Lutece Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Denosdrakkh : Well, we just released our new third album, “From Glory Towards Void” and we are now back after a 7 months break. Our former guitarist and bassist left the band so we ve been working really hard our setlist with the 2 new members of the Horde !

We’ll be hitting the stage with this line up in a few weeks now..Really looking forward to it as the new album is made to crush some skulls live.

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

For us, this new record is the flattening of nearly ten years of musical existence. It’s a complex mix of various kind of black metal and death metal. You can also hear some really cool thrashy riffs and heathen vibes too. It’ s without a doubt the most extreme and mature release we have never recorded before.

3.The band has been around since 2006 but has only released 3 full lengths and an ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the gap in between releases?

1 demo, 1 EP and 3 full lengths. I wouldn’t say there is a big gap between each production but you have to be aware that I and Hesgaroth used to live thousands miles from each others. He stayed like 4 years in China and I lived in Ireland for more than 2 years. Therefore, recording stuff together wasn’t really easy at that time.

4.Your lyrics cover the paganism of your home country, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic?

Hesgaroth has always been fond of History and his passion covers various era. When we started Lutece years ago, we were absolutely fond of celtic mythology and history. As Parisians, Lutece was an obvious name for our pagan black metal project. But years passing by, we just turned away from this scene, which, in our opinion, became more and more cheesy and boring. But we kept the name Lutece because we come from here and it sounds perfectly coherent with our music: a mix of old school and really modern metal. Just listen to the track “What Lies Beyond” to really understand the actual spirit of the band.

5.Originally the band was a studio project, what was the decision behind turning the group into a live band?

This decision came naturally 5 years after the beginning of Lutece. As said before, we used to live abroad when we started the band. Turning into a live band would have been way too difficult at that time. I really glad to be back in France for that reason honestly.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

The best show we played was the Motocultor Fest in August 2013. We played outdoor, in front of thousand people and I think we did a pretty good job. Our stage performance is something really intense, really brutal. We move a lot, unlike most of the black metal bands.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

No big plans at the moment as we really need to practice live with our new line-up but I’m pretty confident that 2016 will be a year full of good surprises for Lutece. The main objective is to play more often out of France and spread our music to new metalheads !

So far, we’ll be on stage for several gigs until May 2016 and got some contacts for a few fests by the end of the year.

8.Currently the band is unsigned, are you open to working with another label again in the future?

Well, this is not exactly true as we signed an awesome distribution contract with Dooweet Agency. Today you can find our new album in the whole world, which is absolutely new for us. We could have signed with loads of underground labels but we wanted something really powerful this time. This is not achievable for small labels.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your newer music by fans of black and pagan metal?

Feedbacks have always been really positive so far but we have to admit it : most of our communication is in French, we toured a lot in France and therefore most of the guys who really know us are French too. This is something that will change in 2016.

10.Are any of the band members also involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?

These days, our drummer plays in a French death metal band called Chabtan and our guitarist and bassist play in their own project too, Krematoria.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during  the future?

At that time, I can’t really say. But I think we’ll be back with some even more old school and raw black metal mixed with modern brutality.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what  are you listening to nowadays?

I’d say that a few albums from bands such as Negator, Dissection, Kataklysm, Belphegor, Tsjuder or Craft are among the classic bands that influenced us a lot these last few years. But as the songwriter of the band, I m really opened to many different styles. From progressive metal to electropunk, with bands such as Crystal Castles.

13.What are some of your non musical interests?

Whisky ! I am huge fan and Scotch collector. We also have some bikers in the band.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Well, thank you very much for this interview sir!

Lutece/From Glory Towards Void/2016 Full Length Review

Lutece  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  an  epic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their self  released  2016  album  "From  Glory Towards  Void".

A  very  dark  and  atmospheric  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with the  sounds  of  war  and  after  while  the  music  goes  into  more  of  heavy  and  melodic  direction  along  with  blast  beats  being  utilized  as  well  as  some  grim  black  metal  screams  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

Death  metal  influences  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and  as  the  album  progresses  synths  can  be  heard  in  the  music  at  times  and  some  tracks  also  bring in  a  melodic  and  raw  style  of  black  metal  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  all  of  the  songs  are  very  diverse  and  you can  also  hear  elements  of  war  and  thrash metal   and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  classical  guitars  on  a  couple  of  tracks  and  the  last  song  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Lutece  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  aggressive and  epic  while  also  being  very  melodic  and  heavily  influenced  by  death  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording while  the  lyrics  cover  European  Pride,  Pagan  Events,  and  Battlefields.

In  my  opinion  Lutece  are  a  very  great  sounding  epic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Venom  Within"  "Architects  Of  Pain"  "The  Last  Standing  Flag"  and  "What  Lies  Beyond".  8  out  of  10.
