Mavradoxa/Nightmarrow/Hypnotic Dirge Records/2019 Full Length Review

Mavradoxa  are  a  band  from  New  York  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording   plays  a  very  melodic  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Nightmarrow"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Hypnotic  Dirge  Records.

  A  very  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  black  metal  screams  being  introduced  onto  the  recording  a  few  seconds  later.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  solos  and  leads  also  utilize  a  great  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  adding  in  a  touch  of  traditional  metal.

  At  times  the  screams  also  get  very  depressive  sounding  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  music  also  getting  very  atmospheric  sounding  at  times.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  gear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean  playing  and  clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  acoustic  instrumentals,  at  times  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  isolation  and  hopelessness  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mavradoxa  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  melodic  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Carrion  Shade"  and  "Black  Crystal  Snowfall".  8  out  of  10.

Mavradoxa/Lethean Lament/Hypnotic Dirge Records/2017 CD Review

  Mavradoxa  are  a  band from  New  York  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their 2017  album  "Lethean  Lament"  which  will  be  released  on  June  22nd  by  Hypnotic  Dirge  Records.

  Classical  guitars  start  off  the  album  and  they  also  give  the  music  some  progressive  and  folk  touches  along  with  some  stringed  instruments  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  heavier and  atmospheric  musical  direction  along  with  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling.

  Throughout  the  recording  there  is  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  some  deep  growls  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  acoustic  guitars  also  return  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  along  with  the  introduction  of  clean  vocals.

  Mavradoxa  plays  a  style  of  atmospheric  black  metal  that  also adds  in  a  touch  of  progressive  and  folk  music,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature,  death,  spirituality  and  darkness  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Mavradoxa  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Phantom  Visages"  and  "From  Fog".  8 out  of  10.
