Ulver/Liminal Animals/House Of Mythology/2024 Full Length Review

 

  Norway's  Ulver  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  going  for  an  experimental.  and  electronic  form  of  synth  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "Liminal  Animals"  which  will  be  released  on  November  29th  by  House  Of  Mythology.

  Electronic  music  sounds  and  programmed  beats  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  synths  a  few  seconds  later.  Vocals  are  done  in  more  of  a  clean  style  while  the  recording  also  gets  very  experimental  sounding  at  times  as  well  as  some  elements  of  ambient  also  being  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  tracks.

  Electric  guitars  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  album  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Real  drums  and  percussion  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  each  song  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  and  touches  of  trip  hop  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

   One  song  also  introduced  trumpets  onto  the  album  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  They  also  bring  in  a  couple  of  instrumentals  as  well  as  some  whispered  vocals  also  being  utilized  briefly,  spoken  word  parts  and  female  vocals  are  also  added  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  poetry,  sorrow,  humanity  and  historical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ulver  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  their  more  recent  experimental  material,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ghost  Entry"  Locusts"  and  "Helian".  8  out  of  10.

Sunn 0)))/Ulver/Terrestials/Southern Lord/2014 CD Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  joint  album  between  U.S.A's  Sunn 0))  and  Norway's  Ulver  who  teamed  up  together  to  create  an  experimental  sounding  album  with  the  recording  being  released  by  Southern  lord  in  2014  and  called  "Terrestials".

  The  album  starts  out  with  experimental  sounding  drones  and  noises  and  after  a  couple  of  minutes  elements  of  ambient  are  added  onto  the  recording  as  well  as  saxophones  which  leads  up  to  drums  5  minutes  later  as  well  as  a  more  doom  metal  orientated  sound  which  brings  in  the  introduction  of  bass  guitars.

  As  the  album  progresses  the  music  gets  a  lot  more  darker,  experimental  and  heavy  and  you  can  also  hear  synths  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  traces  of  psychedelia  and  after  awhile  a  brief  use  of  clean  and  acoustic  guitars  make  their  way  onto  the  album  and  on  the  last  song  there  is  a  brief  use  of  melodic  clean  singing  vocals  being  utilized.

  On  this  album  Sunn  0))  and  Ulver  team  up  to  create  a  more  experimental  drone  and  while  Ulver  started  out  as  black  metal  and  Sunn  0)))  experimented  with  it  in  the  past  there  are  no  traces  of  that  genre  on  this  recording  but  it  still  has  a  very  dark  and  ritualistic  sound  to it.

  Song  lyrics  are  mostly  absent  from  this  album  with  the  music  being  mostly  instrumental  but  the  short  amount  they  have  cover  poetic  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  professional  sound  with  all  3  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  joint  effort  between  Sunn  0))  and  Ulver  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental,  dark  ambient  and  drone,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Western  Horn".  8  out  of  10.

Ulver/Nattens Madrigal-Natte Hymne til Ulven i Manden/Century Black/1997 CD Review

  Ulver  are  a  band  from  Norway  that  has  experimented  with  many  different  styles  of  music  and  on this  recording  they  played  a  very  raw  and  primitive  form  of  Norwegian  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1997  album  "Nattens  Madrigal-Natte  Hymne  til Ulven  i  Mandan"  which  was  released  by  Century  Black.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  being  thrown  into  the  music,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars,  as  for  the  pianos  they  are  only  utilized  briefly  on  the  last  song  and  bring  a  depressive  feeling  to  the  music.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  Norwegian  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  raw  and  primitive  sounding  with  a  good  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  being  thrown  into  the  music,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  primitive  sounding  black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  classical  guitars  which  are  only  utilized  briefly  they  use  finger  picking  to  add  another  dimension  of  darkness  to  the  music.

  Vocals  are  all  grim  sounding  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams,  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in Norwegian  and  cover  Lycanthropy  and  Wolves,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and primitive  sound  to  it.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  a  great  album  from  Ulver  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  primitive  sounding  Norwegian  black  metal,  you  probably  already  own  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hymne  I"  "Hymne  VI"  and  "Hymne  VIII".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
