Alkerdeel/A Den Of Robbers/CM Kamp 1996/Horion Jugend/ConSouling Sounds/2012 Split Album Review

This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Belgium's  Alkerdeel  and  A  Den Of Robbers  called  "CM  Kamp  1996/Horion  Jugend"  which  was  released  by  ConSouling  Sounds  in  2012  and  we  will start  of  the  review  with  Alkerdeel  a  band  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical style  that  mixes  raw  and  primitive  sounding  black  metal  with  sludge  and  doom  metal.

Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the  music  at  times,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  their  side  of  the  recording.

Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  raw  and  primitive  sounding  black  metal  with  sludge  and  doom  metal  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording.

Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  which  have  a very  depressive  tone  to  them a t  times  along  with  some  deep  growls  and  spoken  word  parts,  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Belgian  and  cover  dark  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it  while  you  can  still  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on t heir  side  of  the  recording.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from Alkerdeel  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  primitive  black  metal  and  sludge,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Veiller  De  Nuit  Noir".  RECOMMENDED.

Next  up  is  A  Den  Of  Robbers  a  band  that  mixes  sludge  with  grindcore.

Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  a  good  amount  of  blast  beats  being  present  on  this  recording,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very   strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  their  side  of  the  recording.

Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  sludge  with  grindcore  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  along  with  some  black  metal  influences  in  the  riffing  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording

Vocals  are  all  high  pitched  grindcore/sludge  screams,  while  the  lyrics  cover  everyday  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  heavy,  raw  and  primitive  sound  while  you  can  still  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording.

In  my  opinion  A  Den  Of  Robbers  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  sludge  and  grindcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Bob  Larsen"  and  "Plagues".  RECOMMENDED.

In  conclusion  I  feel t his  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal,  sludge,  and  grindcore  you  should  add  this  album  to  your  collection.  RECOMMENDED  BUY..

Burialkult Interview

Interview for (occult black metal zine)
Phlegathon Ov Burialkult

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
We are in the midst of the release for A Call From Beyond the Grave and writing new material for another release.   We've just recently gone though a major line up change as well.  New guitars and drummer, pretty crazy actually but we're still solid as fuck and we rise above this challenge.  At this time Burialkult is planning new live rituals and preparing for future conquests as well.  A lot seems to be happening all it once.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs from previous releases?
With this album we decidedly took a departure from what we were doing on the Evil Antichrist Hordes EP.  I think speaking in terms of tonality the EP was much more black-death than what we are doing now.  I think the seeds were growing even back then for what we are now in regards to musical content.  We've achieved a more rock influenced sound on this new album that I think people will really like.  More black metal in spirit, darker and colder.  We're not trying to out do our previous offering or anything like that though we're just doing what we want to do without any borders or preconceived notions.

3.The lyrical topics cover a lot of Satanic and Occult themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your left hand path philosophy?
Yes. For me there is no finite relation ship with Satan.  For he is a master who entertains many.  When we are reaching for intellectual knowledge it is filtered through a great number of categories that offer a greater understanding of occult and magical concept.   There are numerous forms of Satanism that all lead to one place.  Antinomianism, contemplation, autonomy and god hood.  How does it matter that we as humans achieve this? It just matters that we can and that there are spiritual forces out there that can facilitate these changes in our selves.  I could probably go into this for some time but that about covers the basics i think…

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
Black magic, violence, darkness and total chaos.  The unknown and unknowable.  The incalculable abyss and mysteries of death.  This is what Burialkult is and what we represent though our music, lyrical content and art.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
It is hard for me to gage one show from another.  Each show we play is always different from the next as each ritual is different from the next, focusing on different energies that may be present.  Our approach to a live ritual is that of the black mass.  Bones and blood, acrid incense and the shimmer of flame.  A Burialkult Offertorium is a dark and bestial expression of our true nature.

6. Do you have any touring plans for the new release?
There are things in the works for many live appearances.  We are playing a local show for our CD release very soon.  Shortly after that we will be doing a mini-tour.  There are other things in the fire but we shall see how they pan out before I go into details.

7. The new album came out on Blood Harvest Records, how did you get in contact with this label and how would you describe the support they have given you so far?
I've been a fan of Blood harvest records for years.  Rodrigo has consistently put out quality bands and quality releases.  I first got in touch with Bloodharvest because I wanted to release our EP though a solid European label with good distribution.  Blood harvest mostly deals with KULT vinyl releases and I wanted our EP in vinyl format for our first official release.

