Ofdrykkja/After The Storm/AOP Records/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Sweden's  Ofdrykkja  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  them  moving  away  from  the  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal  elements  of  previous  releases  and  goes  for  more  of a  mixture  of  post  rock,  neo-folk  and  dark  pop  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  202  album  "After  The  Storm"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  AOP  Records.

  Acoustic  guitars  start  off  the  album  and  also  bring  in elements  of  neo-folk  while  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  both  finger  picking  and  full chords.  Clear  male  and  female  vocals  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  the  electronic  sounds  updating  the  music  with  some  touches  of  post  rock.

  When  viola's  and  percussion  is  utilized  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  pre-Christian  era  Scandinavian  atmosphere.  All  of  the  tracks  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  along  with  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  shoegaze  style  electric  guitar  solos  and  leads  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also be  heard  on  a  couple  of  songs.

  When  whispers  are  added  on  one  of  the  tracks  they  also  bring  in  a  touch  of  black  metal  along  with  the  sham  drums  giving  the  music  more  of  a  pagan  and  ritualistic  touch  when  they  are  introduced  into  the  music  as  well  as  some  electric  guitar  riffing  also  being  utilized  briefly,  horns  and  harps  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  English  and  Swedish  and  cover  isolation  and  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ofdrykkja  and  while  some  black  metal  fans  will  not  like  the  new  direction,  I  can  see  this  album  appealing  to  fans  of  post  rock,  neo-folk  and  dark  pop.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Light"  "After  The  Storm"  and  "Beyond  The  Belt  Of  Orion".  8  out  of  10.

Ofdrykkja/Gryningsvisor/Art of Propaganda Records/2019 CD Review

  Ofdrykkja  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  had  an  album  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a mixture  of  atmospheric,  depressive  black  metal  and  melancholic  folk  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Gryningsvisor"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Art  Of  propaganda  Records.

  Acoustic  guitars  start  off  the  album  while  stringed  instruments  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  music.  Elements  of  folk  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  synths  also  mixing  the  synths  and  atmospheric  parts  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.

  Vocals  bring  in  a  mixture  of  grim  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  clean  singing  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  tracks  as  well  as  some  Celtic  lyre's  also  being  utilized  at  times,  one  track  also  introduces  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  recording.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  as  well  as  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  horns  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  sticking  to  a  very  slow  direction,  the  album  also  closes  with  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  Swedish  and  English  and  cover  isolation  and  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Ofdrykkja  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  depressive  black  metal  and  melancholic  folk  music,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Swan"  "wither" "Herr Mannelig"  and  "Grey".  8  out  of  10.

Ofdrykkja/A Life Worth Losing/Avantgarde Music/2014 CD Review

  Ofdrykkja  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  very  suicidal  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "A  Life  Worth  Losing"  which  was  released  by  Avantgarde  Music.

  A  very  dark  and  melodic  guitar  lead  starts  off  the  album  and  after  a  couple  of  minutes  you  can  hear  some  grim  vocals  being  utilized  in  the  background  and  after  the  first  track  guitar  riffs  start  making  their  way  into  the  music  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  which  are  used  on  a  regular  basis  throughout  the  recording  and  it  also  slowly  starts  to  build  up  to  be  of  a  black  metal  musical  direction.

  The  solos  and  leads  the  band  uses  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  sorrow  full  melodies  and  when  black  metal  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  they  bring  in  more  of  a  suicidal  and  depressive  sound  along  with  the  band  using  a  good  mixture  of  both  clean  and  heavy  parts  and  the  music  gets  more  atmospheric  as  the  album  progresses.

  When  female  vocals  are  brought  in  briefly  on  one  of  the  tracks  they  add  in  a  great  amount  of  originality  to  the  bands  depressive  black  metal  approach  and  after  awhile  the  music  starts  to  speed  up  a  bit  and  add  in  more  of  a  raw  sound  along  with  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  while  also  still  retaining  a  good  amount  of  the  depressive  elements  and  halfway  through the  recording an  instrumental  with  all  piano's  finds  its  way  into  the  mix  while  the  following  track  sees  the  band  bringing  in  acoustic  guitars  along  with  some  clean  singing  vocals   which  they  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  parts  on  the  following  tracks  as  well.

  Ofdrykkja  creates  a  very  original  style  of  depressive  suicidal  black  metal  adding  a  lot  of  newer  elements  to  this  genre  and  with  their  music  they  help  the  genre  growl  and  evolve  instead  of  copying  the  bands  that  came  before  them,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  Swedish  and  English  and  cover  dark,  depressive,  and  suicidal  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Ofdrykkja  are  a  very  great  and  original  sounding  depressive,  suicidal  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Livets  Dystra  Glang"  "Under My  Influence"  "Bury  Them  Under  Nails  And  Crust"  and  "Bitterljuv  Mostalgi".  8  out  of  10.
