Cnoc An Tursa/A Cry For The Slain/Apocalyptic Witchcraft/2026 Full Length Review

 

  Scotland's  Cnoc  An  Tursa  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  folk  music  inspired  form  of  pagan  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "A  Cry  For  The  Slain"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Apocalyptic  Witchcraft.

  Nature  orientated  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  adding  in  some  clean  playing  and  female  vocals  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  keyboards  are  also  utilized  at  times  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can b e  heard  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  harsh  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  angry  shouts  while  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  folk  instruments  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars,  spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Scottish  History  and  Poetry.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cnoc  An  Tursa  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  folk  influenced  pagan  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Caoineag"  and  :Address  To  The  Devil".  8  out  of  10.

Cnoc An Tursa/The Forty Five/Apocalyptic Witchcraft Recordings/2017 CD Review

  Cnoc  An  Tursa  are  a  band  from  Scotland  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  pagan  form  of  black  metal  with  some  folk  music  elements  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  album  "The  Forty  Five"  which  will  be  released  in  2017  by  Apocalyptic  Witchcraft  Recordings.

  War  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with an  epic  atmosphere  as  will  as  adding  keyboards  onto  the  recording  and  after  the  intro  folk  instruments  and  acoustic  guitars  are  added  into  the  music  along  with  the  songs  also getting  more  heavy  and  atmospheric  and  most  of  the  tracks a re  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast beats  can  be  heard  while  some  songs  also  add  in  symphonic  and  epic  elements  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  deep  yet  grim  black  metal  screams  and  the  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  pagan  style  shouts.

  Clean  guitars  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  some  of  the  fast  riffs  bring  in  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  whispers  and  they  also  bring  in  a keyboard  instrumental  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction  on  the  remaining  tracks  and  melodic  vocals  are  also  used  briefly  and  later  songs  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars.

  Cnoc  An  Tursa  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  folk  influenced  melodic  and  epic  style  of  pagan/black  metal  from  their  previous  release,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Scottish  History  and  Poetry  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cnoc  An  Tursa  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  pagan/black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Yellow  Locks  Of Charlie"  "Sound  The  Pibroach"  and  "The  Last  Of  the  Stuarts".  8  out  of  10.

Cnoc An Tursa/The Giants Of Auld/Candlelight Records/2012 CD Review

  Cnoc  An  Tursa  are  a  band  from  Scotland  that  plays  a  very  melodic,  atmospheric,  raw  and  primitive  form  of  pagan/black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "The  Giants  Of  Auld"  which  will  be  released  by  Candlelight  Records.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  synths  bring  a  very  dark,  atmospheric  and  folk  music  sound  to  the  recording  with  some  flutes  being  utilized  on  the  last  song,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  pagan/black  metal  riffs  that  are  mostly  melodic  but  utilize  some  raw  and  primitive  elements  as  well  as  some  folk  music  sounding  melodies,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  pagan/black  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads.

  Vocals  are  all  high  pitched  black  metal  screams,  while  the  lyrics  cover  Scottish  Paganism  and  Folklore,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  heavy  and  powerful  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

  In  my  opinion  Cnoc  An  Tursa  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric,  melodic,  raw  and  primitive  sounding  pagan/black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Lion  Of  Scotland"  "Ettrick  Forest  In  November"  "In  Shadowland"  and  "Culloden  Moor".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
