Darkat Yuuyamihn/eu sou a vítima e o carrasco/Syrup Moose Records/2024 Full Length Review

Darkat  Yuuyamihn  are  a  solo  project  from  Brazil  that  plays  a  mixture  of   depressive  black  metal,  blackgaze  and  rabm  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2024  album  "eu  sou  a  vítima  e  o  carrasco"  which  will b e  released  in  December  by  Syrup  Moose  Records.

Tragic  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  heavier  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  shoegaze  style.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard.

When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  fast  riffing  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  depressive  black  metal  screams.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  tracks.

Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  riffs  along  with  a  couple  of  songs   also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  female  vocals  as  well  as  some  clean  playing  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Portuguese  and  cover  suicide  and  corruption  themes.

In  my  opinion  Darkat  Yuuyamihn  is  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  depressive  black  metal,  blackgaze  and  rabm  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "No  Vazio"  "Eco  E  Silencio"  "Funeral  Das  Rosas"  and  "Draw  The  Eclipse".  8  out  of  10.

Molag Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Velda - Molag is a raw, vampyric black metal band that I formed in early 2022. Our goal is to make soul crushing black metal and to spread the gospel of Molag. I wanted to show everyone out there that you can make black metal that is both atmospheric AND actually have riffs! On top of that, we ain't no nazi fuckheads either, proving we can break some of the black metal stereotypes.

Hermaeus - The essence of Molag Bal is one of bloodshed and domination. This is an essence we're trying to recapture sonically.

2.So far you have released a full length and ep, musically how do they both differ from each other?

V - For starters, they have different vocalists. Bal, the original singer, was only a guest musician and didn't want to commit full time to the band, which I respect his choices for that. Hermaeus, our new vocalist, is a fully committed member of the band, meaning he doesn't just sit there and do what we tell him to. He introduces new ideas and that's just going to naturally change how we write. His vocal style fits the more doomy atmospheric side of things, and they're not generic at all, so the instrumentals can't be generic black metal either. Metamorphosis Dark was entirely written by myself, music and lyrics and all, so it might seem a bit more consolidated with absolutely no outside input. Into the Saber Winds was a more collaborative effort and required me to change how I'm approaching songwriting. Don't worry though, the goal remains exactly the same, and that's to make the most evil, atmospheric, riff filled blasphemy we can!

H - I had no role in the first full length album. When Velda contacted me about providing vocals for the EP, I agreed immediately. I feel that the collaborative nature of the EP is very apparent.

3.A lot of your lyrics cover Satanism and Vampirism themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

V - Ever since I was a child, I've felt the call of dark forces, whether you want to call that Satan or not is up to you. In my opinion, that doesn't matter. Satan represents a lot to me; rebellion, love, hate, will, and much more. I'm a Thelemite first and foremost. The Vampirism themes came naturally, especially considering our namesake is the lord of vampires! We're far from the first band to mesh these themes together for our aesthetic, but I see it as a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kind of thing. We separate ourselves from most of the pack by actually having riffs anyway.

H - I discovered Crowley at the age of about 14. From there, my interest in the occult grew. Even before that I would often practice rituals of my own. I couldn't tell you where the interest began, however. I've just always had that inclination.

4.You have also mentioned being anti fascist, can you tell us a little bit more about these views?

V - To me, anti-fascism is extremely important. I'm from the Bible belt, and they say familiarity breeds contempt. It sure did for me, Molag stands against Christian theocracy and fascism, both of which thrive down here. It's not exclusive to here, but it's more out and proud. We also want to make it easy for people to know where we stand. We're not some spineless dweebs who sit on the fence about this shit. Whether people like it or not, politics is ever prevalent in all facets of our lives, so you may as well take an actual stand. It never ceases to amaze me how metal fans, particularly black metal fans, think they're some kind of counter-culture and then proceed to support traditionalist Christian values, like bigotry against LGBTQ+ and non-white people, it makes me fucking sick. And these bands claim to be Satanic whilst upholding the current status quo! What a fucking farce.

