Alcest/Les Chants De L'Aurore/Nuclear Blast Records/2024 Full Length Review

 

  France's  Alcest  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  post  black  metal  and  shoegaze  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "Les  Chants  De  L'Aurore"  which  will  be  released  on  June  21st  by  Nuclear  Blast  Records.

  Atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times  while  also  adding  in  elements  of  shoegaze.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Vocals  are done  in  mostly  a  clear  style  mixed  in  with  a  small  amount  of  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  album  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

   A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style  and  one  track  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  spiritual  childhood  experiences.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Alcest  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Komerebi"  and  "L'Enfant  de  la  Lune".  8  out  of  10.

Alcest/Spiritual Instinct/Nuclear Blast Records/2019 CD Review

  France's  Alcest  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  their  mixture  of  post  black  metal  and  shoegaze  from  their  previous  release  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Spiritual  Instinct'  which  will  be  released  on  October  25th  by  Nuclear  Blast  Records.

  Powerful  sounding  bass  guitars  and  melodic   guitar  leads  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  riffing  a  few  seconds  later.  Elements  of  post  rock  and  shoegaze  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  some  clean  vocals  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  songs.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  The  riffs  also  utilize  a  lot  of  melody  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  as  well  as  some  synths  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  as  well  as  some  clean  playing  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  classical  guitars  can  also  be  heard,  female  vocals  are  also  added  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  French  and  English  and  cover  existential  anxiety  and  spirituality  themes.

   In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Alcest  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Protection"  and  "Spiritual  Instinct".  8  out  of  10.

Alcest/Kodama/Prophecy Productions/2016 CD Review

  Alcest are  a  band  from  France  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  post  black  metal  with  elements  of  shoegaze  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Kodama"  which  was  released  by  Prophecy  Productions.

 Clean  yet  distorted  playing  starts  off  the  album  and  evolves  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  direction  and  the  solos  and  leads  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  post  rock  elements  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  the  vocals  also  use  a  great  amount  of  clean  singing.

  Elements  of  shoegaze  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and  when  synths  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  atmospheric  style  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in length  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  both  clean  and  heavy  parts  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  after  awhile  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  are  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Alcest  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  post  black  metal  and  shoegaze  mixture  of  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  Nostalgia,  Beauty,  and  Spirituality  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Alcest  and  if  you  are  a fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Eclosion"  and  "Oiseux  De  Proie".  8  out  of  10.

Alcest/Le Secret/Prophecy Productions/2011 CD Review

  Alcest are a band from France that plays a very progressive form of shoegaze/post black metal and this is a review of their 2011 EP "Le Secret" which was originally recorded in 2005 but re-issued by Prophecy Productions with both the original and re-recorded versions.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with some blast beats being used at times, while the bass playing has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars and at times they have a very powerful sound to them, as for the synths when they are utilized they bring a very dark and atmospheric sound to the music.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast shoegaze/post black metal riffs that are a mixture of being both raw and primitive as well as melodic while the lead guitars are very primitive and melodic sounding black metal/shoegaze guitar solos and leads, as for the acoustic guitars when they are utilized they use finger picking and full chords to bring a very dark and progressive sound to the music.

Vocals are a mixture of clean singing and high pitched black metal screams with a brief use of whispered vocals, while the lyrics are written in French with themes that cover darkness and nature with one of the songs being a Charles Baudelaire poem being done to the music, as for the production it has a very dark, strong and powerful sound to it.

In my opinion Alcest are a very great sounding progressive post black metal/shoegaze band and if you are a fan of this style, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Le Secret(2011)" and "Elevation(2005)". RECOMMENDED BUY.
