Mustan Kuun Lapset/Suruaika/Inverse Records/2023 EP Review

 

  Finland's  Mustan  Kuun  Lapset  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  black  and  dark  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  ep  "Suruaika"  which  was  released  by  Inverse  Records.

  Stringed  instruments  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  keyboards  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  A  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  one  also  going  into  more  of  a  folk  music  direction  and  adding  in  some  clear  vocals  and  acoustic  guitars,  female  vocals  are  also  added  on  the  closing  track  which  also  adds  in  a  touch  of  gothic  metal.

  On  this  recording  Mustan  Kuun  Lapset  brings  in  a  couple  of  very  heavy  and  melodic  black/dark  metal  songs  and 1 folk  music  track  to  create  a  very  diverse  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  poetry,  nature,  longing  and  death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mustan  Kuun  Lapset  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  and  dark  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  NCLUDE  "Muistoa  kunnioittaen"  and  "Morfiinisiivet  (alas  de  morfina)".  8 out  of  10.

Mustan Kuun Lapset/Suruntuoja/Inverse Records/2022 Album Re-Issue Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  an  earlier  recording  from  Finland's  Mustan  Kuun  Lapset  which  showed  the  music  going  for  a  melodic  mixture  of  black  and  dark  metal  and  the  album  was  originally  released  in  2002  and  called  "Suruntuoja"  which  was  re-issued  in  2022  by  Inverse  Records  with  2  live  bonus  tracks  from  2016  and  3  original  cassette  demo  tracks  that  where  released  in  2000.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls.

  When  synths  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  dark  metal  elements.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts.  One  of  the  tracks  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars  as  well  as  the  demo  tracks  also  bringing  in  more  of  a  rawer  approach.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  darkness,  death  and  anti  religion  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  a  very  great  sounding  recording  from  Mustan  Kuun  Lapset  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  melodic  and  old  school  black  and  dark  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Seremonia"  "oysi"  and  "Taivaan  takana".  8  out  of  10.

Mustan Kuun Lapset/Ei Sävyjä Pimeässä - The Complete 90s Collection/Inverse Records/2021 Compilation Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  compilation from  Finland's  Mustan  Kuun  Lapset  which  consists  of  their  90s  material  which  was  done  in  more  of  a  raw  and  melodic  black  metal  style  and  the  album  is  called  "Ei Sävyjä  Pimeässä  -  The  Complete 90s  Collection"  and  was  released  by  Inverse  Records.

  Drum  beats  and  heavy  riffing  starts  off  the  compilation  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  faster  sections  of t he  songs  also  adding  in a   great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Vocals a r e mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  that  also  get  deep  sounding  at  times  while  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  Throughout  the  compilation  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  keyboards.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  as  well  as  some  of  the  later  tracks  also  adding  in  elements  of  dark  metal  which  also  became  more  dominant  on  later  releases  from  the  band,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  compilation.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  English  and  Finnish  and  cover  Satanism,  Occultism,  Anti  Christianity  and Darkness  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Mustan  Kuun  Lapset  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw,  melodic  and  old  school  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDEDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Taivas  ja  maa"  "I  Shall  Wither"  "Kuka  palvoo Saatanaa"  and  "Lilith".  8  out  of  10.

  Finland's  Mustaan  Kuun  Lapset  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  them  moc=ving  away  from  the  black/dark  metal  style  of  previous  releases  and  going  into  more  of  an  acoustic  folk  direction  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Krunnu"  which  was  released  by  Inverse  Records.

 Acoustic  guitars  and  folk  instruments  start  off  the  album  while  also  capturing  a  very  melancholic  atmosphere.  Vocals  are  done  in  mostly  a  clean  style  along  with  some  drums  also  being  utilized  at  times  as  well  as  having  some  synths  in  the  background  at  times  and  the  guitars  also  bring  in  a  good  mixture  of  finger  picking  and  full chords/

  Some  of  the  songs  are  also  acoustic  versions  of  their  metal  tracks  while  female  vocals  can  also  be  at  times.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  whispers  also  being  utilized  briefly  and  electric  guitars  can  also b e  heard  briefly  on  the  closing  track  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  guitar  leads. 

  On  this  recording  Mustaan  Kuun  Lapset  moves  way  from  the  black/dark  metal  style  of  previous  releases  and  goes  for  more  of  an  acoustic  folk  music  to  create  something  very  different.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  Finnish  and  English  and  cover  poetry,  nature,  wandering  and  death  themes

.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mustaan  Kuun  Lapset  and  while  some  black  and d ark  metal  fans  might  not  be  into  the  new  style,  I  can  see  this  appealing  to  fans  of  neo  folk.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kruunu"  "Ikaros"  "Saatto"  and  "The  Dream  About  A  Dying  Angel".  8  out  of  10.

Mustan Kuun Lapset/Valo/Inverse Records/2019 CD Review

  Finland's  Mustan  Kuun  Lapset  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  dark and  black  metal  mixture  of  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Valo"  which  will  be  released  on  March  8th  by  Inverse  Records.

  Kantale's  start  off  the  album  giving  the  music  more  of  a  Finnish  folk  music  feeling  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  slower  riffing  shows  an  influence  of  doom  metal  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.  A  great  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  music  adding  in  some  atmospheric  sounding  keyboards  and  violins  at  times.

  Acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  a  couple  of  songs  as  the  album  progresses  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  a  brief  use  of  female  vocals  onto  the  recording.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  music  sticking  to  mostly  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  style  while  a  couple  of  songs  shows  the  music  speeding  up  for  a  little  bit  and  also  introducing  blast  beats  onto  the  recording.

 The  album  also  closes  with  an  instrumental  while  they  also  bring  in  a  bonus  hidden  track  after  a  few  minutes  which  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  male  vocals  towards  the  end.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  poetic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mustan  Kunn  lapset  which  shows  the  band  adding in  elements  of  Finnish  folk  music  to t heir  mixture  of  dark  and  black  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Eksyneet"  "Nostalgia"  and  "Valo".  8  out  of  10.

Mustan Kuun Lapset/Saatto/Inverse Records/2017 Full Length Review

  Mustan  Kuun  Lapset  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  dark  and  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  album  "Saatto"  which  will  be  released  in  2017  by  Inverse  Records.

  Atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  and  after  the  intro the  music  gets  heavier  while  also  introducing  melodic  guitar  leads  onto  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  synths  mix  in  with  the  heavy  parts.

  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  deep  growls  and  the  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  the  music  also  incorporates  a  great  amount  of  Finnish  90's  dark  metal  influences  while  also  sounding  very  modern  at  the  same  time  and  all  most the  songs  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction.

  There  is  also  a  brief  use  of  blast  beats  on a  couple  of  songs  and  a  couple  of  tracks  also  brings  in  elements  of  folk  music  and  some  of  the  solos  and  leads  also  have  a  traditional  metal  feeling  to  them  at  times  and  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  it  uses  tremolo  picking  to  give  the  song  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  one  track  also  introduces  female  vocals  onto  the  recording  and  the last  track  is  long  and  epic  in  length  which  also  uses  a  small  amount  of  stringed  instruments  and  clean  singing  male  vocals.

  Mustan  Kuun  Lapset  plays  a  musical  style that  takes  dark  and  black  metal  to  create  a  melodic  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  poetic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Mustan  Kunn  Lapset  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  dark  and  black  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Peikonmieli"  "Sudenima"  and  "Saatto".  8  out  of  10.

  Mustan  Kuuun  Lapset  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  atmospheric  black  metal  and  melodic  dark  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own, t he  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  dark,  satanic,  and  poetic  themes.