H - So-called "Satanists" and "Pagans" who believe in the same things as Christian fundamentalists make me laugh. Also being from the deep South has shown me firsthand that these fundamentalists deserve no respect, and I truly can't think of anything more ridiculous than "Satanists" and "Pagans" believing the same things as those they claim to oppose.

5.I know that the band was named after a character in the Elder Scrolls game, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these series?

V - It's no secret that black metal fans are typically nerds at heart. I love RPG's, and Elder Scrolls is no exception. Hell, my other band is called Darkmoon Blade, which is in reference to a Spell in the Dark Souls series. To me, I find this no different than naming your band in reference to Lord of the Rings, the only difference is the medium. You're still finding inspiration in pretty well known stories. Molag Bal, in the Elder Scrolls series, is the closest figure to a "Satan" within that series. And him being the father of Vampirism, as well as being probably the only Daedric lord that you could easily call evil, made total sense. Everything I do as a musician amounts to "painting a picture" of sorts, so the aesthetic is very important. I'd wager it catches the attention of likeminded individuals who love these type of video games as well.

H - The Elder Scrolls was one of the first RPGs to ever connect with me. Oblivion, specifically. I would spend hours locked in my room. Needless to say, I have quite an affinity for it and it continues to be a source of inspiration for me.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork on both album covers?

V - The original cover for Metamorphosis Dark is simply an older picture of myself that was originally for a very, very old black metal project of mine under the name of Morbosus. It never really went anywhere, but I still had all those pictures lying around and it stuck. I felt it didn't really properly represent the album though, and commissioned a friend of mine for a new cover. I wanted the cover to have a sort of nightmarish feel to it, almost intangible in a way, and I felt she nailed it. The cover for Into the Saber Winds was done much in the same way. If I remember correctly, she had arranged an actual skull for the redone cover for Metamorphosis Dark but purposefully changed shapes around to make it less obvious as to what was going on. This way, listeners can gleam their own demons from it.

H- (no answer, Velda summed it up really well!)

7. Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?

V - We have never performed any shows. I'm open to the idea, but simply showing up and playing isn't going to cut it for me. It would have to be an entire ceremony that, truthfully, just isn't sustainable for a new up and coming black metal band with no money. The aesthetic is extremely important to me, and I refuse to half-ass it. There would be fog, blood, and everything else that would appease the Daedric Lord of Domination. That said, eventually I hope to actually be able to pull it off. It wouldn't be a lot of little shows, but fewer BIG shows. And I refuse to do it any other way.

H- As Velda said, our ideal for a live show would be elaborate and expensive. It isn't out of the question for me, either, however.

8. On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

V - It's been a lot better than I thought! I had honestly assumed Molag would've been lost in the sea of ever flooding bands that pop up every 20 seconds. But we've had people tell us they were really loving it! And some hate it! Which is perfectly fine for me, this tells me we're doing something right. Ive no doubt some bootlickers hate that we spread the gospel of Satan while also advocating for issues such as trans rights and black lives. This separates us from the pack and only furthers our resolve. The scene has become too comfortable with bullshit like white supremacy for the longest time.

H - Honestly I'm a little surprised at the level of attention we've been receiving. It's humbling.

9.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

V - I mentioned Darkmoon Blade earlier. That's my more traditional heavy metal focused project. We're currently in the process of recording our follow-up release. And then there's Somat, my black /death band, and we're currently in the process of writing our third album. As you can see, I am in a constant state of writing and recording music. This is why I prefer not playing a lot of shows, so I can focus more of my time on actually writing and recording this music I love.

H - I have a few potential things in the works. Stay tuned for that.

10. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

V - Expect more raw, vampyric black metal! I didn't create Molag to experiment with progressive ideas, I wanted to make evil, atmospheric, riff filled black metal, and that's not changing anytime soon!

H - We're going to continue bringing you riffs and ferocious, bloody black metal.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

V - I listen to a very wide variety of music from metal to gothic country and everything else, though my heart still stays with metal mostly. My favorite artist of all time is King Diamond, which influences everything I do, no matter the project. Celtic Frost is also a massive influence. Some new-ish bands that I've been digging lately are Zatyr, Ashbreather, Bewitcher, Hellripper, and Heavenfield (shout to Severin from that band, dude is a phenomenal artist).

