Lustre/Reverence/Nordvis Produktion/2023 EP Review

 

  Sweden's  solo  project  Lustre  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  atmospheric  and  ambient  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  ep  "Reverence"  which  was  released  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

 Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  ep  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  song  at  times.  The  only  track  that  is  present  on  the  recording  is  also  over  20  minutes  in  length  while  the  music  also h as  its  atmospheric  moment  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  Clear  vocals  which  are  done  mostly  by  J.J  of  Harikari  For  The  Sky  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  while  the  riffs  also  add  in    decent  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  the  whole  recording  also  sticks  to  a  slower  direction.

  On  this  recording  Lustre  remains  true  to  the  atmospheric  style  of  ambient  black  metal  that  he  has  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  based  upon  a  poem  written  by  Robert  Frost.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording f rom  Lustre  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  8  out  of  10.

Lustre/A Thirst For Summer Rain/Nordvis Production/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Sweden's  solo  project  Lustre  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  atmospheric  style  of  ambient  black  metal  from  his  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2022  album  "A  Thirst  For  Summer  Rain"  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Nordvis  Production.

  Ambient  style  keyboards  start  off  the  album  while  also  mixing  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  all  of  the  drum  beats  also  being  programmed  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  The  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  vocals  also  taking  a  backseat  to  the  guitars  and  keyboards  to  focus  on  the  atmosphere  and  only  appearing  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  a  slower  direction.

  On  this  recording  Lustre  remains  true  to  the  atmospheric  style  of  ambient  black  metal  that  he  has  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  hope,  faith  and  inspiration  through  dark  times.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Lustre  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  ambient  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Quiescence"  and  "Thirst".  8  out  of  10.

Lustre/Ashes Of Light/Nordvis Produktion/2020 Full Length Review

  Sweden's   solo  project  Lustre  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  atmospheric  style  of  ambient  black  metal  from  his  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Ashes  Of  Light"  which  will  be released  in  April  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

  Ambient  style  keyboards  start  off  the  album  and  they  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  music  also  getting  very  atmospheric  sounding  at  times.

  The  keyboards  also  add  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  while some  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals.  The  music  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  all  of  the  drum  beats  being  programmed  and  the  songs  also  take  a  style  that  is  very  close  to  the early  Summoning  and  Fear  of  Eternity  albums  and  mixes  them  with  a  more  modern  take  on  the  ambient  black  metal  genre,  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  are  ever  utilized  and  all  of  the  songs  also  stick  to  a  slower  musical  direction.

  On  this  recording  Lustre  remains  true  to  the  atmospheric  style  of ambient  black  metal  which  he  has  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  search  for  lost  secrets  in  the  woods,  among  the  stars.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Lustre  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  solo  project,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Eyes  Like  Stars"  and  "The  Ashes  Of  Light".  8  out  of  10.

Lustre/Another Time, Another Place(Chapter Two)/Morrowless Music/2019 Compilation Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  the  second  compilation  from  Sweden's  solo  project  Lustre  which  is  also  in  the  atmospheric  direction  of  ambient  black  metal  and  the  album  will  be  released  in  March  by  Morrowless  Music  and  is  called  "Another  Time,  Another  Place(Chapter  Two"  which  consists  of  the  2008  ep  "Serenity"  and  the  2013  ep  "A  Spark  of  Times  Old".

  A  very  heavy  and  atmospheric  sound  starts  off  the  compilation  along  with  some  ambient  style  synths.  All  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  depressive  black  metal  screams  which  are  mostly  utilized  in  the  background  as  well  as  the  riffing  also  getting  very  repetitive  at  times.

  All  of  the  songs  stick  to  a  very  slow  musical  direction  while  the  second  track  on  the  first  ep  is  an  ambient  instrumental.  Nature  orientated  field  recordings  start  off  the  song  on  the  second  ep  which  is  an  almost  20 minute  track  before  adding  in  some  ambient  style  synths  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  as  well  as  keeping  the  same  style  and  atmosphere  of  the  previous  recording.

  On  this  compilation  Lustre  takes  ambient  and  atmospheric  black  metal and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature,  darkness,  mysticism  and  spirituality  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  collection  from  Lustre  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  solo  project,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "A  Spark  of  Times  Old".  8  out  of  10.

  Lustre  are  a  solo  project  from  Sweden  that  has  had  a  few  albums  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  style  of  ambient  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  the  first  of  two  compilation albums  "Another  Time,  Another  (Chapter  One)"  which  will  be  released  in  March  of  2019  by  Morrowless  Music  and  consists  of  the  unreleased  2013  ep "The  Ardour  Of  Autumn"  and  the  2009  ep  "Welcome  Winter".

  Ambient  style  keyboards  start  off  the  compilation  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  quite  a  bit  throughout  all  of  the  tracks.  All  of  the  songs  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  depressive  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  the  music  also  getting  very  atmospheric  at  times.

