1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?
KALT || WEISS is a mix of Deftones-Cleanvox and Deathspell Omega dissonances with long but concise songs. This of course is simplified but it describes pretty well whats going on.
2.Recently you have released your first ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on the recording?
The main goal was to get a timeless sound and production that does not sound dated and old a few years down the line. This is why i oped for real drums, the subtle variations in the sound keep it fresh over the years, and chose a mixing engineer with a more subdued and less "over the top" style to keep the arrangements breathing. This maybe sounds less impressive on the first 10 seconds but it will hold up a few years down the line.
3.Your lyrics cover sex, drugs and existentialism themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in those topics?
Well, who isn't interested in those topics. The main focus is the themes interplay with coping mechanisms. Almost no one is a biological addict to substances, mostly it's a emotional dependency that later manifests as a biological addiction.
4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Kalt || Weiss'?
Literally translated it means "cold white". I got the name from the Placebo song "In the cold light of morning" and in german the adjective kaltweiss describes a cold blueish hue of white usually radiated by old neon tubes.
5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?
I shot the picture myself. Sometimes there is not a lot of conscious solution finding behind what i do artistically, the setting and picture just had the right vibe. It is sexual but not in a exploitative way but more in a suggestive.
6.You recorded most of the album by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?
Not on this project. In other projects i frequently collaborate with others but KALT || WEISS is definitly 99% my thing, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse.
7.The ep was released on Kvltstick 4000 Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
Truth be told it's just a sham-name for myself. All the streaming services wanted a label name and leaving it empty seemed wrong so i just picked the most absurd name i could think of.
8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and avant garde metal?
If someone reacted it was very positive, but i have not been able to achieve significant reach.
9.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?
Well, i see Serotonin as a full length, it has a runtime of 35mins. It is maybe short for blackmetal terms but not for metal albums in this decade. I cannot say when or if album 2 will come out but a realistic guess would be in 2021 with maybe a few one off tracks through 2020.
10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Chino Morenos cleanvox style was obviously a huge influence, others include Deathspell Omega and other "Dissoblack"-bands like Nightbringer. Der Weg Einer Freiheit are a huge inspiration too. Right now i am listening to Leeched, their new album should be out soon, and Fawn Limbs.
11.What are some of your non musical interests?
Visual Art mostly, of course this goes together with being a musician.
12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Thank you for taking the time. Maybe one thing: try to determine why you like what you like and be honest with yourself if you really like it or if it's just some sort of groupthink forcing you to like what you don't really like.
