Necrohammer/Unholy Black Steel/WolfKult Religion/2025 Compilation Album Review

 

  Necrohammer  are  a band  from  Mexico  that  plays  an  old  school  mixture  of  black,  thrash  and  speed  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  compilation  album  "Unholy  Black  Steel"  which  was released  by  WolfKult  Religion  which  consists  of  their 2022  and  2024  demo's  "Unholy  Black  Steel"  and  "Ancient  Metal  Holocaust".

  A  very  dark  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  compilation  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  which  also  mixes  thrash  and  speed  metal  together.  Most  of  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  and  90's  era  along  with  the  vocals  mixing  both  the  first  and  second  wave  era's  of  black  metal  together  with  a  bestial  touch.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  remain  true  to  an  old  school  style  while  blast  beats  are  also  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs.  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  they  also  five  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  some  dark  sounding  melodies  also  being  utilized  at  times.

  Throughout  the  compilation  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all  of  the  music  sounding  like  it  could  of  easily  bene  recorded  and  released  more  then  30  years  ago,  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals  as  well  as  the  second  demo  also  adding  in  more  of  a  raw  and  fast  style  as  well  as  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  and  they  also  bring  in  a  Von  cover.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while t he  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Occultism,  Blasphemy  and  Metal  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Necrohammer  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  mixture  of  black,  thrash  and  speed  metal  and  if  you  are  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Satanic  Force"  "Hammer  Of  Black  Destruction"  "Tormentor"  and  "Satanic  Blood".  8  out  of  10.

Mutant Sex Demon Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the solo project?

A: Hail! I Am Mutant Sex Demon and basically this solo project is my tribute to everything that I like in the 70's / 80's underground culture.

2.You have a new album coming out in July, musically how does it differ from your previous release?

A.Yes! This album is called "Cutting Through" and its kind of continuance to my previous album. I have somewhat unique style and I like to keep it that way.

3.You also play in other bands and projects, what is it that you bring into the music of 'Mutant Sex Demon', that you have not been able to do with your other groups?

A: Mutant Sex Demon is kind of personification of my interest about 70's & 80's sleaze and horror movies, 80's metal, serial killers and other obscure stuff, lets call it dark side of human nature. 

This whole thing is kind of continuance to my previous project "Sperm Angel" which I started as a solo thing but it didn't last solo project very long and I'm happy about it but

this thing is kind of different. 

4.A lot of your lyrics cover satanic themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

A:I've been studying and approaching Satan from many angles. Only statement I can give is that: Madness can come without Satan, but Satan won't come without madness.

5.What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects you have explored so far with the music?

A:Easier to list things I write about, but I don't have strict boundaries. Here are some: Satanism, Murders, Sexuality and Suicide.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Mutant Sex Demon'?

A:I've thought about this a lot, because I chose this name back in 2016 or 2017 for SA.

My hard guess would be that Japanese splatter/gore movies inspired me a lot at that time, still does.

I've heard some fuckers complaining about the name, but I would choose it again. 

For those guys: Is this my band or yours? Shut the fuck up and get out of my way.

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

A: It is kinda tribute to one and only MENTORS, but also to GG Allin. In original version the two tombstones belong to GG Allin and El Duce. 

Woman in the picture is kind of (Un)virgin Mary and muse of these two gentlemens and is about to give birth to ultimate filth metal antichrist.

8.With this project you record most of the material by yourself but have worked with musicians in other bands and projects, do you prefer to work solo?

A:I've recorded everything by myself, except guitar solos which are made by longtime partner in crime: Hell Priest of Nocturnal Mass. 

There is good sides in both: Band and Solo but I didn't have anyone to play with at time, so I had to do solo "mission".

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and underground metal/

A:Mostly people have liked it, but it takes certain kind of humour and taste to get into it. There is lot of hidden stuff and "read between the lines" type of stuff here.

I guess those who likes obscure stuff, should check my stuff out. I don't make music for people, I just do stuff and then I release it. Reactions are not so important.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that you are part of?

A: For now, these things keeps me busy and give me headache sometimes. I don't do gigs nowadays, so I have time to make more albums.

I would recommend people to check out White Baroness and Sigon, if you are interested other work I do. Also there is new album coming out 

From MORGAL with their new lineup, definitely keep your eyes and ears on that!

11.Where do you see yourself heading into s a musician during the future?

A:I keep doing what I like to and when I like to. I don't think that I'm going to be "better" musician or shit like that.