  Programmed  drum  beats  are  also  used  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  compilation  while  some  of  the  keyboards  and  heavy  parts  remind  me  of  some  of  the  material  released  by  Summoning  and  Fear  Of  Eternity.  A  lot  of  the  vocals  are  only used  briefly  with  the  music  focusing  more  on  an  atmospheric  and  epic  style.

  A  lot  of  the  music  on  the  second  demo  keeps  the  same  style  of  later  material  while  showing  a  little  bit  more  rawness  than  the  recent  material  as  well as  keeping  everything  in  a  very  slow  musical  direction  which  was  also  very  common  on  the  more  recent  music.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature,  darkness,  mysticism  and  spirituality  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Lustre  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  project,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Ardour  Of  Autumn  Part  II"  and  "Welcome  Winter  II".  8  out  of  10.

  Sweden's  solo  project  Lustre  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  atmospheric  and  ambient  form  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2017  album  "Still  Innocence"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  when t hey  are  utilized  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  most  of  the songs  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  At  times  the  music  gets  very  atmospheric  while  baby  samples  are  also  used  briefly  along  with  a  great  portion  of  the  music  going  into  more  of  an  instrumental  route  along  with  one  track  also  being  pure  ambient  and  all  of  the  songs  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  musical  direction.

  On  this  recording  Lustre  remains  true  to  the  ambient  and  atmospheric  style  of  previous  releases  while  also  going  into  more  of  an  instrumental  direction  and  the  production  sounds  very  professional.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Lustre  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  solo  project,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Nestle  Within"  and  "Without  End".  8  out  of  10.

Lustre/Wonder/Nordvis/2013 CD Review

  Lustre  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical  style  I  would  describe  as  being  atmospheric,  ambient  black  metal  and  this is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Wonder"  which  was  released  by  Nordvis.

  "Moonlight  Meadow"  starts  off  with  some  atmospheric  ambient  synth,  drum  programming  and  slow  black  metal  riffs  staying  that  way  for  awhile  and  the  grim  screams  start  kicking  in  before  the  music  goes  into  a  more  soft  and  mellow  direction  while  still  utilizing  the  heavy  parts  and  vocals  as  well  as  the  synths  changing  the  pace  around  to  add  more  variety  to  this  long  and  epic  song  as  well  as  introducing  whispered  parts  towards  the  end.

  "Green  Worlds"  starts  off  with  a  slow  dark  ambient  sound  before  the  guitar  riffs  kick  in  with  the drum  programming  which  leads  to  even  more  powerful  and  melodic  sounds  from  the  synths  as  well  as  switching  back  and  forth  between  the  soft  and  heavy  parts  and  there  are  no  vocals  present  on  the  song  with  the  music  being  all  instrumental.

  "A  Summer  Night"  starts  off  with  some  mid  paced  black  metal  riffs,  drum  programming  and  powerful  yet  atmospheric  sounding  synths  and  then  the  screams  start  kicking  in  which  remain  in that  direction  for  5  minutes  until  the  new  wave  and  synth  pop  sounds  kick  in  while  also  throwing  in  some  slow  ambient  black  metal  riffing  before  returning  to  the  more  mid  paced  parts.

  "Petrichor"  starts  off  with  some  Burzum  style  ambient  synths  before  the  drum  programming,  slow  and  heavy  riffs  kick  in  which  also  combine  very  well  with  the  softer  elements  until  the  song  goes  more  into  a  softer  direction  with  the  synths  also  utilizing  a  variety  of  different  sounding  keys  which  make  the  song  have  a  more  atmospheric  feeling  before  going  back  to  the  heavier  sounds  and  there  are  no  vocals  present  on t his  song  with  the  music  being  all  instrumental.

    Song  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  nature  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  dark  sound  with  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Lustre  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Moonlight  Meadow"  and  "A  Summer  Night".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Lustre/Of Strength And Solace/Nordvis Productions/2012 CD Review

  Lustre are a 1 man band from Sweden that plays a very atmospheric form of ambient black metal and this is a review of their 2012 album "Of Strength And Solace" which will be released by Nordvis Productions.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with a good amount of blast beats being thrown into the music, while the keyboards bring in a very dark ambient sounding sound to the music that has the feeling of early classic ambient, as for the bass playing it has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast black metal riffs that are very dark, raw and primitive sounding and there are no guitar solos or leads present on this recording with the music going for more of a mimimilistic approach.

Vocals are all high pitched black metal screams while the lyrics touch on darkness, nature and mysticism with the songs being divided into 4 chapters, as for the production it has a very dark, raw and primitive sound to it.

In my opinion Lustre are a very great sounding nature orientated atmospheric ambient black metal band and if you are a fan of this style you check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Part 1" and "Part 3". RECOMMENDED BUY.
