Old Castles/Winterstorm/Everlasting Black Arts In Supreme Darkness/Inferna Profundus Records/2023 Split Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Chile's  Old  Castles  and  Ecuador's  Winterstorm  called  "Everlasting  Arts  In  Supreme  Darkness"  which  will  be  released  in  march  by  Inferna  Profundus  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Old  Castles  a  duo  that  returns  with  their  raw  and  lo-fi  style  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  more  a  dungeon  synth  before  instrumental  before  going  into  a  very  fast,  raw  and  lo-fi  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Throughout  their  side  of  the  recording  you  can  also h ear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  old  school  influences  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  at  times,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  instrumentals.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  qlipthoth,  mysticism,  paganism,  death  and  misanthropy  themes.

  Next  up  is  up  is  Winterstorm  who  return  with  their  raw  and  old  school  style  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  dark  and  melodic  guitar  riffing  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.  The  songs  also  mix  in  a  good  amount  of  old  school  influences  along  with  some  synths  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  fast  riffing  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  a  couple  of  the  tracks  being  instrumentals  and  clear  vocals  are  also  added  on  the  closing  song.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  paganism,  mysticism,  death  and  misanthropy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Winterstorm  and  if  you  are  a f an  of  raw  and  old  school  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Veil  of  The  Abyss".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  raw  and  old  school  black  metal.

Old Castles/Sarcophagical Lament Of The Past/Inferna Profundus Records/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Old  Castles  are  a  solo  project  from  Chile  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  raw,  lo-fi  and  depressive  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  album  "Sarcophagical  Lament  Of  the  Past"  which  will  be  released  in  2022  by  Inferna  Profundus  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  The  songs  also  capture  a  very  lo-fi  atmosphere  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  angry  yet  depressive  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  vocals  also  have  their  grim  moments.  A  couple  of  the  tracks  also  introduces  clean  playing  onto  the  album  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  at  times  as  well  as  one  song  also  being  an  instrumental.

  On  this  recording  Old  Castles  goes  for  more  of  a  raw,  lo-fi  and  depressive  style  of  black  metal  as  well  as  moving  away  from  the  dungeon  synth  elements  of  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  vampirism,  occultism,  demonology,  sorcery,  the  qlipthoth,  darkness  and  death  themes.    

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Old  Castles  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw,  depressive,  lo-fi  vampyric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Megalithic  Altars  Of  Azazyel"  "Carved  in  Funerary  Bones"  and  "Crossing  The  Veil  Of  Gamaliel".  8  out  fo  10.

Old Castles/Die Wampyrika/Inferna Profundus Records/2021 CD Review

 

  Old  Castles  are  a  solo  project  from Chile  that  plays  a  mixture  of  raw  black  metal  and  dungeon  synth  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  album  "Die  Wampyrika"  which  will  be  released  in  2021  by  Inferna  Profundus  Records.

  An  almost  silent  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  more  lo-fi  dungeon  synth  direction  while  the  synths  also  use  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.  On  the  second  track  the  music  goes  into  a  heavier  direction  along  with  the  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  giving  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  A  lot  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  demo  style  while  the  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  are  kind  of  mixed  down  low  in  the  mix.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  tracks  also  capturing  a  very  ritualistic  atmosphere  as  well  as  half  of  the  tracks  also  being  dungeon  synth  instrumentals. 

  Old  Castles  plays  2  different  musical  styles  on  this  recording  with  one  part  being  a  very  raw  and  ugly  form  of  black  metal  as  well  as  the  other  part  being  in  a  very  lo-fi  dungeon  synth  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  vampirism,  sorcery  and  medieval  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  Old  Castles  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  raw  black  metal  and  dungeon  synth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres, you  should  check  out  this  solo  project. RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Orgiastic  Feast  In  Excrement"  "Burial  Into  the  Mist"  and  "Funeral  Sorcery". 8 out  of 10.