H - Summoning are probably my single biggest influence; the first time I heard Old Mornings Dawn, I knew I NEEDED to make music. Otherwise, Sigh, Till, Hekseblad, Ungfell, and Saidan have been in heavy rotation for me.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

V- Keep your ears out, our sophomore album is coming soon, titled Orgies in the Vatican of the Blood Lusted Lords! This will be our first album featuring a new member as well, and returning vocals from Hermaeus! From yours truly from the Bible Belt, Fuck the Fash and Hail Molag!

H - Gatekeep black metal; keep our scene free of fascist scum.

A Plague Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has  been going on with the musical project since the recording and release of the new ep?

Al: A///Plague has been active since 2018. I released some Eps, single and one full album on CD named "Xawara" in 2021 on a collab among several independent  labels from Brazil. I try to be always active and producing some art, playing some gigs and writing new songs. I have two new songs almost ready to record the end of this year.

2.Recently you have released a new ep, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Al: I think I' m writing better songs nowadays and I also play better.I found my way to play black metal mixing some elements from another music styles I love.

3.So far all of your releases been demo's and ep's, are there any plans for a full length in the future?

Al: I put out one full album in 2021. "Xawara" was a compilation of older songs released only digitally and two new ones. I have plans to release another full next year on the same way, I mean, mixing old songs and new ones.

People has no much time to stop and listen to the music today. It' s pretty difficult somebody who listen tp a whole album. So, that's one of the reasons I prefer to release EPs. And I'm too slow to write songs.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects that you explore with the newer music and also how would you describer your progress as as songwriter over the years?

Al: Like I said before I think I found my way to write BM and I' m a best musician and songwriter today.

The lyrics are the way I use to express my feelings, my ideals. I try to talk about anything I guess important such as : environmental struggle, against prejudices, antifascism and anticapitalism but sometimes I like to write about personal experiences, about solitude or even something more spiritual.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'A Plague'?

Al: I 'm a big fan of Chelsea Wolfe . She is an inspiration for me and I took the name A Plague from the chorus of one of her song, " Carrion Flowers".

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

Al: I love art in general and especially photographs. Aling these years I've always tried to use some different languages to release the artwork and this time I decided to be the model and presented my idea for the producer of the EP, João Gilberto and we make the photo.

7.The band started out as a solo project but has recently expanded  into a duo, what was the decision behind bringing in another member?

Al: In deed A///Plague still is a one man band.

I don't play drums so I use to invite some close friends to record what I write. And for the next one I'll invite one great friend of mine to play bass.

A///Plague is about me and my ideals, my passion and my demons. There's no sense in becoming a band, in my point of view.

8.The band is heavily associated with antifa a movement that some black metal fans that are not really into nsbm trust, due to shows being cancelled and getting blamed for being nazi's when they consider themselves apolitical, how strong is this movement in black metal these days and what separates antifa black metal from rabm?

Al: I came from punk DIY scene. I played on one od the first grindcore bands in Brazil in the early 90's. I pretty evolved into political and social movements, anarchist ones especially. I always love the obscurity and spiritual art that came from BLack Metal but not the prejudices and far- right ideas the mainstream bands propage. There are tons of people like me all around the world. When I discovered RABM I got so f**** happy because it's an alternative.

There are many great artists and people who have evolved into RABM community. This is a safe place for everyone, for minorities, etc.

To be antifa is an attitude and RABM is a community. An alternative against all the prejudice some nazi scum minds are preaching.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal

Al: I have friends everywhere around the world and I am glad about it. My art has been well received along these years.

10.What is going on with the other musical projects these days that you are a part of?

Al: I also play guitars and vocals on Void Me, another RABM band. It's a duo where Darlene is my bandmate. We're finish our new record to release one more split album.

11.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

Al: I really don't know . I want to keep on writing my songs without managers, big record labels, you know. I want to keep on making friends instead of fans and keep on spreading my art and my ideals.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that you are currently listening to nowadays?

