Krolok/Hričov-Súľov-Lietava/Osmose Productions/2026 Full Length Review

  Slovakia's  Krolok  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  and  old  school  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  album  "Hričov-Súľov-Lietava"  which  will b e  released  in  September  by  Osmose  Productions.

  Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Atmospheric  sounding  synths  are  also  utilized  at  times  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and    both  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording..

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a raw  feeling.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal s creams  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  old  school  era  of  the  genre  and  clear  vocals  are  also  used  at  times.

  Throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style,  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  at  times  as  well  as  a  couple  of  tracks  also  being  instrumentals,  one  song  also  adds  clear  singing  into  the  background  and  as  the  recording  progresses  folk  instruments  are  also  introduced.  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Slovakian  and  cover  the  ancient  legends  and  mysterious  history  of  their  homeland.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Krolok  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of a tmospheric  and  old  school  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hričov"  and  "Lietava".  8  out  of  10.

Krolok/Funeral Winds & Crimson Sky/Osmose Productions/2021 Full Length Review

 

  Krolok  are  a  band  from  Slovakia  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  old  school  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Funeral  Winds  &  Crimson  Sky"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  Osmose  Productions. 

  Horror  movie  style  keyboards  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  recording  also  mixing  in  a  great  amount  of  second  wave  era  influences.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  some  dark  sounding  melodies  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  along  with  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  also  showing  an  influence  of  80's  metal  at  times  as w ell  as  one  of  the  tracks  being  an  instrumental  and  also  introducing  acoustic  guitars  onto  the  recording,  melodic  chants  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Folklore,  Darkness  and  Nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Krolok  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Black  Lore  Of  The  Fens"  and  "Unveiled  Subterranean  Treasures'.  8  out  of  10.

Krolok/When The Moon Sang Our Songs/Inferna Profundus Records/2018 Demo Re-Issue Review

  Krolok  are  a  band  from  Slovakia  that  plays  a  very  old  school  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  demo  "When  The  Moon  Sang  Our  Songs"  which  will be  re-issued  on  April  13th  in  2018  by  Inferna  Profundus  Records.

  A  very  dark  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  samples  from "The  Omen"  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  while  the  keyboards  enhance  the  lo-fi  atmosphere.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  riffing  also  bringing  in a   decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  as  well  as  some  clean  playing  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  they  also  bring  in  a  cover  of  Carpathian  Forest's  "When  Thousand  Moons  Have  Circled".

 When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  and  melodic  fashion,  while  all  of  the  music  also  sounds  like  it  could  of  easily  been  recorded  and  released  in  the  90's  along  with  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  closing  track  is  done  in  more  of  a  ritualistic  and  dark  ambient  style.

  Krolok  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  atmospheric  in  the  90's  style,  the  production  sounds  very  dark,  raw  and  lo-fi  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature,  personal  feelings,  vampires  and  night  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Krolok  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school,  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ride  A  Roan  Stead"  and  "The  Violet  Castle  In  The  Sky".  8/5  out  of  10.
