  Lost".  8  out  of  10.

Fen/The Dying Light/Prophecy Productions/2019 CD Review

  United  Kingdom's  Fen  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  into  more  of  an  atmospheric  and  progressive  style  of  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "The  Dying  Light"  which  was  released  by  Prophecy  Productions.

  Ambient  style  soundscapes  and  clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  while  elements  of  post  rock  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  the  music  also  mixing  the  heavy  and  atmospheric  parts  together.

  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Clean  vocals  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Grim  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  as  well  as  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear a   decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  When  acoustic  guitars  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  progressive  feeling  along  with  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  death  metal  growls.  One  of  the  tracks  is  also  an  instrumental  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  whispered  vocals  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  professional while  the  lyrics  cover  solitude,  sorrow,  landscape  and  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Fen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  progressive  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Witness"  "Labyrinthe  Echoes"  and  "Rendered  In  Onyx".  8  out  of  10.

Fen/Winter/Code666 Records/2017 CD Review

  United  Kingdom's  Fen  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Winter"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Code666  Records.

  Distorted  guitar  sounds  start  off  the  album  while  also  adding  in  an  ambient  and  post  rock  touch  and  after  awhile  acoustic  guitars  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  also  return  in  some  of  the  later  tracks  along  with  some  drum beats  and  melodic  singing  is  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  black  metal  screams  are  utilized  mostly.

  All  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in length  and  after  awhile  the  music  starts  getting  very  heavy  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  growls  while  some  of  the  guitars  add  in  clean  riffing  and  elements  of  doom  metal  can  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs.

  Fen  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  atmospheric  style  of  post  black  metal  that  they  have  established on  previous releases,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  solitude,  sorrow,  landscapes and  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Fen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Penance"  and  "Death".  8  out  of  10.

Sleepwalker/Fen/Stone And Sea/Call Of Ashes II/Ksenza Records/2016 Split CD Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Russia's  Sleepwalker  and  United  Kingdom's  Fen  called  "Stone  And  Sea/Call  Of  Ashes  II"  which  was  released  by  Ksenza  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Sleepwalker  a  band  that  plays  an  occult  mixture  of  dark  ambient,  drone,  post  metal  and  ethereal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  acoustic  guitar  playing  and  atmospheric  synths  and  after  awhile  melodic  guitar  leads  are  added  onto  their  side  of  the  recording  along  with  some  ethereal  and  ambient  elements  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  decent  amount  of  heavy  riffs  and  one  of  their  tracks  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  all  3  songs  being  instrumental  and  drones  are  added  on  a  later  track  while  the  production  sounds  very  professional.

  In  my  opinion  Sleepwalker  are  a  very  great  sounding  occult  mixture  of  dark  ambient,  drone,  post  metal,  and  ethereal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Somnambulistic  Trance".

  Next  up  is  Fen  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  post  black  metal.

 Their  side  of  the  split  stats  out  with  acoustic  guitar  playing  and  post  rock  elements  before  adding  in  more  heavy  riffs  and  drums  and  after  awhile  clean  vocals  are  added  onto  their  side  of  the  recording  while  also  mixing  in  a  great  amount  of  grim  black  metal  screams  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  the  tracks  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  deep  growls  are  also  used  at  times  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  most  of  their  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  with  one  song  being  an  acoustic  instrumental,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  solitude,  sorrow,  landscape,  and  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Fen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Tides  Of  Glass".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  dark  ambient  and  atmospheric/post  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Fen/De Arma/Towards The Shores On The End/Nordvis Productions/2011 CD Review

 This is a review of the split album between Fen and DeArma which was released by  Nordvis Productions and we will start of the review with Fen a band from England that plays an ambient form of black metal with a post rock edge.

Drums range from slow to mid paced playing with not much in the way of fast drumming or blast beats, while the keyboards sound very tragic and atmospheric, as for the bass playing it has very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars and on a couple of songs they have a very powerful sound.

Rhythm guitars range from slow to mid paced ambient black metal riffs that have a very depressing sound with some melodies being used at times, while the lead guitars have a really depressing and tragic feel to them with a doomy edge, a for the acoustic guitars when they are used briefly they use finger picking and full chords to enhance the darkness.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams with some clean singing vocals being thrown in at times as well as the occasional deep growl, while the lyrics cover depressive and melancholic themes, as for the production it has a very dark sound to it.

In my opinion Fen are a very good ambient black metal band and if you are a fan of this style you should check out this band.

Now we are going to review DeArma, little is known about this band and they play a raw form of ambient black metal with an avant garde edge.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast with some blast beats, while the synths very atmospheric and ambient sounding, as for the bass playing it is mixed down low in the mix and seems to follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast raw ambient black metal riffs, while the lead guitars have a very dark and tragic sound to them.

Vocals range from clean singing to high pitched black metal screams, while the lyrics touch on dark themes, as for the production it has a very primal and dark feeling to it.

In my opinion DE Arma have he best songs on this album, and I would recommended this album to all fans of black metal that is more directed towards to ambient, shoegaze and post rock genres.
