Kolossus/K/My Kingdom Music/2021 CD Review

Kolossus  are  a  solo  project  from  Italy  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  goes  for  an  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2021  album  "K"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  My  Kingdom  Music.

Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  some  songs  also  add  in  some  clear  pagan  vocals.  Grim  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  and  dissonant  moments  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  showing  the  album  going  into  a  more  experimental  direction,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  songs  and  as  the  recording  progresses  a  small  amount  of  thrash  metal  elements  can  also  be  heard  and  one  track  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Northern  lands,  Gods,  Afterlife  Mysteries  and  Religious  Conflicts.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Kolossus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "By  The  light,  To  The  Dark"  "Throne  Of  Wood  And  Fire"  and  "The  Mouth".  8  out  of  10.

Kolossus Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?
Hi!First of all, thank you very much for your interest and to give me possibility to talk about Kolossvs.
The project was born in 2014 with the attempt to put once and for all my innumerable ideas.
It was a bit long “Journey”,because i needed to find the right balance to create all.

2.So far you have released one split and a full length, musically how do they both differ from each other?
Yes!The split was something special with another onemanband, ManoN (Albrecht for me is a brother),i'm very proud of this Ep!For Kolossvs ”The Line of the Border” is a natural music evolution, but with a real   drummer and a professional production.

3.Some of your lyrics cover pagan themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic?
The lyrics were written by Albrecht except “Journey” by me and a norwegian part in “Norge” by Vicotnik (Dodheimsgard). I'm really involved into historical Vikings traditions when i was a teenager, especially after  multiple listening's of my favorite bands (Enslaved in primis).

4.What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects you have explored with the music so far?
The lyrics talk about Viking divinities, Nature, Hate and religious conflicts. This is the perfect team for “The  Line of the Border” (ahahahah)

5.From 1998 to 2005 your where also involved with an industrial black metal solo project but where absent from recording music for a few years, can you tell us a little bit more about what was going on during  that time frame?
Yes,in that time i played and recorded some songs (5 or 6 i think) of industrial black metal fot T-132 (the name of the project). After that for a few years i've done nothing more, til 2014.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Kolossus?
Many might think to “strange” meaning, but it's very simple! My surname is Colosi, so the next step was   short. A surname black metal transformation!

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?
The album cover represents an iceberg that divides sea and sky, both black. That glacial monolith represents   Kolossvs, The line of the Border.

8.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?
Kolossvs is a personal project which collaborates every album only with a session drummer and might a special guest. The only possibility is for eventually live exhibition, because i can't play all myself (ahahah).

9.In 2018 you where a part of a split with 'Manon' what are your thoughts on the other solo project that had participated on the recording?
As said before,ManoN is a project of my brother Albrecht. He has just finished his 2nd full album, a personal homage to the traditional Black Metal. I hope he will find very soon a label because it's a killer album!

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of viking and pagan black metal?
I've received some reviews from various webzine and all have been very good. Hope the name Kolossvs go around on the black viking metal world and after we'll see what happens!

11.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?
I see myself anywhere! I'll be waiting eventually for other feedback's to this album and I’ll work on the 2nd (a norwegian session drummer is recording his parts on these days).

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
I think that Enslaved and Taake had a great influence for Kolossvs, but also the all the Norwegian black metal movement of middle 90ies. Almost of the last album that i really like are from Djevel, Mork, Kampfar, Sinmara, Sunhopfer and Mispyrming.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words  or thoughts?
Thank you again  for this interview, see you in the Line of the Border!

Kolossus/The Line Of The Border/Satanath Records/The Ritual Productions/2020 CD Review

Kolossus  are  a  solo  project  from  Italy  that  plays  a  very  melodic  form  of  viking  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "The  Line  Of  The  Border"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Satanath  Records  and  The  Ritual  Productions.

Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  viking  vocals  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a very  powerful  sound  to  them.

The  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  Grim  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  acoustic  guitars  adding  in  elements  of  folk  music w hen  they  are  utilized. Spoken  word  parts  and  whispers  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  a  couple  of  tracks  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments,  the  album  also  closes  with  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  professorial  while  the  lyrics  cover  Northern  Lands  And  Gods.  Afterlife  mysteries  and  Religious  Conflicts.

In  my  opinion  Kolossus  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic  viking  black  metal solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Fog"  "Journey"  and  "Norge".  8  out  of  10.
