A  very  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  adding  in  a  more  southern  rock  with  more  of  a  heavier  approach.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  some  spoken  words  also  being  utilized  briefly  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  more  of  a  classic  rock style.  Blast beats  and  tremolo  picking  are  also  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  drones  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

At  times  the  music  also  goes  into  more  of  an  experimental  direction  along  with  the  clean  sections  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  country,  samples  are  also  utilized  at  times  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  mythical  Florida  Man  who  turns  out  to  be  Poseidon

Olde Scratch Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Sure, while exploring a way to articulate a unique interpretation of the Black metal genre, I found myself drawn to the specter of the 1980s satanic panic. This fervent societal hysteria, particularly fixated on the alleged presence of subliminal messages back-masked onto vinyl records, inspired me to combine record scratching with the vehemence and dark undertones of Black metal.

2.So far you have released 2 albums, musically how do they both differ from each other?

The debut album drew inspiration from a medieval treatise cataloging the seven princes of Hell. Song titles and lyrics followed a rigid, structured framework, while the music pulsed with a hellish intensity, reflecting the esoteric themes rooted in the middle ages.

The vision for the second album embraces a more expansive exploration of the occult, delving into Mesopotamia and it’s influence across human history and culture. Musically, the second endeavor strives for a more refined approach, where the instrumentation converges in a more harmonious and ritualistic blend.

3.With your music you also avoid the traditional use of metal instruments, can you tell us a little bit more about this concept?

As a self-taught musician, I utilize software that converts my voice into editable MIDI notes. This technology enables me to orchestrate a vast array of virtual instruments, forming intricate sonic patterns.

Embracing the overarching meta concept of my project, I deliberately feature the art of record scratching, focusing on creating abrasive, rhythmic passages that emulate the tremolo-picked guitar riffs and blast beat drumming inherent to Black metal.

To further enrich the soundscape, a distorted guitar synth is incorporated as a melodic device driven by the thunderous cadence of deep, bellowing drums. Finally, drone intonations herald ominous tidings, enhancing the immersion and adding layers of depth to the overall auditory journey.

4.A lot of your lyrics cover Occultism and Left Hand Path themes, how would you describe your interest in the dark arts?

Though I personally identify as an atheist, I have long been fascinated by occultism and its myriad themes. The rich tapestry of symbols, rituals, and esoteric wisdom woven throughout history has always intrigued me. The ancient framework of occult philosophies and its influence on contemporary doctrines and spiritual exploration is undeniable and worth investigating.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Olde Scratch’?

Olde Scratch is a name historically synonymous with the devil. Rooted in British and early American folklore, "Scratch" was possibly derived from the Old Norse "skratte," meaning goblin or monster.

Beyond the obvious wordplay, choosing "Olde Scratch" subversively channels the spirit of the Satanic Panic era, a time when music was vilified for challenging societal norms and provoking moral outrage.

6.On both of the album covers you used artwork from Gustave Dore, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in his work?

Gustave Doré has always captivated me. His baroque, surreal depictions of the underworld resonate perfectly with the themes I aim to explore, adding a timeless, otherworldly essence to my creative journey.

7.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?

I’m open to working with other artists, whether on joint projects or splits. I have reached out to a few without success, so, we’ll see.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

I have been looking; however, several inquiries have yet to be addressed, and there has been no interest up to now, but  I remain hopeful.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

I have fans across North America and throughout Europe, including countries like Great Britain, Portugal, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Finland, Ukraine, Greece, Bulgaria, Denmark, and Serbia. My reach even extends to Brazil and all the way down under in Australia. I’m truly proud and grateful for this incredible worldwide support.

10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

I am eager to continue harnessing the art of record scratching in innovative and unconventional ways. My goal is to transcend its traditional boundaries to craft auditory experiences that are both captivating and inexplicable.

Simultaneously, I plan to delve deeper into the realms of the occult and esoteric beliefs. With This fusion of sound and mysticism, I seek to create immersive, transformative music resonating with symbolism and an otherworldly allure.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I deeply appreciate the experimentation of modern jazz, the powerful energy of old school metal, and the distinctive, atmospheric beats of downtempo. My interests also extend to the more intense realms of blackened industrial and the unrelenting force of bestial death metal, complemented by the avant-garde artistry of Björk.

Recently, I have been particularly inspired by the evocative sounds of the Black metal underground. Bands such as Black Curse, Onw and Spectral Wound have left a significant impression on me.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

My journey with Black metal has been a reflection on the interplay between chaos and structure, disrupting traditional genre confines and unsettling expectations. Blending raw intensity with the unexpected texture of vinyl scratching was not just a creative choice, but an exploration of how contrasting elements can coexist and enhance one another.

Von Jeglichem Wort Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the solo project?