I let professionals do their thing and I'm doing my own thing.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you currently listening to nowadays?

A: Oh boy, there are so many but maybe I list some that had big impact on me:

W.A.S.P, Motörhead, GBK, Mentors, GG Allin & Murder Junkies... list is endless really.

  A  very  apocalyptic  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  while  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  satanic  panic  era  samples  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  elements  of  80's  era  speed  metal  and  hardcore  punk.

  Funebre  Devastation  are  a  band  from  Spain  that  plays  an  old  school  mixture  of  war,  black,  death,  thrash  and  speed  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  ep  "Allegiance  In  Torment"  which  was  released  by  Morbid  Shrine  Productions.

  A  very  heavy  first  wave  style  starts  off  the  ep  while  the  vocals  bring  in  more  of  an  80's  death  metal  style.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  war  metal  elements,  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  hard  and  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  black  metal  screams  are  also  utilized  at  times.

  A  lot  of  the  riffing  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  thrash  and  speed  metal  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  remain  true  to  an  old  school  extreme  metal  style  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  

   Gregorian  chants  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  some  of  the  riffing  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  and  the  whole  ep  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction  along  with  some  of   the  vocals  also  capturing  the  classic  Hellhammer/Celtic  Frost  style.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  metal,  dark  and  apocalyptic  themes.

Helvetestromb/Apocalyptic Fires/Master Of Kaos Productions/2024 Full Length Review

 

  Helvetestromb  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  goes  for  a  mixture  of  black,  thrash  and  speed  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Apocalyptic  Fires"  which  was  released  in  2024  by  Master  Of  Kaos  Productions.

  Apocalyptic  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  direction  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Elements  of  thrash  metal  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  A  lit  of  the  music  also  mixes  the  first  and  second  wave  together  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also being  done  in  a  very  old  school  style.

   Influences  of  speed  metal  are  also  used  on  most  of  the  tracks  as  well  as  some  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times  along  with  one  song  also  introducing  spoken  words  onto  the  album,  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  clear  singing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Mayan  Culture,  Ritual  Sacrifice,  war-Torn  Landscapes  and  Metaphysical  Descent.   

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Helvetestromb  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  thrash  and  speed  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Pools  Of  Prophecy"  "Total  Necroarmageddon"  Nekrotik  Mass"  and  "Chapel  of  Stilled  Voices".  8  out  of  10.

  Veenlijk  are  a  band  from  the  Netherlands  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  with  elements  of  thrash,  speed  metal,  post  hardcore  and  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  "Galgenberg"  which  will  be  released  on  January  23rd  by  Void  Wanderer  Productions.

  Nature  sounds  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  direction  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  some  of  mid  tempo  sections  add  in  touches  of  post  hardcore  and  punk.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.

  Elements  of  thrash  and  speed  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilzied  they  also  bring  in  more  of  an  old  school  metal/punk  style  and  a  couple  of  the  songs  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Dutch  and  cover  folk  tales  from  their  home  country.

  In  my  opinion  Vennlijk  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal  band  with  elements  of  thrash,  speed  metal,  punk  and  post  hardcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Egidiuslied"  and  "Bloedbad".  8  out  of  10.

  Portugal's  Filli  Nigrantium  Infernalium  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  black,  thrash,  speed  and  heavy  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "Pérfida  Contracção  do  Aço"  which  will  be  released  on  November  29th  by  Osmose  Productions.

  Angry  sounding  black  emtal  screams  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  melodies  are  also added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  thrash  and  speed  metal  elements.  When  the  music  slows  down  it  also  adds  in  a  touch  of  doom  metal  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  A  lot  of  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  old  school  tradition  as  well  as  remaining  very  modern  at  the  same  time  as  well  as  some  of  the  riffing  and  solos  also  adding  in  influences  of  traditional  metal,  some  of  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  semi  melodic  touch  and  one  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  folk  instruments,  choirs  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Portuguese  and  cover  Occultism,  Satanism  and  Anti  Christianity  themes.

  Finland's  Chephreon  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  black,  thrash  and  speed  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2024  album  "Dark  Tales  From  The  Deep  Lakes".

  A  very  heavy  thrash  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  songs  also  mix  in  elements  of  80's  era  speed  metal.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  classical  guitars,

  Blenchatra  are  a  solo  project  from  the  united  Kingdom  that  plays  an  atmospheric  mixture  of  pagan  black  and  speed  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  album  II:  On  These  Shores  Where  Nothing  Stands"  which  will b e  released  on  September  29th  by  Naturmacht  Productions.

  Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  playing  a  few  seconds  later  while the  synths  also  give  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim y et  high  pitched  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  elements  of  speed  metal  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  riffing.

   Death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  melody.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  spoken  word  parts  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  one  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  clear  vocals.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  ancient  rituals,  beliefs  and  myths  of  the  ancient  Celtic  people  of  England. 

  In  my  opinion  Blenchatra  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  mixture  of  pagan  black  and  speed  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Forest  Samhain"  "Circle  of  Stones"  and  "Cernunnos".  8/6  out  of  10.

  Death  Dies  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  an  old  school  form  of  occult  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Stregonerta"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Time  To  Kill  Records.

  A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.  When  the  music  speeds  ups  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  yet   high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

Sophist/Avenger...Liberator/2023 EP Review

 

  Edmonton.  Alberta,  Canada's  Sophist  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  black,  death  metal  and  grindcore  with  some  elements  of  thrash,  speed  metal,  industrial  and  electronic  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  ep  "Avenger...Liberator"  which  will  be  released  in  April.

  A  very  fast  and r aw  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats.  The  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in the  brutality  of  grindcore  while t he  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  short  in  length  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Industrial  and  electronic  music  sounds  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized  and  some  of  the  riffing  also  brings  in  elements  of  thrash  and  speed  metal,  synths  can  also  be  heard  briefly. 

  On  this  recording  Sophist  mix  influences  of  death,  thrash,  speed  metal,  industrial  and  electronic  music  into  their  mixture  of  black  metal  and  grindcore  to  create  something  different  from  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  working  class  politics.

Unpure/Prophecies Ablaze/Invictus Productions/The Ajna Offensive/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Unpure  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  a  history  that  goes  back  to  the early  90's  and  plays  an  old  school  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Prophecies  Ablaze"  which  will  be  released  on  March  31st  as  a  joint  effort  between  Invictus  Productions  and  The  Ajna  Offensive.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Melodies  are  also  added into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  elements  of  death,  speed  and  thrash  metal.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  are  also  done  in  more  of  an  old  school  style  along  with  a  couple  of  songs  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  On  this  recording  Unpure  goes  back  to  early  90's  era  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  as  well as  adding  in  touches  of  80's  era  speed  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Darkness,  Death  and  War  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Unpure  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  mixture  of  black,  death,  thrash  and  speed  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Megalithic  Gateways"  "The  Witch  of  Upsala"  and  "Endtime  Dictator".  8  out  of  10.

Xexyz/Gamera/Super Sargasso/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Xexyz  are  a  duo  from  Chicago,  Illinois  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  raw  and  symphonic  mixture  of  black,  speed  metal  and  chiptune  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2022  album  "Gamera"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  Super  Sargasso.

  Melodic  guitar  solos  and  leads  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later.  The  Nintendo  music  samples  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  symphonic  feeling  when  they  are  introduced onto  the  album  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  speed  metal  elements.

  When  clear  vocals  are  utilized  they  also  ad d in  more  of  a  traditional  metal  style  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  all  of  the  drum  beats  also  being  programmed,  guitar  synths  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  growls  can  also  be  heard  in  certain sections  of  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  based  upon  the  Gamera  films  with  some  satanic  references..

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Xexyz  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  symphonic  black,  speed  emtal  and  chiptune  music,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "King  Gamera"  "Worship  Him"  "UFO"  and  "Satan  Apollo".  8  out  of  10.

  Sunshine  &  Lollipops  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  a  progressive  mixture  of  black,  thrash,  speed  metal  and  crust  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "The  *  Circuits  Of  Unconsciousness"  which  will be  released  on  November  2th  by  bleeding  heart  Nihilist  Productions.

  A  very  fast, r aw  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Synths  can  also b e  heard  at  times  while  the  solos  and  leads  also  add  in  some  melody  while  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  elements  of  thrash  and  speed  metal.

  Vocals  are  done  in  more  of  a  first  wave  black  metal  style  with  some  touches  of  the  German  thrash  metal  style.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  at  times  the  music  also  adds  in  touches  of  crust  punk.