8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
I think really good actually.  In the grand scheme of things Burialkult is a very young band.  That being said, a lot of a band success rides on illicit promotion and constant work, refining your selves artistically and musically.  There is an enormous black metal scene and it's growing everyday.  I think it can be very hard to get your band noticed because of over saturation these days.  Once your name gets out there and noticed you have to fucking make sure it stays out there!  The road traveled by Burialkult is a long one indeed and we have a long ways to go before our black vision is realized.

9. What is going on with the drummer's other musical projects these days?
Kriegs Other musical projects include Heidenland and Might. Both of these projects are with Havoque of fluisterwoud fame. They finished recording the drums for a new Heidenland album. Havoque has been busy recording guitars and vocals for a release as well. Expect it to be complete in the next few months.

10. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
I think this current path that Burialkult is on is the path that best reflects our art form at present.  I see us expanding on our current style which is inevitable as we are now writing with a new guitar player "Kain".  New energies will manifest them selves in our music as we continue and progress.  I genuinely look forward to that.  It will only get blacker and darker as well we progress.

11. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
I'm not really influenced by anything new right now.  I've been listening to some newer bands lately though which is great because I usually don't have much time to discover new bands.  I really like Cult of fire's new album.  Super fucking catchy and well written…  I always go back to the classics though… Bathory,  Hell Hammer, early Samael, Celtic Frost etc…  I find my self listening to rock n roll bands like The Cult lately as well as a lot of 70's Coven, even Early Jefferson Airplane.  Simple vintage rock n roll!  In retrospect I guess a lot of the influence on our new album comes directly from the afore mentioned bands.  Some times you find influence where you least expect it.

12. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
I enjoy exploring the mysteries of black magic and the occult.  Reading new books when time permits as well as drinking alcohol when the occasion presents its self.  I try to spend time writing when I can.  I am an eccentric who likes to collect old things like antiques and what not as I find anything new worthless and without artistry and depth.  Music is 90% of my passion and it encompasses most of my life.  I don't know what I would do if that was taken away from me?  I'd probably resort to crime haha.

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Absolutely. I would say thank you for the interview and the chance to promote A Call From Beyond the Grave. It will be available though Bloodharvest records respectively as well as most everywhere else as of May10th.  You can track our movement via our F/B site as well as the Bloodharvest home page we now have "burialkult.com" as well but haven't actually done anything with it yet.  Hail the four crowned princes of hell! Hail Satan!

Hunter's Ground Interview

Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?
Hunter’s Ground is a ritual music project based in and around the Appalachian bioregion of these so-called “United States of America.”
How would you describe your musical sound?
Our surface sound is certainly within the realm of the black metal genre, but we have grown organically from that root. Our music is ritual: Hunter’s Ground is not a band, it is an invocation. Each composition is a Song of Power used to bring about the growing storm.
What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Our lyrical concepts weave a new mythology of what is now known as the North American landscape- its flora and fauna, its past and its future. As sons of this land, we are constantly involved, through the living of our lives, in the re-telling of the ever-true myths of creation, destruction and rebirth. We choose to take an active role in this re-telling through the entity of Hunter’s Ground, to be active participants in a growing mythos that we sing into existence.
What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
It is meant as a primal name for the land on which we live, and a call to a more Pure form of existence.
What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
We find ourselves at our best in the surroundings we are most comfortable in: outdoor shows have been most memorable and satisfying. Savage. Primitive. Untamed. Proud.
Do you have any touring plans for the future?
Yes, we have solidified a new line-up and have plans to be on the road as much as possible this year.
On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
The reviews and feedback for our latest album “No God But the Wild” have been extremely positive on all fronts. We hope to record a new EP this Summer, with plans for a new full-length to be written in the Fall/Winter of 2013.
Are there any other musical projects going on these days?
Some of our members are also in other musical projects, yes. For myself, Hunter’s Ground is my main and only focus- to pour energy elsewhere would be to weaken the growth of the branches.
What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
Impossible to say where things will go…we try to remain fluid and experimental, driven by whatever is speaking through us at the time. Entheogenic work, ritual, and time spent in the wilderness have a strong effect on the music being written.
. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Of course, we are all influenced by the classic BM bands, to mention them here would probably be a waste of everyone’s time; also, we are heavily influenced by the indigenous music of many cultures, the language of the rocks and trees, beast and bird.
How would you describe your views on Occultism?
This is an extremely broad question, not one I am certain how to answer in the scope of this brief interview. My personal praxis is far-reaching and much-encompassing, although my roots have always run deep into the northern traditions of runagaldr, seidh, gandreidh and so on. Perhaps a more precise line of questioning on this would be helpful.
Outside of music what are some of your interests?
The Wolves of Vinland. The Galdragildi. The Centurion Method. Keeping a lean body, a sharp mind, and Streaming Sunward.
. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Thank you for the interview. We are here in the woods howling songs of savage destruction and Green overgrowing the Grey.