„von jeglichem wort“ is a project that combines elements of black metal, dark ambient, drone and experimental music. Soundwalls, field recordings, heavy guitars and layers of sentimental yet eerie noises create the soundtrack of mankind’s demise.

2.Recently you have released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

The new album shows different aspects of vjw: atmospheric black metal riffs, noises and field recordings, ambient scapes, and forlorn melodic passages. It follows a path that is layed out for the project since the beginning – it concentrates these elements and ventures out into the abundance that bleakness has to offer.

3.Since 2020 you have released a great amount of material, do you spend most of your time writing and creating music?

Writing and recording music is a huge part of my artistic practise these days. I published a lot of digital EPs and albums – first and foremost to get the „wort“ out there, to introduce the music and the concept of vjw to audiences, to establish the idea of vjw. But also I see my band pages as a playground – developing new sounds, exploring the conceptual and musical backgrounds and elements. This album now on BHN Productions is an incarnation, a result of these processes.

4.What are some of the concepts that you have explored so far with the music?

The underlying concept of vjw is to give a sound to the dwelling and threatening developments, that surround me. It is not a political project – it is more of a research. It resonates as a very individual experience. VJWs music gives the upcoming escalations and their aftermaths a soundtrack. But its not only violent, there is a strong element of sentiment and hope in it as well. So much was possible, so much has been striven for, so much possibilities lie ahead, or do they?

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The artwork is based on a painting by Caravaggio. This painting gives that atmosphere that I mentioned above a picture. There are elements of violence, darkness, death, despair but also light, warmth, colour, hope, emancipation. With the digital albums the visual factor is not that big. It just provides an impulse to click on it. I see much more meaning in the visual aspect of the physical copies, the tapes and vinyl covers that VJW puts out. On physical copy, especially on vinyl – visual elements get the space they deserve.

6.With this project you record everything by yourself, do you have any experience working with other musicians in the past?

I have played in bands, and I am currently also involved in other experimental sound and text projects. The process of playing together with other artists (musicians, poets) differs a lot from the solo experience. vjw follows a clearly layed-out concept or vision. Playing together with other people is a more open, dialogish approach.

7.Have you done any live shows with this project or open to the idea?

I consider the vjw experience as an indiviual and intimate one. I dont think that a live experience can provide that quality. The doctor prescribes to play this music loud, via headphones – and best on vinyl!

8.The new album was released through 'Bleeding Heart Nihilist Productions, how did you get in contact with this  label?

I came across their work a few years ago, stumbling over some tapes at local record stores. I was intrigued right away by the design and care they put into their products, also by the attitude behind it. So I got curious and bought more and more of their vinyls and tapes. My on- and offline activities also raised eyebrows at BHN, so we started writing each other around 2021/22. We got to know each other’s approaches better and better. There was a mutual understanding about ideas of underground scene, the ridiculousness and beauty of Black Metal, the love for vinyl and tape formats etc. So one stormy night in Berlin in autumn 2023 we finally met, shared some wine, beer and cigarettes. The rest is not history but very much present!

9. On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal, ambient and drone?

Well of course there have been those that say „oh this is not proper black metal“. Duh! I think it is an interesting position to sit between chairs. And as much as I personally enjoy „proper Black Metal“ – I think there are a lot of bands out there that do it well. I dont want to create something that has been heard a million times. So vjw has resonated with people who also look to venture beyond genre cliches. I am very humbled by the positive feedback of these people, from virtually all continents. I see a huge quality in social media in that regard. Instead of edgelording, it can also be about discovering, sharing and appreciating. This is how I discover a ton of interesting projects, and this is how a lot of people have discovered vjw. On that regard: I wanna give a shout out to well curated YT channels like „Mao da Gloria“ or „Transmissions from the dark“ that shared some of my music, therefore helped spreading the „wort“.

10. Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

Well vjw has already new projects in the making, so it will definitely continue on its path. Since the world is more and more fucked up – there will be no shortage of inspiration.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I have been around Metal for quite some time, starting in the 80ies. My first impressive encounter with rather dark metal bands was definitely Celtic Frost. From there on I was constantly looking for more dark shit, like Samael, Sarcofago or later the second wave of Black Metal (Emperor, Darkthrone, Ulver – the classics). Since vjw is not „Proper Black Metal“ there are of course a lot of other influences to mention: projects like NADJA or older Anathema.

Nowadays I am listening again to a lot of newer Metal, black, experimental or atmospheric: Afsky, Sunken, Laster, Urfaust, The Ruins of Beverast – just to mention a few.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Well definitely a lot of thanks to all the people involved in vjw – listeners, supporters, followers, friends, my label, reviewers etc. Also thanks a lot for giving me the opportunity of this interview to shed some light on my music.