  On  some  of  the  tracks  the  music  also  goes  into  more  of  a  progressive  direction  along  with  some  back  up  shouts  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  one  one  also  introducing  acoustic  guitars  onto  the  album,  a  couple  of  the  songs  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly,  one  track  is  also  an  instrumental  and  introduces  keyboards  into  the  music.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  inspired  by  the  writings  of  Schopenhauer,  Kerouac,  Alejandro  Jodorowsky  and  cover  nihilism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Sunshine  &  Lollipops  are  a  very  great  sounding  progressive  mixture  of  black,  thrash,  speed  metal  and  crust  punk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Seal  of  Disapproval"  "Possessed  by  Life"  and  "Of  Vanishing  &  Vanity".  8  out  of  10.

  Wolfcross  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  an  old  school  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "From  The  North"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Grind  To  Death  Records.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast   beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a r aw  feeling.

  Most  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  classic  Swedish  style  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  vocals  also  going  into  more  of  a  deep  yet  grim  direction  at  times.

DeathSlaughter Interview

 

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the musical project since the recording and release of the new album?  

 

-Passing Through the Valley of the Sodomites will be released soon on CD and Tape format with exclusive artworks. The album was recorded in August to October 2019 by Daniel Death (Ex –Power from/Nebular Dimension) on his own Studio (Túnel Records).  

 

2.Recently you have released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?  

 

-This album is more focused in Greek Black Metal scene (Theme and Mix), but it still carries that D-beat, Speed Metal influence in the riffs and passages.  

 

3.a lot of your lyrics cover occult and mysticism themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?  

 

-Most of the mysticism lyrics talk about paganism and philosophy through the concept of christian mythology and the abraamic morals towards the principles of modernity, but with an eye in the past.  

 

4.The project has also went through a few name changes over the years, what was the cause of the name changes and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'DeathSlaughter"  

 

-The previous name “Deathcharge” wasn’t mine and also have another band with the name, so I changed to DeathSlaüghter because the easily assimilation and the ambiguity of the two names (Death/Slaughter) and/or (Death’s laughter), since both can fit.  

 

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?  

 

-The main inspiration was Gustav Doré drawings from the seventh circle of Dante Allighieri’s hell. But with a colored approached by Thiago Böller (Fug Design) who did a masterpiece in recreate with hot colours and the dry feeling of hopelessness .  

 

6.On the albums you record most of the material by yourself but also have experience working with other musicians, do you prefer to work solo?  

 

- I always like to work in groups. All my albums had guest musicians, but since I’m the main composer, they usually just follow my strict rules of creation and adapt whenever it’s possible.  

 

7.What are some of the best shows that the live line up has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?  

 

- I only played two live concerts in 2017, for now I’m looking for a drummer, but it’s hard to find in my city (São José dos Campos). Most of them prefer to stay in a band with childhood friends and have no ambitious to get their albums released by foreigner labels, just some local bandcamp/full digital band type that only thinks to play nearby their comfort zone  

 

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?  

 

- Yes, but unfortunately, like the previous question, it’s hard to find a proper drummer who take the project as its own, I don’t mind share credits, but I need someone with full commitment to the band, that doesn’t wants to exit for futile reasons (like cover bands/ it’s kind of a plague here).  

 

9.You also worked with a couple of new labels on the new release, can you tell us a little bit more about the labels that are releasing the physical versions of the album?  

- Cianeto Label is a great friend of mine since the very first DeathSlaüghter EP Ressurreição. Gil Dessoy carries a great name in Brazilian underground scene with quality releases and distribution. Timeworn Record is from Josh Staples (Abaroth/Ancient Torment/Ex-Abnormality) and released some good band like Outre-Tombe (CAN) and Seax (USA).  

 

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?  

 

- Most of them accept as a unique band that mixes different Black metal scenes worldwide, but between classical “Trend” headbangers, they don’t understand the purpose of the band or what I’m musically doing, despite the fact that most of them listen the exact same bands as i do, they just like a really easy to digest formula for their ears, that’s why DeathSlaüghter is incomprehensible for most of them.

11.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?  

 

- I see myself focusing in my other band: Crimson Tower (Epic Heavy/Doom) and creating new bands. I don’t have any new perspectives for DeathSlaüghter for the moment, let’s wait a couple years.  

 

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?  

 

- I’m a huge fan of Italian and Czech Black metal scene and together with Brazilian 80’s deathcore  

and old school are the most influential styles for DeathSlaüghter, but at the moment, I’m listening 70’s prog rock to create new ideas for Crimson Tower

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  vocals  being  done  in  more  of  a  first  wave  black  metal  direction.

  Elements  of  doom  metal  are  also  added  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  while  dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  Keyboards  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  albums  while  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  influences  of  thrash  and  speed  emtal.