Avulse  are  a  1  man  band  from  Maine  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical style  that  combines  raw  and  primitive  sounding  black  metal  with  d  beat  and  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "We  Are  All  Code"  which  was  released  by  Broken  Limb  Recordings.

Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  raw  and  primitive  sounding  black  metal  with  d  beat  and  crust  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  with  some  melodic  riffing,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  old  school  sounding  punk  rock  guitar  solos  and  leads.

Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  clean  singing  punk  rock  vocals  being  used  on  one  song,  while  the  lyrics  cover  reality  and  everyday  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it  in  the  true  old  school  black  metal  tradition.

In  my  opinion  this  another  great  recording  from  Avulse  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  punk  influenced  primitive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Flames  Of  Liberty"  "Veteran's  Day"  "Black  Denim"  and  "We  Are  All  Code".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Agrath Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?
1. Well, Agrath was formed in 2004 by myself (Lord Thammuz), our current bass player (Black Spectrum), and Vrykolakas our drummer back then. We play nasty raw black metal, and we all currently live in NYC. We have three demos out, a full-length album entitled 'The Fall of Mankind' which was released in 2009, and we recently recorded our second full-length to come out later this year entitled 'Thy Kingdom Come'. Also we have a split with the band Mortum from NJ.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?
2. We're mostly inspired by Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger, Under a Funeral Moon era, adding our own kind of sound keeping it raw and heavy. All that can be expected is pure armageddon.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
3. Agrath's lyrics are misanthropic, hatred towards society, and humanity in general; the coming of eternal darkness & chaos, and some spells dedicated to the Demoness Agrath.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
4. Agrath is the name of a female Demon on Hebrew mythology, and according to the Talmud the wife of Asmodeus king of all Demons.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
5. Let's see, so far we've played shows with bands such as Inquisition, Destroyer 666, Summon, Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, Negative Plane (myself, and our current drummer play on it as well), amongst others, and local bands obviously.

6. Do you have any tour or show plans for the future?
6. We have a show coming up for the end of May, we'll be performing with Deiphago from Phillipines whom will be playing at this year's MDF. No tour plans at this moment.

7. Recently Horizon Productions released a split with Mortum, what are your thoughts on the final product and also what is your opinion on the other band that participated?
7. Our side of the split consists of one of our demos called 'Kreation Destroyed' which was recorded live at our den back in 2007. We're satisfied with the final output of the split, and as for Mortum they're really great guys, and their hymns dark as fuck, really great stuff. We still have yet to share stage with them. Hopefully anytime soon.

8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
8. Overall I think it's been good, we're still an unknown band, we play for the few masses that enjoy orthodox hateful black metal, and we'll keep doing it as long as we stay together. We've received positive feedback from some parts around the globe, and have a nice fanbase in South America, we've received a few reviews from fanzines in Asia, South America, and Poland, so I can't complain about it.

9. What is going on with the other musical projects these days?
9. Our bass player, and drummer (Ignotus) are currently working on a project called Ominous Resurrection which I recommend 666%, darkened atmospheric black metal with no shitty keyboards, only darkness at it's purest. As for Negative Plane we'll be doing a couple a shows later this year in Europe, one is in Prague (Prague Death Mass Vol. II), and another in Oslo, Norway (Bunker II), that's all I can tell for now.

10. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
10. The Same direction we currently have. I don't plan on changing our writing style. Our second opus to be yet released differs from the first one soundwise, but musically keeps the same essence, and we want to keep it that way.

11. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
11. Well, like I mentioned before one of my main inspirations is Darkthrone on their black metal era, but obviously I can't leave out early Mayhem, and Burzum which also inspired me. Nowadays personally I've been listening to a lot of 'War metal' how it's called, bands as Proclamation, Revenge, Teitanblood, Diocletian, Blasphemy of course, etc., obviously I don't leave on the side black metal which is the style I listen mostly, bands as S.V.E.S.T, Root, Master's Hammer, Mortuary Drape, Sarcofago, and the like.

12. How would you describe your views on Satanism and Occultism?
12. As you might know this topic about occultism is very deep and very personal, all I can say is that in Agrath we are all satanists in our own way, a true satanist does whatever necessary to make his life better and have total control of his life and what surrounds him, thus becoming stronger. Speaking for myself (Ignotus) I'm a practicioner of magick I've been walking on the left hand path for many years.

13. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
13. Outside music I have a normal life you can say, I'm married no kids though, and plan to keep it that way hah! I have a job, can't complain, although music specifically black metal makes part of my every day routine as I listen to it on a daily basis.

14.Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
14. I just want to thank you for the interview, and help spreading the Agrath disease to other masses. Cheers!