And yeah, stay edgy all you fabulous folks out there!

Mount Depression/The Art Of Seeing/2023 Full Length Review

Argentina's  Mount  Depression  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  depressive  black  metal,  noise,  drone  and  ambient  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2023  album  "The  Art  Of  Seeing".

Dark,  heavy  and  melodic  riffing  starts  off  the  album  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  lot  of  distorted  drones.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  some  depressive  black  metal  screams  also  being  utilized  briefly.

A  lot  of  the  music  also  sounds  improvised  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  elements  of  ambient  and  noise.  Percussion  and  keyboards  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  each  song  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  a  slower  direction.

On  this  recording  Mount  Depression  takes  depressive  black  metal,  drone,  ambient  and  drone  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  very  diverse  recording  as  well  as  sticking  to  mostly  an  instrumental  direction  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Mount  Depression  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal,  ambient,  drone  and  noise,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "About  The  Gunman  Philosophy"  and  "A  Knife  Glorification".  8  out  of  10.

Vid Liv Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Well, I guess no one have heard of us, but if feels nice to finally have something to present. A debut album, both metal and drone music, no genres and all genres.

Me and F started to play for old times sake two years ago and it has slowly developed to this. Im very humble about every one that has contributed to make this album. Great people that have interpreted the vision for the band and bringing something of their own to the project.

2.You have your first album coming out in october, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

Starting to play and writing together me and F just wanted to surprise ourself. When the material started to sounds a certain way, the next part would haft to be something different. No repeating, So the style, is many styles I guess. For ones I have been successful in feeling free when it comes to genres and expectations. Just mixing stuff and experimenting.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

A: The lyrical content is based on darkness in all its shapes and forms, and how it can make you feel. For some, darkness can bring fear and insecurity, and for some it can be more inviting. It can have a place in your heart and soul that makes you more or less want to discover everything about it, no matter what

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Vid Liv’?

In Swedish it means ”Alive”. A vibrating state to be in. Skirt. Makes you nervous just to think of.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

I think its black holes in a sea of void and nothingness. So its ”on brand”.

6.Has the band done any live shows or is this strictly a studio project?

Right now we don’t have any live plans, Its hard to get people to be in the same place and time. I don’t think F even knows that the record will be released this oktober.  But who knows? Make us an offer!

7.So far very little is known about the band, do you prefer to keep a lover profile?

In one way, yes. If no one asks you, keep quiet and make great art.

8.The new album is coming out on 'Breathe Plastic Records' how did you get in contact with this label?

I was reaching out to them after seeing there rooster and bad ass logo. I think their taste in music is great, and I think the album ”Woe to the Wicked” with Vulva is truly remarkable. Apparently they have a great taste ;)

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal, underground and experimental music genres?

Well since the album isn’t released yet, I have not got that much reactions. But I think that if you appreciate the experimental side of music but that stills sounds ”rehearsal room” this is something for you.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Thats a good question, there will be something else, but with the same roots. I still want to surprise myself so that will be the guidelines. Im fan of bringing in different musicians and styles. And being very openminded to art in any form.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I always come back to ”Ordo Ad Chao” with Mayhem. For me that album was a game changer, just bought in on vinyl, but got the CD for at least 15 years I think. So when its comes to metal it was the end and the beginning.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I hope people take the time to listen and trough this album from start to end. Its journey. In this time of jumping intros and tracks on Spotify. See how the music can change you. And buy the this very nice packaged cassette trough Breath Plastics, they have done a great job!

Necrovescent Ruiner Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

It's me in a tiny room in Portland Oregon with a bunch of music gear normally reserved for buttrock. I said to myself "buttrock no more" and became evil at that very instant. Horns began to grow out of my head and a long pointy tale bolted out of my sphincter like an eel emerging from under a reef in the Amazon. With my $200 Chinese Ibanez Iceman turned up to about 6 on the master knob, I blurted into the microphone my first word as my reborn self, that word being "krieg". The force caused by this unholy utterance combined with a low A power chord resulted in the formation of my new project, Necrovescent Ruiner.

2.You have an album coming out in March, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

There are so many cool looking records with sick art that sound like total dog dick, and that was sort of what I was going for. The last record I did, Box - Cherry Blossoms At Night, was an experiment in making things sound as good as possible with what gear I had and abilities I possessed, making a dozen different versions of several songs that I may have started recording over 10 years ago, just total whacko nutjob tryhard shit. Untouchable Faith Decay on the other hand, is drinking a 6 pack of beer and a couple shots of tequila at 3am and recording 25 minutes worth of drums with a scant musical backdrop and having that be the foundational entirety of an album, whether they're good or bad, then coming back the next day and listening to what I did, throwing guitar/bass/synths/vocals on top of it, trying to make it somewhat coherent in theme, and then spending another 4 days mixing it in a way that I shouldn't. There's very little situational awareness involved. It's like being a kid again and being stoked on farting into a microphone and showing it to your friends, getting high off of the idea that you've made something despite how pedestrian it is and how musically pedantic it isn't.