Al: I listen to so many different music styles : from neo soul, 80s pop until grindcore.I love music. Everything has some kind of impact on me when I'll write.

But I' m happy to say there are so many awesome bands in the RABM community.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Al: I'd like to thank you for your support and everyone who took the time to read my words.

Get in contact and let's spread the Plague .

We are not alone. We are everywhere.

Vurdala'ka Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the solo project?

Vurdala’ka is the child of my love for two very formative genres in my musical trajectory, each coming at a different point in my life. Essentially I wanted to fuse neoclassical darkwave, which I got into around 10 years ago when I was just starting to create consistently, with the whole vampyric/raw black metal thing that came to me later, when I was much more well-versed in dark and extreme music. It’s one of my more well-thought out projects, but I love to revel in the drama and over the top nature of it.

2.So far with this project you have released 3 ep's, musically how do they differ from each other?

I’d say they build off each other, in a way. The first one was very minimal, with a few neoclassical segments and a more primitive, but still goth-y sound, while the second one adds more melody, keyboards and proper orchestrations. The third one, to me, is the logical endpoint for that evolution, as it’s essentially all symphonic and even features a song (Angels of the Night) that’s gothic metal with raw black metal being just the presentation format. Unintentionally, the themes have also become a bit more personal with each release, since the second EP saw me embracing femininity a lot more and the third one included a literal LGGBTQ+ allegory and features clean, female vocals, which is significant to me.

3.Some of your lyrics cover Satanism, Vampirism and Occultism, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

Ever since I was a child I’ve been interested in demonology, the occult and darkness in general, partly because of my father, who’s a pretty sacrilegious and eclectic christian, but also because in Catalan speaking areas, subjects like the Devil, Death, sex and shit are traditionally a bit less taboo than other places of the christian world, and a certain degree of blasphemy is and was pretty rampant in some places. With that predisposition, I sort of fell into a pipeline that was only made deeper by my interest in gothic related art, subcultures and themes. I’d still call myself a satanist, in a way, but honestly I mostly just care about vibes, aesthetics and ideas in my day to day. I don't really believe in anything.

4.With the new ep you also mentioned an interest in the writings of Goethe, Mary Shelly and Bram Stoker, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in their writings?

Again, it’s all my love for darkness. The Romantic era of art has always been a great inspiration for me, whether it’s musically, aesthetically or thematically. As a teenager I was reading Poe, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and Charles Maturin, to name a few, so when I got a copy of Dracula in Catalan, I had to buy it, same with an edition of Faust with illustrations by Harry Clarke. I need the aesthetic in my life. Honestly, my dream is to look like the kind of woman that would simultaneously allure and terrify a closet bisexual Victorian occultist (regardless of their gender). I’m 100% serious.

5.You also cover ant nazi and nsbm themes, how would you describe your left wing views?

I would describe myself as an anarchist, more specifically ancom I guess, but I’m generally open to other leftist schools of thought, as I think their ideas hold value. My ideal world is self-governed, interconnected small communities that use an assembly model and make use of modern technology and science for the betterment of humanity as a whole, without fully dismissing culture (which is a trap some leftists fall into). I’m also pretty invested in the deconstruction and re-analysis of gender and sexuality, since I have quite a bit of experience with the subject. A lot has changed since the days of Marx and Kropotkin, so we must adapt and grow ideologically to properly keep up.

6.You also do a good amount of solo projects, what is it that you bring into the music of Vurdala'ka that would not fit in with your other projects?

Whenever I start a project is because I want to play a certain genre, or within a common aesthetic. Whatever I enjoy listening to, I want to make. If you look around my projects, while some similarities are bound to occur, especially since many are black metal related, I cover different music styles and subgenres, as well as different aesthetic and artistic choices. To summarize, Vurdala’ka is simply an outlet for my love of raw black metal, neoclassical darkwave and vampiric/dark romantic aesthetics. It’s that simple.

7.I know that the band's name means 'vampire' in Slavic, how does this name fit in with the musical style that you play?

