Morkesagn Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
Hail everyone! Farn and Ekvil from Morkesagn are here!
Ekvil: The band was formed in Kyiv (Ukraine) in 2013. I am the founder of the band and author of music/lyrics, but all band members play an important role in our creative process. Our music is closest to Melodic Black Metal with a little influence of Death/Doom Metal.

2.Recently you have released an album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
Farn: It is the amalgamation of classical black metal sound with characteristic fast blastbeats and solid aggressive guitar riffs and melodic solos with smooth, delayed sound, sometimes with synth in background, acoustic breakdowns, and atmospheric sound.
Ekvil:  We have been looking for the "golden ratio" between powerful legible sound and rawness. I hope we got it.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Ekvil: We tried to create a dark mystic atmosphere of Underworld with its rivers of lava, gloomy vaults of caverns and hordes of daemonic creatures inside.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Morkesagn'?
Ekvil: It can be translated from Norwegian as "Dark Legends". The legends which we provide to our listeners by our music.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Farn: We mostly performed in small Kiev clubs. Took part in a couple of Ukrainian open-air festivals. The release of our first album stimulated us to work more on this.
Ekvil: I think our best live shows are in future. We really like to interact with fans on concerts; it is an inseparable part of our creative process. We always try to do our best to see more headbanging, slamming and circlepits under the stage.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
Farn: We are planning to visit several European countries as a part of Merdumgiriz label tour during the next summer. Nothing concrete for now, it is still very much a work in progress.

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the deal you have signed with 'Merdumgiriz'?
Farn: Merdumgiriz is a small ‘guerilla’ label that contacted us after I started the promotion campaign for our first album and had a release plan. We signed a deal and all our stuff will be produced and signed by two separate labels: Merdumgiriz label and my own Farn Black Productions label. Everything made by Merdumgiriz is handmade, they do handpainted discs and cassettes, custom t-shirt art etc. I think this partnership is going to turn into something interesting.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
Farn: We get a lot of messages on FB; many people like our music and waiting for the physical release to buy a CD. The most active fans are from India, South America….

9.Are any of the band members also involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?
Ekvil: Currently, bassist Heydvald also plays in thrash/black band Stormride, Farn plays in thrash band Sichgart and our drummer plays in sympho-black band Ungoliantha.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Ekvil: We are going to play more Black Metal for you! More grim streams of darkness flowing into your hearts.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Ekvil: I listen to different metal styles from heavy to brutal death metal. In black metal I prefer bands like Emperor, Watain, Satyricon, Dark Fortress, Dissection, Valkyrja and a lot of others. Legion of them!
Farn: Ekvil told that he was inspired by the soundtrack for “Conan the Barbarian” and took one melody from it XD. Actually, metal is not the only music we listen to and are inspired by. As for me, besides black, I like slow and evil music that makes a feeling of cold pure darkness erupting from you. I also like eastern influence in metal music and some styles of eastern music. Like ambient music a lot. Some random bands from my playlist: Nahemoth, Narjahanam, Septic Flesh, Behemoth, Hate, Cryobiosis, Wardruna…

12.Does Satanism and Occultism play any role in your music?
Farn: No -isms in our music. Our lyrics is based on mythology and Ekvil’s own vision of other worlds…
Ekvil: …Our mind is a really great powerful thing, that can create and destroy whole Universes and make you a Godlike Master of them!

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Think, create, listen to Black Metal and let your souls forever burn!

Morkesagn/Where The Darkness Never Ends/2015 Full Length Review

Morkesagn  are  a  band  from  Ukraine  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of their  self  released  2015  album  "Where  The  Darkness  Never  Ends".

Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  leads  becoming  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  leads  up  to  a  very  fast  and r aw  black  metal  sound  that  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  grim  yet  high  pitched  screams  and  you can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.

A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  you  can  also  hear  clean  singing  being  utilized  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  music  also brings  in  a  very  dark  atmosphere  that  is  very  heavily  influenced  by  Swedish  black  metal  and  you  can  also  hear  a  lot  of  90's  second  wave  influences  in  the  bands  musical  style  and  as  the  album progresses  grim  whispers  can  be  heard  at  times  and  clean  playing  also  makes  a  return  in  some  of  the  later  tracks  and  the  album closes  with  an  instrumental.

Morkesagn  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  dark,  raw  and  melodic  and  owes  a  great  deal  to  the  Swedish  style  of  the  genre,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  doom,  mysticism  and  winter  themes.

In  my  opinion  Morkesagn  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  melodic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Heart  Of  Darkness"  and  "Frost".  8  out  of  10.
