Mizmor/Hell/Alluvion/Gilead Media/2025 Collaboration Album Review

 

  Oregon's  solo  projects  Mizmor  and  Hell  team  up  together  and  bring  out  a  mixture  of  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  collaboration  album  "Alluvion"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Gilead  Media.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into a   heavier  direction  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  elements  of  sludge  and  doom  metal.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  Growls  and  shouts  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  as  well  as  some  chanting  choirs  also  being  utilized  briefly.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  along  with  one  of  the  tracks  also  being  an  instrumental  and  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  psychic  distress.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  recording  from  Mizmor  and  Hell  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  collaboration.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Begging  To  Be  Lost"  and  "Pandemonium's  Throat".  8  out  of  10.

Mizmor/Prosaic/Profound Lore Records/2023 Full length Review

 

  Portland,  Oregon's  solo  project  Mizmore  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  black  and  doom  metal and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  album  "Prosaic"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  Profound  Lore  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  distorted  yet  melodic  style.

  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  some  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times  as  well  as  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  clean  playing  and  acoustic  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  the  tracks  and  one  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts.

  On  this  recording  Mizmore  moves  away  from  the  drone  elements  of  previous  releases  and  focuses  more  on  a  mixture  of  black  and  doom  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  existentialism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mizmor  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "No  Place  To  Arrive"  and  "Acceptance".  8  out  of  10.

Mizmor/Wit's End/Gilead Media/2022 EP Review

 

  Portland,  Oregon's  solo  project  Mizmor  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  black,  doom  metal  and  ambient  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2022  ep  "Wit's  End"  which  will  be  released  on  January  14th  by  Gilead  Media.

  Clean playing  starts  off  the  ep  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  before  going  into  a  heavier  doom  metal  direction.  Both  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  screams  that  also  add  in  elements  of  black  metal.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  riffs  also  have  their  dissonant  moments  along  with  the  guitar  leads  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized.  The  second  track  is  an  ambient  orientated  song  which  also  adds  in  some  choirs  and  clean  vocals  and  the  whole  ep  sticks  to  a  slower  direction.

  On  this  recording  Mizmor  takes  black,  doom  metal  and  ambient  style  soundscapes  to  create  a  very  heavy,  slow  yet  diverse  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  lost  faith,  the  disenchantment  of  modern  society  and  existential  dread. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mizmor  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  doom  metal  and  ambient,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Wit's  End".  8  out  of  10.

Mizmor/Andrew Black/Dialetheia/Gilead Media/2020 Collaboration Album Review

 

  Portland,  Oregon's  Mizmor  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  where  he  teams  up  with  Andrew  Black  and  together  they  create  a  mixture  of  dark  ambient,  drone,  black  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  collaboration  album  "Dialetheia"  which  will  be  released  on  November  20th  by  Gilead  Media.

 Atmospheric  sounding  drones  start  off  the  album  while  the  synths  also  bring  in  elements  of  dark  ambient,  Both  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  as  the  music  also getting  more  diverse  sounding  as  the  recording  progresses   as  well  as  some  acoustic  guitars  also  being  utilized  briefly.

  Field  recordings  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  both  of  the  songs  are  also  instrumentals  along  with  both  tracks  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other.  One  the  second  track  guitar  amp  sounds  and  distortion  can  also  be  heard  which  also  adds  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal  once  the  slow  riffing  makes  their  presence  known  as  well  as  the  dark  atmospheres  also  adding  in  some  touches  of  black  metal.

  On  this  recording  Mizmor  takes  his  mixture  of  drone,  black  and  doom  metal  and  mixes  it  with  Andrew  Black's  dark  ambient  style  to  create  something  very  original  as  well  as  keeping  most  of  the  music  instrumental  while  the production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collaboration  between  Mizmor  and  Andrew  Black  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dark  ambient,  drone,  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  the  album. RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Nostalgic  Dystopian".  8  out  of  10.

Mizmor/Cairn/Gilead Media/2019 Full Length Review

  Mizmor  is  a  solo  project  from  Portland,  Oregon  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  doom  metal,  and  drone  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2019  album "Cairn"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Gilead  Media.

  Classical  guitars  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  uses  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  All  of  the  musical instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  vocals  are  mostly grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  Dissonant  sounding  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  elements  of  doom  metal  also  being  added  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  atmospheric  style.  One  song  also  introduces  drones  onto  the  recording  as  well  as  some  growls  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  music  along  with  classical  guitars  also  making  a  brief  return,  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  inspired  by  the  writings  of  Albert  Camus.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Mizmor  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  doom  metal  and  drone,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Desert  of  Absurdity"  and  "Cairn  To Suicide".  8  out  of  10.

Mizmor/Untitled Winter/2013 EP Review

  Mizmor  are  a  1  man  band  from  Oregon  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  doom  and  drone  and  this  is  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2013  ep  "Untitled  Winter".

  "V"  starts  off  with  some  clean  but  still  dark  acoustic  guitar  playing  which  utilizes  both  finger  picking  and  full  chords  and  after  awhile  drum  beats  make  their  way  into  the  music  as  the  song  moves  on  guitar  distortion,  high  pitched  black  metal  vocals  and  heavy  doom  metal  guitar  riffs  make  their  presence  known  along  with  some  melody  getting  added  into  the  guitar  riffing  shortly  after  that,  around  the  6  minute  mark  deep  blackened  death  metal  growls  are  introduced  to  the  song  which  leads  to  the  music  heading  more  of  a  drone  direction  for  a  couple  of  minutes  and  then  some  clean  guitar  parts  creep  their  way  in  staying  in  that  direction  for  a  minute before  the  song  returns  to  the  heavier  parts  along  with  some  grim  sounding  screams  while  also  mixing  in  drone  with  doom  metal  which  lead  to  the  return  of  the  acoustic  guitars  which  also  close  the  song.

  "VI"  starts  off  with  drone  sounds  which  sets  up  the  mood  for  the  acoustic  guitars  along  with  some  bass  guitar  parts,  after  awhile  the  drum  blast  beats,  fast,  primitive  black  metal  guitar  riffing  and  high  pitched  screams  make  their  presence  known  before  slowing  down  and  going  into  a  blackened  doom  direction  along  with  some  heavy  bass  riffing,  around  the  7  minute  mark  distorted  drone  elements  start  making  their   way  into  the  song  as  well  as  the  return  of  the  acoustic  guitars  before  returning  to  the  slow  and  heavier  parts  as  well  as  the  screams  and  the  song  closes  with  distorted  guitar  amp  sounds.

  Lyrics  cover  dark  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  heavy  and  primitive  sound  while  you  can  still  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  ep  with  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Mizmor are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  black  metal,  drone  and  doom  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of t his  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "IV">  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
