Xasthur/Disharmonic Vibrations/Lupus Lounge/2024 Full length Review

 

  U.S.A's  solo  project  Xasthur  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  very  dark  form  of  American  folk  music  mixed  in  with  elements  of  depressive  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2024  album  "Disharmonic  Vibrations"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  Lupus  Lounge.

  Acoustic  guitars  start  off  the  album  while  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  both  finger  picking  and  full  chords.  Elements  of  Americana  and  folk  music  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  the  heavier  guitars  and  keyboards also  bringing  in  elements  of  depressive  black  metal  when  they  are  utilized.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals  along  with  all  of  the  drum  beats  also  being  programmed  as  well as  some  songs  also  adding  in  12  string  guitars. 

  On  this  recording  Xasthur  focuses  more  on  a  dark  mixture  of  Americana  and  folk  music  as  well  as  only  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  black  metal  sounds  and  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Xasthur  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  both  his  dark  folk  and  black  emtal  material,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Mirrors  Made  Of  Misery"  "Who  Will  Smash  The  Mirror  Of  Lies"  "Other  Blind  Believers"  and  "Counterfeit  Pennies".  8  out  of  10.

Xasthur/Inevitably Dark/Prophecy Productions/Lupus Lounge/2023 Double Album Review

 

  U.S.A's  Xasthur  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  depressive  black  metal  and  neo-folk  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  double  album "Inevitably  Dark"  which  will  be  released  in  June  as  a  joint  effort  between  Prophecy  Productions  and  Lupus  Lounge.

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  atmospheric  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  keyboards  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  All  of  the  drums  are  also  programmed  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  sounding  very  powerful  as  well  as  all  of  the  tracks  also  being  instrumentals.

  Folk  instruments  and  acoustic  guitars  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  and  also  takes  the  music  into  more  of  a  neo-folk  direction  with  touches  of  doomgrass  and  Americana.  At  times  the  keyboards  give  the  songs  more  of  a  dark  ambient  and  dungeon  synths  atmosphere  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Some  of  the  mid  tempo  riffing  also  shows  an  influence  of  death  metal  as  well  as  one  song  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  psychedelia  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Xasthur  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  both  the  depressive  black  metal  and  neo-folk  era's  of  the  solo  project,  you  should  check  out  this  double  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  Future  To  Fear"  "Livre  Like  A  Broken  Mirror"  "Inevitably  Dark"  and  "Projection  af  Inferiority  II".  8  out  of  10.

Xasthur/Victims Of The Times/Lupus Lounge/Prophecy Productions/2021 CD Review

 

  Xasthur  are  a  band  from  the  United  States  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  moves  away  from  a  depressive  black  metal  style  and  goes  into  more  of  an  acoustic  acid  folk  direction  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Victims  Of  The  Times"  which  will  be  released  in  July  as  a  joint  effort  between  Lupus  Lounge  and  Prophecy  Productions.

  Keyboards  and  slide  guitars  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  vocals  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of  Americana  elements.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  dark  sounding  as  well  as  adding  in  a  lot  of  acoustic  guitars  and  the  songs  also  mix  in  a  lot  of  folk  influences.

  Touches  of  acid,    tech  folk  and  bluegrass  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals  along  with  the  acoustic  guitars  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  finger  picking  and  full  chords.

  

At  times  the  music  also  captures  the  dark  atmosphere  of  black  and  doom  metal  without  ever  adding  in  any  heaviness  or  distorted  instruments  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  psychedelic  moments.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  covers  a  road  trip  through  the  dark  underbelly  of  the  American  Dream.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Xasthur  and  while  some  black  metal  fans  might  not  like  the  new  direction,  I  can  see  this  album  appealing  to  fans  of  neo  folk.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Same  old  Suspects"  "Fairy  Tale  Ideologies"  "Estranged"  and  "Voluntary  Prisoners".  8  out  of  10.

Xasthur/Defective Epitaph/HydraHead Records/2007 CD Review

  Xasthur are a 1 man band from California that plays a very depressive form of ambient black metal and this is a review of their 2007 album "Defective Epitaph" which was released by HydraHead Records.

Drums range from slow to mid paced beats that do get fast at times, while the synths sound very dark and depressive with an ambient and funeral doom feel, as for the bass playing it has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars.

Rhythm guitars range from slow to mid paced depressive black metal riffs that also utilize a lot of influences from dark ambient and funeral doom metal with some occasional fast riffing mixed in with some brief use of full chords on one song and there are little to no guitar solos or leads present on this recording.

Vocals are all high pitched black depressive black metal screams with some occasional Gregorian chants and spoken word passages, while the lyrics cover depressive themes as well as astral projection with a very dark and occultic feel, as for the production it has a very dark and raw feel to it which makes the music sound very depressive and evil.

In my opinion this was a great album from Xasthur, and if you are a fan of this band, you probably already own this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Soulless Energy" "Dehumanizing Procession" "Worship (the War) Against yourself" and "The Only Blood That Purs Is Yours". RECOMMENDED BUY.
