Black Mold/Antinomy/Helldprod Records/2025 EP Review

 

  Portugal's  Black  Mold  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  raw  mixture  of  black  metal  and  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  ep  "Antinomy"  which  will  be  released  on  December  25th  by  Helldprod  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  music  also  incorporates  a  lot  of  punk  elements  as  well as  the  recording  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  old  school  touches.   

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  synths  are  added  into  the  background  on  a  couple  of  songs.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along with  the  vocals  going  into  more  of  an  aggressive  punk  direction  on  later  tracks  and  all  of  the  riffing  is  done  on  power  chord  and  the  closing  track  is  a  Ramones  cover.

  On  this  recording  Black  Mold  continue  to  expand  on  the r aw  mixture  of  black  metal  and  punk  that  they  have  introduced  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  nihilism  and  darkness  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Black  Mold  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  black  metal  and  punk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Grinding  Death"  and  "The  Inertial  Fog".  8  out  of  10.

Black Mold/In The Dirt Of Oblivion/Helldprod Records/2024 Full Length Review

 

  Portugal's  Black  Mold  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  raw  mixture  of  black  metal  and  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "In  The  Dirt  Of  Oblivion"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Helldprod  Records.

  A  very  heavy  yet  aggressive  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats.  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  second  wave  era  of  the  genre.

  Elements  of  punk  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  album  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  short  in  length,  aggressive  shouting  vocals  can  also b e  heard  at  times  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to a   heavier  direction.

  On  this  recording  Black  Mold  remains  true  to  the  raw  mixture  of  black  metal  and  punk  that  they  have  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  hate  and  despair  themes.

  In  mu  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Black  Mold  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  black  metal  and  punk,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Toward  The  Black  Horizon"  "A  Passing  Glimpse"  "Broken  Rope"  and  "Futile  Purpose".  8  out  of  10.

Black Mold/The Unnatural Red Glow Of The Night/Hellprod Records/2023 EP Review

 

  Portugal's  Black  Mold  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  punk  influenced  style  of  raw  and  old  school  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of their  2023  ep  "The  Unnatural  Red  Glow  Of  The  Night"  which  will be  released  January  31st  by  Hellprod  Records.

  A  very  hard  and  heavy  punk  influenced  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later.  The  music  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of 80's  and  90's  influences  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Most  of  the  tracks  stick  to  either  a  1  or  2  minute  limit  while  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can be  heard  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  brief  use  of  melodies  and  all  of  the  music  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.

  On  this  recording  Black  Mold  expands  on  the  punk  influenced  style  of  old  school  black  metal  that  they  have  introduced  on  a  previous  release.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  atavistic  nihilism,  addiction  and  demonology  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Black  Mold  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  old  school  black  metal  with  elements  of  punk,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Venomous  Light"  and  "Pointed  Towards  Abstraction".  8  out  of  10.

  Portugal's Black  Mold  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  punk  influenced  form  of  raw  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "The  Inheritance Of  Evil"  which  will  be  released  on  cassette  in  November  by  Hellprod  Records.

  A  very  heavy  and  punk  influenced  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  first  wave  vibe.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  melody.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  both  80's  and  90's  era  influences  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  a  good  balance  between  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  all  of  the  music  also  sticking  to  a  heavier  musical  direction.

  On  this  recording  Black  Mold  remain  true  to  the  punk  influenced  style  of  black  metal  that  was  established  on  their  previous  release.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Darkness  and  Atavistic  Nihilism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Black  Mold  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  punk  influenced  black  metal, you  should  check  out  this  cassette.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ascended  Masters"  "Long  Night"  "The  Invisible  Hand"  and  "Ghosts  In  The  Mirror".  8  out  of  10.

Black Mold/Tales Of Degradation/Hellprod Records/2019 Demo Review

  Black  Mold  are  a  band  from  Portugal  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  punk  influenced  form  of  raw  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  demo  "Tales  Of  Degradation"  which  will  be  released  on  May  25th  by  Hellprod  Records.

  Tortured  chants  start  off  the  demo  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  which  also  shows  some  punk  and  first  wave  influences.  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  music  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  both  80's  and  90's  influences.

  When  tremolo picking  is  utilized  it  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  music  always  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.

  On  this  recording  Black  Mold  takes  their  raw  style  of  black  metal  into  more  of  an  old  school  and  punk  influenced  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  occult  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Black  Mold  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  punk  influenced  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Astral  Dome"  and  "Bringer  Of  Light".  8  out  of  10.

Black Mold/Atavism/Helldprod Records/2018 Demo Review

  Black  Mold  are  a  band  from  Portugal  that  plays  a  very  raw  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  demo  "Atavism"  which  will  be  released  in October  on  cassette  by  Helldprod  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  demo  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  all  of t he  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's.

  All  of  the  tracks  are  very  short  in  length  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  the  raw  energy  of  punk  at  times,  all  of  the  riffs a re  done  with  power  chords  with  no  solos,  leads  or  melodies  ever  being  utilized  as  well  as  always  remaining  heavy.

  Black  Mold  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  fast,  raw  and  old  school  sounding  in  the  90's  tradition,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Black  Mold  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Let  It  Burn"  and  "Shroud  Of  Bodies".  8  out  of  10.