3.The lyrics on the new release are a concept album, can you tell us a little bit more about the story you covered with this release?

I was thinking about how close we are for implant technology to becoming a norm, a standard, like how we used to live our lives without cell phones without issue 20 years ago but now the thought of not having one is like being naked. There could be collectively a similar situation where implants are so much of a norm that it would be absolute insanity not to have them. How does cell phone usage affect our bodies and mind? We have some idea but the only way to know for sure is for enough time to pass, we might be walking around with fucking asbestos in our pockets and up to our ears and not know about it now. Before I say anything else, I don't know shit about what I'm about to say, I am not a science guy. But, imagine implant tech fusing with your DNA/RNA to a point where you're passing down implant tech via sexual intercourse into your partner and into your future children. Fast forward 2000 years or some shit. Then go watch Beastmaster or Thundarr the Barbarian but make it death/black metal in aesthetic and super uncomfortable and gross. That is the picture I'm trying to make with this record.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Necrovescent Ruiner'?

Evanescence is my favourite band of all time and I wanted to call the band Evanescence originally but they stole the band name idea so as a silent form of revenge I named it Necrovescence and then to Necrovescent so as not to appear as a copycat band since our music is very similar. Ruiner was added at the end to express something of necrovescence ruining something, like an orgasm when you're down in the morgue and the corpse keeps laughing at you and your piddly little necropeen.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

I had my pal Anton Issendorff in Vienna come up with a drawing of two necrobabes with 3 horns, 2 off of the sides of their heads and the one in the middle adjoining their heads forever, sort of a fucked up reminder that no matter where you go, there you are and there they are too, that they being you. Jiddu Krishnamurti went in great detail about how there are two "you's", the one that actively experiences and reacts to life, and the other that acts as a camera, watching replays of past moments in time and applying meaning, judgment, and purpose to them, which causes your active self to suffer through over-analyzation.

6.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?

No, but I'm totally open to it as long as my potential bandmates have never touched an instrument in their entire lives, something I've always wanted to do.

7.The album is going to be released on 'Miserable Pyre', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

It's a physical/digital outlet and umbrella for everything I'm involved with, solo and collaborative projects specifically. I have put out my three solo releases as box over the years on miserable pyre, a small batch of youtube covers under my holybookofwang handle, and am planning several EP releases with several collaborators as two-piece bands, and a soundtrack to a to-be-named IP when it's ready to go.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

I'm not sure, and in typical black metaldom I don't care too much, I listen to a lot of black metal but people that align their existences with sub-cultures tend to be dimwitted and have questionable moral compasses, like people that are adamantly against racist or nationalist bm (rightfully) but are totally ok and/or silent on bands with rapists and abusers. It's pretty fucked. At that point I think it's better to just not be outspoken about personal beliefs if you openly condemn one fucked thing but not another. Just go listen to your nerd shit on your headphones and be quiet.

9.Are any of the band members also involved with any other bands or musical projects?

I have worked with Seventh Rule/Profound Lore/Relapse band Atriarch since 2016 as bassist and will be engineering/mixing our next record this summer. Since 2018 I have been involved with Poison Idea as lead guitarist and have worked on a number of projects with Jerry A as a collaborator and engineer. Beyond those 2 things I am primarily focused on my label Miserable Pyre and all of the projects I'm recording for it, including box/icybox, my holybookofwang youtube channels, and my Fields of the Nephilim cover band with Soriah, Ashkelon Sain of Trance to the Sun, Atriarch bandmate Maxamillion Avila, and Devon Lopentrone of Ruby Lustre. I am also hoping to collaborate on a very fucking cool video game but I can't say anything about it yet.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Not entirely sure, I'm recording one right now that's dark ambience fused with prog thrash but it might go under a different name depending on how it turns out toward the end. Yes, dark ambience and prog thrash together in one sentence may sound like musical suicide to most people but I am committing musical suicide on the daily and somebody's gotta do it.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

The new Crawl and Blut Aus Nord records are bad af. I was listening to a lot of Harry Partch while making Untouchable Faith Decay. Watched a couple Tarkovsky movies. Revisited some Carpathian Forest, Velvet Cacoon, Judas Iscariot, and Captain Beyond. I listen to Seikima II almost every day to this day, they are the greatest band of all time. If I ever have to hear Ziggy Stardust ever again I am going to jump off of a cliff.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Buy my shit, metal kiddies!!!
