Wormlight/Nightmother/Black Lion Records/2021 CD Review

Sweden's  Wormlight  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  aggressive  and  melodic  style  of  occult  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Nightmother"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Black  Lion  Records.

A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  some  synths  also  being  utilized  at  times.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

Most  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  90's  Swedish  style  while  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  deep  growls.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  balance  between  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  a  couple  of  the  songs  also  introducing  acoustic  guitars  and  clean  playing  onto  the  album,  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  music  also has  its  symphonic  moments.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  evocation  of  spirits  from  nine  worlds,  eleven  spheres,  crooked  angles  and  four  alchemical  conduit  worlds.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Wormlight  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  aggressive  and  melodic  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Nightmother"  "Voidspawn"  Aeon  Of  the  Wolves"  and  "By  Empty  Cradles".  8  out  of  10.

Wormlight/Wrath Of The Wilds/Black Lion Records/2018 CD Review

Wormlight  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  raw  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  :Wrath  Of  The  Wilds'  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Black  Lion  Records.

Heavy  yet  melodic  riffing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  faster  sections  of t he  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to t hem  and  there  are  also  a  few  tracks  that  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  music  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  90's  Swedish  style  and  on  one  of  the  tracks  acoustic  guitars,  keyboards  and  spoken  word  parts  are  also  introduced  on  the  recording  briefly  and  when  melodic  chants  are  utilized  on  a  later  track  they  give  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling.

Wormlight  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  raw  and  melodic  black  metal  style  from  their  previous  release,  the  production  sounds  very  professional while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and occultism  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Wormlight  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  melodic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  Reptillian  King"  "On  Tattered  Wings"  and  "Feast  Pf  The  Mountain  Kin".  8  out  of  10.

Wormlight Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Wormlight is a melodic black metal band from Sweden formed in 2014. By King Antichrist and Deafeathered.Soon Lator Mortis joined them and they recorded and released their first demo/Ep "An Ancient Enemy" that same year. Shortly after the release Arktos joined the band. After some major changes in the band I joined in time for the recording of the "Bloodfields" Ep. After the recording of the Ep Nordlyst left the band and I took up the vocals as well.

2.So far you have released 2 ep's, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on both of the recordings?

The first Ep ”An Ancient Enemy”  was a “no-budget” recording that served its purpose to give form to shapeless ideas and to give the band an identity.
“The Bloodfields” was recorded in a studio, which gives the Ep a different sound quality and character compared to the first. The re-recording of “The Bloodfields” was a result of big changes within the band, yet it serves as a transition. The tracks “Pitch black hatred” and “Towards Impious Domination” can be seen as the death of Unhallowed , as the “Wormlight” and “The Bloodfields” can be seen as the birth of Wormlight. And with this rebirth the lyrical themes and visions for the band has seen some changes.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

On “An Ancient Enemy” the lyrical theme was more centered on Anti Christianity and Devil worship. On “Bloodfields” the transition to the themes surrounding death and the anti-cosmic begun. An essence that will permeate the coming albums, even when the lyrical theme itself may take the focus elsewhere. The next album will primarily focus on some of the creatures of the old Norse mythology and folklore.

4.Originally the band was called 'Unhallowed', what was the cause of the name change and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Wormlight'?

In 2015 when I joined the band after Deafeathered's departure, there were already plans for the recording of the Bloodfields Ep. And we entered the studio shortly after. Some time later Nordlyst chose to depart, and i took the role of vocalist as well as guitar. This left us with a new band structure, influences and sound. A name change came natural to represent this rebirth.
The name itself symbolises the death, eating away the blind eye of man, so that you may once again see far beyond the false light and stare into the void.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

The best show we have had so far is the most reason one. The show we played to celebrate the re-release of our EP and its physical release on the third of December together with some other acts at "Klubb:Fördärv" with sold out tickets.
The performance acts as a threshold. It is best experienced at the shows.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

We have some shows planned for next year. But since we are in the middle of recording our full length album, and just finished the work with the bloodfields, we try to put all our energy into the album.

7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to you music by fans of black metal?

I have gotten positive feedback from those attending the shows, especially on the new  material. And the reviews for the “Bloodfields” Ep that we just released worldwide has been great so far.

8.When can we expect a full length album and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

As I stated earlier, we are recording the album at the moment and it will be released in 2017, that much I know. We have performed some of the material live, so a taste of the album can be heard online.
The upcoming album has been written by me from the start to the end, which gives it a consistent sound all the way throughout the record. The album will contain heavier and faster tracks,  As well as slower, more melodic parts than before. My voice will change the atmosphere of the vocals, which will affect the interpretation of the sound, yet the essence of the sound remains. We are working on new material for the future and are always planning ahead. But for now all our focus are on the completion of the full lenght album set for release in 2017.

9.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Dissection and Behemoth have been the biggest influences for me of all the bands out there. I have always been drawn to black metal and bands like Ofermod, Watain, Fides Invesa,Funeral Mist, and so on. Lately I've been listening a lot to Summoning.

10.How would you describe your views on Paganism and Anti Christianity?

Paganism has always been an interesting subject to me. Especially the Norse and Hellenistic religions with its gods, creatures and magic of old. The Chaos-Gnosticism being the foundation of my studies together with the anti-cosmic Satanism, the doorway to the mysteries of the creation of the true Norse gods is open. The occult studies takes you to the most far out corners of all that is known and unknown. So the defiance towards the sole creator that the word "pagan" represents, is indeed important to me.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

Most of my spare time evolves around music in some way, either i play, compose or listens to music. Or I am reading a lot of books to find inspiration for lyrics. Since I also write music and lyrics for my other band Sons Ov Omega, music is given most of my time.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We will play a show in Umeå on the 18th of February as support for the release of Sons Ov Omega's debut album. Keep a lookout for the next Wormlight album. The title of the album

Wormlight/Bloodfields/Black Lion Productions/2016 EP Re-Issue Review

Wormlight  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  ep  "Bloodfields"  which  will  be  re-issued  in  December  of  2016 by  Black  Lion  Productions.

A very heavy  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  blast  beats,  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams  a few  seconds  later  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  Swedish  style  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  bring  in  single  note  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  synths  are  also  added  onto  a  couple  of  songs  while  the  main  focus  remains  more  on a   heavier  and  melodic  style  and  on  one  of  the  tracks  melodic  chants  can  be  heard  in  the  background.

Wormlight  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  aggressive  and  melodic  in  the  Swedish  tradition, the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes  with  a  touch  of  Nordic  Mythology.

In  my  opinion  Wormlight  are  a  very  great  sounding  fast,  aggressive  and  melodic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Pitch  Black  Hatred"  and  "The  Bloodfields".  8  out of  10.