The gothic element of my music, even from its most primitive start, is inescapable to me. Gothic music means gothic aesthetics, which means gothic literature, which often means vampires and there’s no easier target than slavic regions for the stereotypical vampire aesthetic, since Eastern Europe is a bit of a treasure trove of lore and legends. I could not imagine making a project that mixes my love for all the things I mentioned previously without at least referencing it. If you look at the pseudonym I use on the project, Vrolok Strigoi Drakul von Pokol, it’s just a jumble of random Slavic words I found at the beginning of Dracula. Same with the project itself, with Vurdala’ka coming from Tolstoy’s La Famille du Vourdalak. It’s all references.

8.With all of your projects you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musician's or do you prefer to work solo?

I do prefer to work on my own, since it provides a great deal of creative freedom and the ability to spend as much or as little time as I feel like on each project. However, I do work with other people on occasion since, besides collabs, I play in a post-black band called The Darkness of Mankind and in the symphonic power/melodeath/whatever band Keepers of the Rainbow, as well as having been part of bands before (all ending pretty badly ngl).

9.In the last few years you have released a great amount of material with your projects, do you spend a great amount of time writing and creating music?

I used to work in sudden spurts of a couple days to a week on a release, so I made a decent amount of albums and EPs in a short amount of time, but in the latter half of 2022 I hit a stump due to various personal issues and some projects taking a bit more time than I’m used to, so I haven’t worked on much lately. I am trying to get back into the groove of it though.

10.On a worldwide level, how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

I’m not entirely sure, since there aren’t many reviews around and I don’t have many interactions with fans or other artists (shout out to Lust Hag), but so far I‘ve been pleasantly surprised with how quickly some people came to the project. To be fair, I’m still a really minor artist (all my projects are pretty small), so I think it’s normal to not be talked about much.

11.What is going on with your other musical projects these days?

Currently I’m waiting on the mix of an album from my Elder Scrolls themed war metal project Lord Sithis, on the 27th I’m releasing a 15 min black ambient track with Ísfjall, I’m currently working on a noise album for Phenka and we’re recording the last clean vocals for Keepers of the Rainbow. I also plan to start playing live with Keepers and Lord Sithis, as well as noise shows under my real name, which is Samael Boix. I do plan on working on more things again, but I don’t really know what’s coming yet.

12.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

Honestly, no idea. I’m working on a split at the moment and I have plans for a slightly bigger endeavor, but a full length proper is something that only happens naturally for me. Basically, I stop working on a release when I feel it’s done regardless of length.

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

There’s too many to count, since I like way too many things and even more if I get to mix them. For Vurdala’ka I’ll say Adrian Von Ziegler, Nox Arcana, Mutiilation, Striborg, Bauhaus, My Dying Bride, Cradle of Filth, Vampirska, Amargor, early Ulver, Christian Death, HIM and many, many more have been extremely formative when creating and evolving my sound. As for listening, I’ve been really into the more melodic and/or fun side of raw black, especially the whole Grime Stone Records scene, but I’ve also been on and off with war metal, noise, various electronic genres, power metal, extreme metal styles with ‘core influences and Japanese versions of many metal genres.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I’d like to shout out my partner, Eleanor (aka. Lust Hag), Bariann from Fiadh Productions, all the handsome boys from the Barcelona black metal underground that I’ve talked to, anyone who has ever worked (and not gone to shit) with me and anyone who has ever supported me, whether it’s economically, by listening, sharing, interacting with me or just sent encouraging words my way. I wouldn’t be here without them. This scene needs more good people at its forefront

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  compilation  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  synths  are  also  added  on  a  lot  of  the  tracks.

When  guitar  solo  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  ambient  orientated  instrumentals,  growls  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  promo  also  brings  in  more  of  a  rawer  and  old  school  approach  than  the  demo  and  one  track  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Vampirization  and  Solitude  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Lust  Hag  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw,  lo-fi  ant  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Impenetrable  Castle  Walls"  "Weary  Traveler  Bit  With  Vasmpyric  Fang"  "Undone"  and  "Path  Of  Suffering".  8  out  of  10.
